Battlefield 2: CAL.na 8v8 Week 5

By: Dan Wall - Published May 22, 2006 at 11:59 PM EDT - Writer Archive
As week 5 comes into play, teams are prepared to face off against eachother on what is most likely the most chopper-dominated map in the game, Dragon Valley. What teams will come out on top with the best helicoptor crews and execution?
Week 4 Review

Week 4 has been a defining moment in CAL Battlefield 2 competition. In Main we saw two of the greatest teams drop from competition - including what is arguably the greatest team in North America at the moment: Team HOT. While Team HOT decided to retire due to a lack of interest in the game after feeling they have accomplished all their goals, TGBF left for a very different reason altogether. Due to a increase of drama lately, TGBF dropped after the recent signing of a deal between GotFrag and the CPL in regarding to shoutcasts that also applies to CAL-BF2. There was much disagreement in the team in regards to the deal, and shortly after their match against 20ID they proceeded to drop from competition. Fortunately for Main, fadeight, formerly Team Pure has opted to regroup and rejoin the Main ranks and complete the season.

As far as the results go... wow what a week. The community witnessed what is possibly the most eye-gouging upset yet this season when an up and coming team First Line blew a 2-1 loss to Warchild on their strongest map, Kubra Dam. Everyone in the community was expecting a 2-0 win by Warchild in order to reaffirm their position in CAL in the top 5, but it didn't happen. Both teams played a very close game, with the last two rounds only being decided by a mere few tickets. Special-K took down Rebels of Mankind in three rounds, while Network of Exceeding Tactics took down iHOT.

In open, two rather unknown teams faced off in a match that for whatever reason generated a lot of hype. Bloody Scotsmen handed Reservoir Dogs their first loss this season. Other interesting matches included a 6th Armored Division taking down 2HOT in 2 rounds, and Team Warchild giving Team PTX their first loss in a game plagued by server problems.

Week 5 Preview

As week 5 approaches, all eyes are on... Open? Interestingly enough, the Main division has lost a lot of heavy-hitters and just isn't as appealing anymore. In open we are finally seeing the juggernaught teams facing off as 20ID: Team Poppycock and Eviscerate prepare for a battle of epic proportions. Team Warchild is still waiting to be truly tested, and will have to wait until next week for what should be their most difficult challenge yet.

In Main, teams like First Line, Network of Exceeding Tactics, and the recently reformed fadeight are proving themselves as great teams while 20ID appears poised to again take the crown. Mean while, Warchild is sitting at a rough 2-2 record and is aiming to come back as strong as ever and prove that they are still the Warchild that most of the CAL comminuty has come to know.

Dragon Valley is a chopper-dominated map where upsets are probably most common to occur in BF2. Some of the strongest teams in CAL are rather weak on chopper maps such as this one, so expect some great teams to take their first loss this week.
