America's Army: CAL Euro Preview

By: Nick Barendregt - Published May 13, 2008 at 12:24 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Last week the 9th season of Cyber Amateur League started for Europe.
Epsilon.cloud wrote a nice little preview article for this season of CAL Europe. Read on...
Season 6 for the European CAL America's Army league is about to kick off. Divisions have been made and all teams are starting to scrim on what looks like the best maplist in the European scene so far.

CAL has had some ups and downs recently. Last season ended in a minor when both the Open finals and Invite finals we're decided by a dispute and a forfeit.

In Open, Knights lost to Bez Strachu but disputed for smurfing and won the dispute.

Extraordinary Gaming and Team Vertex prepared for their second Invite final but due to Team Vertex missing three rostered players for various reasons they forfeited and gave Extraordinary Gaming their second CAL-i title.

Only the Main final knew a happy but expected ending, SPQR easily won over ShowTime in their first CAL appearance.

After the season had ended FGL came in the picture and with CPL dieing CAL was considered dead by the bigger part of the scene. FGL did not hesitate and used Wednesday as their match day to make sure the Polish teams could play and CAL had to move their day to Thursday as FGL looked more promising than CAL.

However, teams still signed up as competition is always better than no competition and CAL hired new admins and worked on the maplist which ended up like this for all divisions:

MOUT (4), Urban (3), Border (5), Dusk (4), SF Village (6), SF Sandstorm (4), Mountain Ambush (6), Weapons Cache SE (6)

Over 60 teams signed up and were ready to placed into competition. How CAL-i and CAL-m were going to look like was a big subject to the scene but CAL sticked to their regular approach and respectively selected 8 and 16 teams for Invite and Main.

With a lot of teams disappearing and new teams with known players coming up the Invite and Main division look completely different this year.

CAL Invite

CAL Invites look promising this season. It looks like there's actually going to be 8 teams this time that will last to the end of the season. Only 4 teams will make it to the playoffs so lets see what teams are selected and what we can expect of them.

-se- Debil Gaming
Debil Gaming is a known team in the community and has won CAL-o before with a perfect record as Team Prima. This all Swedish team has two core players being scarz and kenji. They attracted some new players and took SHOGUN's initial place in Invites and will not be satisfied with anything less than a spot in playoffs.

-eu- Epsilon eSports
Recently winning the TWL EU Tourney and being in ESL-P semifinals Epsilon are probably the favorites for the title. Taking the best players out of Extraordinary Gaming, Team Vertex and [GR-OF] this allstar team has all the players it needs to win this season.

-de- High FiDelity AA
This team has been around for a long time now and deserve their CAL-i spot. They have lots of experience but haven't been able to win big matches. HFD have recently acquired top player Totte this should give them an advantage in the struggle for playoffs.

-eu- IceNine.eu
There's little that can't be said about this team. Making it to the TWL EU Tourney semifinals they were involved in a scandal around German player snooka and were removed from the tournament. Their roster suggests they have a lot of new players, but IceNine.eu has plenty of skill and experience and will be contending for a spot in playoffs.

-fr- Oh Bombed
Formerly known as GeT OuT this French top team has been competing with the big boys for a while now. A strong roster with oldschool players such as solaris give this team an advantage but Oh Bombed hasn't been able to impress in ESL-P only placing 4th in their group. If they take CAL serious as they've done in the past with TWL they might make it to playoffs.

-nl- Schuttersgilde
This Dutch team is based around a few befriended players and grew out to a competitive team. Losing most of their matches in Main last season I doubt if Schuttersgilde are ready for Invites. As long as their carrying player avalanche is in their starting lineup they might be able to win a few matches.

-pt- ShowTime
The new Portuguese number 1 team after Hyphen Concept disbanded. ShowTime has been showing some good results recently making it to both TWL EU Tourney and ESL-P semifinals but got knocked out by Epsilon eSports and SPQR no small names in the current competition. This will be their first Invite season and time will tell if ShowTime can handle the bigger teams.

-fi- The Urban Legends
Back from what seemed like a competitive break, this all Finnish team is renewed but seems to have a weaker roster than before. They used to star on longrange maps and have some Invite experience. The Urban Legends will be a challenge to any team but it is doubtful if they can keep up with the given maplist.

CAL Main

This division is mainly made up by new teams and even some new mixed teams that might look to form a definate team during the season. A total of sixteen teams have been placed, here are the four teams that you need to keep a close look on.

-fi- Bear Force CT Unit
This team made a pretty good performance in the TWL EU Tourney but couldn't make a stand against Epsilon eSports. A talented team with a few old FBL members make this a strong group and a force to be reckoned with.

-eu- Destiny
A somewhat mixed team combined out of old ziRkumflex members and a few other players with experience such as unLi, d1nosaur, Fido and Gonzo. If they prepare well and play their strongest lineup Destiny can definately put their mark on this division.

-eu- Phoenix Rising
James_Carter's new team. Recently formed picking up strong players from various teams. The lineup isn't complete yet but as it's looking right now Phoenix Rising could well be this seasons CAL Main winner if they manage to pick up 1 or 2 more skilled players.

-pt- Portuguese Warriors
This team has been active in the community for a very long time now having many players leaving for more skilled Portuguese teams. However, many of them have been coming back to the team they started out with. Players to watch are Ji, debian and shaca who all came from succesful teams such as The Edge and Hyphen.

CAL Open

The Open division doesn't really have teams that stand out this season. Normally there would be a few a new teams or mix teams but all of these have been placed in the Main division. Can't make any predictions here although there are a few stronger teams. Best is to sit back and see what happens in this seasons Open.
