America's Army: Player Profile: David "dtraf" Trafican

By: Tim - Published July 08, 2008 at 2:13 AM EDT - Writer Archive
I was able to take some time and talk to David "dTraf" Trafican. He's been a core player for many top teams, but has now found his groove with the team Just Cause Project.

Name: David Trafican
Alias: dTraf
Age: 20
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Team: just Cause project

Can we find out some background of you?

I grew up in Pittsburgh most of my life, moved around a bit but primarliy Pittsburgh. I graduated from a small town highschool and went to college on scholarship for football at Clarion University (it's a D2 school). I now am living down town Pittsburgh with two roommates of mine working at a restaurant called Smokey Bones. I'm currently a server/bartender and am in the process of becoming a manager for the restaurant chain. I am technically a sophmore in college with a major in Computer Information Sciences.

How did you come up with your alias?

My alias is simply my first and last name put together. D for David, Traf is short for Trafican. (amazingly few people figure that out)

Your past teams?

When I first started this game, I think it was version 1.5 and I was at my friends house, I saw a player by the name of Chaos_{Cosa_Nostra} Destroying kids in a pub. It was on bridge and I was in awe of his ability to 203. At that point in time I made it a point to get a computer and play this game and to join them. I joined Cosa Nostra at the age of 15, I was mature for my age so they over looked it and was later kicked out for speaking my mind about certain issues and venturing off of bridge. They didn't appreciate me trying to get other players to play other maps. I was kicked out and then joined another bridge team (whom were actually the arch rivals) KNIGHTS. I joined KNIGHTS because I was friends with them and they played maps like Tunnel, WC, and IC. I then stumbled into the competitive scene, inactivity amongst players and issues were brought about and some people left, I was one of those people and we formed a briefly existing clan by the name of Fallen Knights. My alias was [mYsTer!ouS.fk], the people I left with decided to head back to knights and I was going to do the same, except the pub life was no longer for me. I then went on tracker and looked at it to see who the "best" clan was. I saw Rising Storm up top and thought they were cool so my stalking began. I followed them in pubs, posted on their forums and began to try to hop on their vent and stuff like that. After a trial period I was denied because of my lack of experience in the competitive scene. A European player by the name of DirectC whom I was in KNIGHTS with left knights during the occasion I was speaking of and joined a famous European team by the name of area51. Don_Creep, RaKeZ, Desolation, DirectC, Chunky, many many great players played for this team and they came to me asking me if I could recruit and start an American team. With their help in strats and my recruiting we actually did fairly well. We lost to I think FC on UA in the intermediate finals. One American and three Europeans. It. Ccor, Street sweeper, reno, myself and ian were the main crew in our team, but we joined with a team called 705th to do 6v6 intermediate's. Don Creep, the leader of the A51 team retired after maddog the long time TWL Admin banned him for trying to fix a problem and make sure he was within the rules. Don creep was banned for no reason and it squashed him and removed him from the AA scene. He's probably the player I respect most in the entire game. Going from 705th to 7o5 to ENE I learned loads. We were a team not with all star players. But players that understood a concept of relying on each other and we had trust. We knew the concepts of the strats and believed in them, I remember putting in 30 hours of prep to take on iog on river basin. If I'm not mistake we won or at least tied. Now I play for jCp. By far the most skilled team I've played for. The most knowledgeable team I've had the privilege to be apart of. Best team work was with 7o5, most fun with 7o5 ( I still miss my buddy trix) most victories jCp, most let downs 7o5.

Being on an upper tier invite team, you have played countless matches against all skill levels of players. Could you pick one or two matches that have really meant something to you?

I remember one match I had with area51 was against Logic, it was only a pre-season map but we played them on hospital and we actually won. I was proud of myself, I think I remember wrecking dansik with the RPK, I thought to myself, these guys really aren't that good. I was intimidated by the name and their reputation, thinking i'd go negative in kills but I played well and that gave me confidence to be good. I remember another match while I was in area51 we lost 8-5 to Logic on IC. We restarted the round the server ampdied it was 3-2, we got the kill making it 3v1 and they took bpc while we were lookin around for him. That was a heart breaker because we had momentum. Another match I remember was with 7o5 when we played Rising Storm on MA and won. Last but not least, my favorite match ever was the match against overRated when we dominated them 7-1 while I was jCp. It was satisfying to say the least.

Who are your top three teams and players?

If I had to say a top three teams I would say Mug n Mouse, Rising Storm, IceNine.

If I had to pick a top three players I would say Chris is my first pick. Regardless of his baiting of his teammates, he has the ability to pull of disgusting shots and has a great ability to clutch. I think he's the best player as well because he doesn't have the best supporting cast. It's difficult to play at a high level when you have people dying around you. The second best player I would say is RaF. RaF is a superb player, the only thing that holds James back is his lack of faith in himself. He let's people tell him how to play instead of him playing how James can play. The third best I feel is Banana Gun, I say this because it's evident when this kid gets in a groove you better just get off client and go to sleep. Because you'll be wasting your time clicking through your friendlies watching them get raped by Kevin. A few honorable mentions I feel is first is sTan, sTan is a great player but I feel he gets enough recognition anyways, sTan's aggressiveness is his what makes him great, but it also can hurt as well, but he's the only kid that can run around by himself and wreck an entire team without ever reporting in. Jonny I feel is a great player as well. Jonny is a player I feel is good on his own, not in a team settings, but on his own. I've never had the privilege to play on his team but like I said, Jonny is a great individual player, but not sure teamwork wise if he's at his potential. One player I feel is incredibly overRated is epic, all I'll say is choke on client, rape without it.

What do you really want to see done with AA 3.0. If you had to pick one or two things to be changed, what are they? Why?

If I could change anything about AA it would be to speed up the game, it's realism is lovely, however it's also it's downfall. The learning curve is so high that it hurts. Different type of gaming styles would be great too (take COD4 into thought and use that to spring idea's) if you want to be chill you can play search and destroy (basically AA) if you wanna just rip faces go play a Death match or free for all.

It's no secret that the competition scene has been dying in AA. All that we see now are players recycling teams under a new name only to fall out again after one season. Any comments on this??

Again it's the learning curve, teams that are new, players that are new to the game I insist you come to the jCp vent and forums and ask us we'll help you and guide you in the proper way. We'll tell you what works and what doesn't. The top tier teams need to spread the knowledge of AA. (my xfire is dtraf79 add me lol, or go to www.gojcp.com) Another great way to learn will be the up coming lan in chicago which is still taking registration!

Who do you believe will win the Chicago LAN?

My prediction at the lan will be Rising Storm taking the prize, I think they are a team that has yet to reach their potential and are going to make a strong showing at the lan.

Any shoutouts for anyone??

Shout out to Trix and my old school area51 players (love you freakstar, airnoob, and all you mates) my jCp mates, and old knights clanmates. Love my ENE blokes too (dez, and yes general too lol) I would like to end my interview by saying thanks to those who put time into this game and adding to it to making it better. Officials, devs, forum moderators, and the list could go on for ages. They all do a lot of hard work for little to no thanks.
