America's Army: Tough Questions For the CPL's $10,000 BYOC

GotFrag's Mark "ubeen" Connor and Matt "madd" Wuthrich get a chance to ask CAL's Louis some of the harder questions when it comes to the CPL's upcoming $10,000 BYOC event for America's Army.
Thanks a lot Louis for taking the time out of your day to answer some questions. My first question is probably what most people are wondering, where is the money coming from and is it truly a cash prize?

Well, to answer the first part of your question, the money for this and all CPL tournaments are provided by the sponsors of the CPL, and the US Army is one of many event sponsors. For the second part of your question, the prize will be a cash prize and the disbursement will be as follows:

1st place team - $4,000
2nd place team - $3,000
3rd place team - $2,000
4th place team - $1,000

Many people have tried to petition the CPL to host BYOC before, what did you do differently?

When other attempts were made, they were done by people with weak roots in the America's Army community. If you look at the success of the multiple leagues for America's Army, the ones that last are being run by people with deep roots in the community. When I went to the CPL 2006 Winter & saw the BYOC tournament they had for Battlefield 2, I was convinced that I could make this work for America's Army. I went to the CPL Commissioner and asked him if it would be possible to run an AA BYOC tournament for CPL summer. I did not get a definitive answer from him until January. The rest of the work was trying to secure prizes for the tournament. The US Army has now signed on as a sponsor for the Summer 2007 CPL Championships and will have a full presence at the event to support this tournament.

Currently, the CPL BYOC for AA only has 7 teams signed up and only 4 out of the 7 have 4 players on the roster. The LAN is scheduled to start August 29th and that date is coming fast, how do you plan on filling up the venue?

Advertising and community awareness is the key here. I am trying to get the word out about this event to all of the teams in America's Army through the use of the CAL site, the CPL site, the America's Army and AAOTracker sites.

I haven't really seen too much advertisement going on, don't you think it would be time to step it up and target more popular sites such as AAOTracker, and the official site?

Now that everything has been confirmed, we really need the community to do their part. There is now an official tournament that could lead to more events in the future however we need to impress both the CPL and the Army to show them that we deserve more events in the future. With registration closing on August 10, we need teams to step up and register now.

As the teams stand, every team would walk away with money and that is somewhat scary, are there any plans to cancel or postpone it if you can't fill up the venue?

No. Let me be clear here though. This is America's Army's shot at a Bi-Annual event with the CPL. If the community wants to see these events in the future, then we are going to have to get some more teams.

How do you plan on supporting all of the severs, will we be seeing boosted servers like we have online?

We will have dedicated America's Army servers on site.

From what I can tell, CAL has had a lower number of sign ups this year in compared to last, with TWL hosting and 80 team open league, and the GGL laying claim to roughly 120 teams, why did you decide to host this tournament now when CAL is suffering the most?

Well, CAL always sees lower numbers during the summer months. A lot of teams are busy with summer jobs, or on vacations, and do not have time to play in all of the leagues currently available. Naturally they choose the leagues that offer cash prizes. I believe that the lower numbers we are seeing are a good sign. While we have not had a good showing from some of our invite and main players due to ACS not being released for AA in time for the season, I do believe that once this season is over, we will see plenty of teams returning.
