America's Army: CPL 2007 Summer Coverage

By: Matt Wuthrich - Published September 01, 2007 at 9:46 AM EDT - Writer Archive
Well as soon as it was announced it's here, the CPL 2007 BYOC for America's Army 2.8.1 is upon us with six teams competing for the $5,000 is prizes and cash.
The CPL has decided to hold a 6 round, robin tournament with the top 4 teams advancing to a 4 team double elimination tournament. The round robin schedule was published by Cory "Wolf" Agawa yesturday afternoon. Rumors are running wild that Revolution Gaming's leader c00l guY, has already issued a dispute against jCp in round one Friday afternoon. The eccentric voice of the community gone wrong has also brought a body guard to protect him during the event, and pictures are in high demand.

Out of the six teams to attend it seems only two, IceNine and Just Cause Project, are bringing their online starting rosters, everything else would be better classified as a pug. As we stated earlier, we will be posting a full event roster later in the day when we hear back from someone at the center, and a gallery will hopefully follow shortly.

The competition's poor attendance has already begun receiving flack from other gaming communities, claiming that America's Army doesn't deserve to have LANs or online competition such as CEVO or the AGC in the first place. It also seems in response the CPL cut the prize pot from the initial $10,000 to the current $5,000 total. The web2zone LAN tournaments in 2004 housed similarly low numbers, as well as the jCp BYOC last summer holding an eight team tournament. Either the Army will begin to step it up and support their game in the competitive LAN and event market, or seek to continue their dismal numbers and performance in the public gameplay scene / market.

Whatever happens, the event is sure to be a blast for those that attended, a beer pong tournament scheduled later with i9's Row and Banana claiming to be the best pair. Also attendees will get the chance to to see Banana Gun hack teams up on LAN, and finally, a possible fight is brewing between c00l guY, and a jelly donut that told him he cheated online. This event will go down in history as nothing short of amazing.

Be sure to keep checking GotFrag as we bring you the rosters later today, match and individual scores, and possibly some server side demos after the event.
