Battlefield 2: Ron H Interview

By: Clint Conner - Published August 20, 2005 at 10:15 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Ever wish you could talk to the guy in charge of leagues or tournaments? Well we had that chance with Ron H from CAL's Battlefield 2 Division. He answered a few short questions for us below.

With both of CAL's Battlefield 2 divisions moving on to week 4, we have a short interview with the man behind it all. Ron H, the Battlefield 2 Game Manager for CAL, recently answered some questions for me. Read on to hear about his opinions on the eSports community and a possible Battlefield 2 tournament at Winter CPL.
Could you please introduce yourself and your position with CAL's Battlefield 2 Division.

Ron H: I'm Ron H, I'm currently the Battlefield 2 Game Manager which puts me in charge of all the Battlefield 2 Divisions for CAL. Currently that consists of our 12 vs. 12, and our 8 vs. 8 Open leagues. After Season 1 we will more than likely be adding invite leagues for each of those. Many will also know me as eS~Crimson, I am a leader of, and as time permits, play for Team eS (Ecce Strages - www.teames.net). We were a Desert Combat clan since the Mod came out for Battlefield 1942, and recently made the switch to Battlefield 2 like many other clans.

What is your impression of the eSports community's participation with Battlefield 2?

Ron H: Our matches are currently Shoutcasted by BFRadio - Battlefield Radio and TSN - Team Sportcast Network. I've been very impressed with both organizations. The community has definitely expressed an interest in having their matches Shoutcasted. I honestly believe having the matches casted between top teams helps promote interest in the game. Being able to watch the top clans play on another and see how well they work together encourages the up and coming teams to work on their teamwork and planning.

Do you feel that Battlefield 2 could become a CPL game?

Ron H: We've already been given approval to say that Battlefield 2 is being considered for a BYOC Tournament at Winter CPL. We're very excited about the level of participation in Battlefield 2 and the interest from the community in the game. Many teams have already indicated to us that they would be interested in attending a CPL event if it had a Battlefield 2 Tournament. Our 8 vs. 8 Battlefield 2 League was designed with the thought of eventually having that feed into CPL. Given enough community support I can definitely see Battlefield 2 becoming a large CPL event.

Do you think CAL could ever get a Battlefield 2 European Division?

Ron H: A European league is being seriously considered, but I cannot release any further details on that at this time.

In your personal opinion, who do you think are the top contenders in the 12v12 Battlefield 2 Division?

Ron H: I try to make it a point not to comment on what I think of specific teams within the league, however I am very impressed with the level of talent that I have seen so far. I will leave the predictions for the news guys, but I definitely have seen some clans that I am not looking forward to playing! I think we will see some of the powerhouse clans from Battlefield, Desert Combat, and other games at the top in playoff time, but I also think there will be some surprises from relatively unknown clans who are going to be looking for a name for themselves.
I'd like to thank Ron H for answering my questions once more. So there you guys have it, Battlefield 2 may be at Winter CPL and we may see a European CAL Division soon. We'd like to wish all the Battlefield 2 CAL staff good luck with their leagues and good luck to all the teams that participate in them.
