America's Army: How To, Pick Up Games on GameSurge

By: Matt Wuthrich - Published April 30, 2007 at 6:24 PM EDT - Writer Archive
A PUG is a Pick-Up Game. Which is basically where a number of players from all different teams get together and play a game. It's basically like a scrim or match with the teams being made up of all different people, regardless of clan or team.

Have your own IRC client? #aapug @ irc.gamesurge.net

Why would this be cool? Well, just playing games on public servers can become boring, irritating, and frustrating. And you don't always have enough clanmates to scrim. PUGs were designed to fill that void. Get together with other great players, use voice communications just like a normal scrim, and go at it.

Why is it fun? Well you team up with other players that you can trust to be somewhat coordinated with, get some good challenging games going, and best of all it mixes competition and fun in such a way that it's extremely hard to get mad about losing. It's not your clan vs theirs, it's all mixed up. I've lost plenty of games PUGing and felt great about it. It's pure and simply, good fun for great players. And if you don't think you have what it takes, fear not, playing PUGs will only make you better, and pretty fast too.

How to start one is simple, type in .join in the channel and the bot will automatically sort you into teams once the limit (eight players) has been reached. You then join the vent and go into your teams channel.

A player with server admin can then setup his server to whatever map the players in IRC decide, and you get in the server and play with the CAL ruleset of 14 rounds, first to 8 wins. Hopefully now people will get the difference between a pug and a public server, no matter if it's locked down and only competitive players are on it. Here are a list of commands, which you can get at anytime by typing .help in the channel.

.vent allows you to view the #aapug communication information
.join allows you to join the #aapug current PUG List
.quit allows you to quit the #aapug current PUG List
.serv allows you to view the #aapug current PUG server
.list allows you to view the #aapug current PUG List
.last allows you to view the #aapug Last PUG Time
