America's Army: CAL Week 7 Lookout

By: Dave Munro - Published January 22, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST - Writer Archive
As we head into the final two weeks of this CAL season we see some interesting match-ups on a rather interesting map. The Main Playoff spots look set unless something drastic happens, but the Invite division is a different story.
As the pace of America’s Army keeps getting faster and faster we see round times getting lower and lower and in turn we see less and less outdoor maps. This week teams face off against each other on the second outdoor map of the season, Mountain Ambush. One of the only maps that has a VIP and teams deem playable on a competitive level, we will see coordinated smokes and spam as the Escort team tries to either ‘escort’ the VIP to all three objectives in this mountainous terrain or eliminate the other team.

CAL-Invite - With only 2 weeks left we see a few teams that need to make up matches and some teams need to play a full match and get those rounds won as there are several close calls for 2nd place in both divisions.

Cover 3 vs. IceNine
These two teams haven’t exactly been active this season but this doesn’t mean that this can’t be a good match. Mountain Ambush isn’t a match that is played that much so the skill level on that map isn’t much different between teams. However, Cover 3 has picked up activity in the past week and with a win over Audigy on WCSE two weeks ago they seem to be getting back on track. Of course with the loss of their original leader Dillon due to inactivity they will not be as strong, but Becker seems to have taken charge.
My prediction: 9-5 Cover 3
Players to watch: bud, misery

No Said Date vs. Mediocrity
This is easily the match of the week as both teams need wins if they want to make the playoffs. No Said Date has an exceptionally strong outdoor roster with the likes of insane and Row, but both players haven’t been active in the America’s Army scene lately. However, Mediocrity seems to be on a roll and they haven’t lost a match since week 2 of CAL. Mediocrity isn’t the strongest outdoor team but they have their days. I personally can see this match going either way.
Here is my best unbiased prediction: No Said Date wins in OT.
Players to watch: hype, spanker

Ataxia vs. overRated
Ataxia has always been a top competitive team even though they put minimal practice time in, and overRated has been the team to beat these past few months. While overRated did have a bit of a slack off period a week or two ago, I think it was their wake up call and they are trying to get back on the playoff track and get as many rounds won as possible. With my personal prior experiences against overRated on long range / outdoor maps they don’t seem to be anything special but I think its safe to say they have this one in the bag. My prediction: 9-5 overRated
Players to watch: nexington, zoink

Dropouts vs. Redemption
Redemption has been hot all season putting minimal practice in all season and the Dropouts have about four America’s Army players left on their roster as the rest have moved onto Call of Duty 4. While Dropouts can put up a good fight against most of the teams I think Redemption will win by a large margin.
My prediction: 10-4 Redemption
Players to watch: word, big

Audigy vs. goingLive
This last match in the Invite division is shaping up to be a huge blowout. goingLive started off the season with a huge bang upsetting their first two opponents, but has since dug themselves into a deep hole. Struck by inactivity issues after cutting one of their more active players (decimated) due to his actions in a match, goingLive now has trouble fielding 4 for matches and they are facing one of their toughest opponents. Audigy’s tweaks prevail in a near blowout.
My prediction: 12-2 Audigy
Players to watch: Jonny, HaZe

CAL- Main - As stated before the Main playoff spots look pretty much set from here on out we just need to finish out the season. It looks as if it will be unRestricted, Unreasonable Ownage, Even Flow, and 2n Gaming in the Main playoffs unless something drastic happens.

epiC vs. unRestricted
unRestricted is also guaranteed a playoff spot and epiC is struggling to get more than one win. Also from personal experience playing against epiC they are a much better CQB team than outdoors. This is indeed shaping up to be a blowout or close to one.
My prediction: 11-3 unRestricted
Players to watch: agentryan, blood

Notorious Gaming vs. 2n Gaming
2n is also pretty much guaranteed a playoff spot and I predict a big win here. Notorious Gaming is a merger between iNvaders and SFTO and these guys are still working on their communication and teamwork. 2n has proven they can hang with the big dogs and is a favorite to win Main. Depending on how much nG preps this can either be a blowout or closer, but it wont be a nail biter.
My prediction: 9-5 2n Gaming
Players to watch: chronik, KrAn0w

Unknown Factor vs. Even Flow
Even Flow is pretty much guaranteed a playoff spot and all hope seems to be lost for Unknown Factor to even make the playoffs this season. This match could possibly be a blowout as Even Flow has a much stronger roster but one or two players on Unknown Factor’s roster could make the difference.
My prediction: 10-4 Even Flow
Players to watch: subtle, donmai

Fight Club vs. Unreasonable Ownage
Unreasonable Ownage is our 4th team that will most likely be in the playoffs. They face off against a once powerhouse team, Fight Club, which has now died down with only a few original and old members remaining. Still, this match has the potential to be close and a possible upset may come from Fight Club.
My prediction: 8-6 Unreasonable Ownage
Players to watch: alkali, laz

Volatilis Infensus vs. {SARs}
Last but not leas in the Main division we have the match-up between Volatilis Infensus and {SARs}. Both of these teams are doing exceptionally poor this season and are both facing activity issues. {SARs} is a pretty good outdoor team as they used to frequent bridge but they have forfeited their last two matches. If {SARs} shows up this match can be closer than people think, but vI will win by either forfeit or a decent margin.
My prediction: 9-5 vI or FFW
Players to watch: Mr.Clean, JonDHIV
