America's Army: A Chat With FGL-AA|legit

FuturTech Gaming League's first season of America's Army starts soon, and GotFrag gets an exclusive interview with the FGL's AA.NA Director to get the nitty gritty about the upcoming season, a future US LAN, and how the league plans to adjust to 3.0.

Founded by European-based company Cyberiberia, FuturTech Gaming League is getting ready for their inaugural season of America's Army. With several LANs under their belt, the company decided to create the FGL. When word was spread about the upcoming league on GotFrag's forums; aadrama; and Xfire conversations amongst players; IceNine Gaming's Elijah "legit" R. pushed and helped create the support he needed to bring America's Army to the FGL and also helped land him the position of NA Director.

The league will not require participants to pay to register and play. Unfortunately, when I asked legit about the league's stance on cash prizes, he told me that the league isn't able to give out cash prizes, at least not in the first season.

"The owner of FGL poured a lot of money into the Anti-Cheat that we will be using. The last update I got was, currently, the FGL cannot give a prize until it closes its deals in the works with some sponsors and traffic starts to hit the site again. But, in the future, you can bet on it being a paying league," says legit.

 A community ran league?

"AA, competitively, has been dying at a slow rate due to other league admins not listening to the community and not being professional. I am going to bring a change to that with the FGL as I will remain unbiased and professional. For everyone who knows me, I am all about sportsmanship and competition. The FGL admins reserve the right to bend minor rules in some cases to force teams to play. I have seen many teams through a rule stick at another team to get a easy win and not play. Well, like I said, the FGL will keep the competition going," mentioned legit after being asked about his thoughts on competitive AA play and how the FGL will differ from other online leagues.

It is still uncertain whether how many divisions the FGL will have for AA. The league officials are still deciding on if they will take a format like CAL (Open, Invite, Professional) or CEVO (Amateur, Professional). The league will also not be holding a placement tournament like CEVO did in their inaugural Pro season.

"The FGL admins know the AA competition teams well and know where to put teams right off the start," says legit.

After asking about newly reformed teams, who used to be in the higher divisions, legit said, "the FGL looks at those teams on a case by case basis. We look at the players within a team, as well, to know where to put a team. We will also get input from the community within the FGL forums on subjects like that. I am all about making the FGL nearly a community ran league, by getting as much input as I can and then making a decision based on the comments given.

Possibility of the FGL holding a US LAN?

LAN events have been something that have been rather popular among the competitive scene in America's Army. With only three LAN events under AA's belt, a fourth LAN, held by the FGL, seems likely to be held in 2009.

"I can say with 100% confidence that FGL will have a LAN in the US and it will support AA with prizes. I can't give the exact location, but it will be centralized in a big city. From what I am gathering, the FGL is trying for it sometime next year," says legit after being asked about a LAN event.

What about 3.0?

"I believe we can get one good season in with this version. If not well thats when the community will step in and give us what they want. We can't tell how different the gameplay will be right now so we cant decide on pausing the league and then resuming it with the new version or having to start a whole new season," he says.

The league plans on getting things started up by September 20, 2008. The league is also still hiring Anti-Cheat Admins and Ladder / League Admins.
