I'd say the ak tbh. 3 quick clicks at long range and the job is done. spray at close range and the job is done.
M4 is like the m1a1 carbine of cod4. however, I would pick it over the m16, barely, because of the fact that it is fully-automatic which helps in close encounters. the m16 is a burst of 3 rounds which is great at long range, but at close range it is difficult to handle. it all really depends on the position of the map you are at tbh.
Recoil is a non-issue in CoD4, making AK the obvious choice. You could start at somebody's head with the AK and spray the entire clip and it'd still be on his head without you moving mouse.
i'm a PS3 player and for a year so i just used the M16, because thats what literally EVERYONE uses since it gains such an advantaged with aim assist. now that im just playing SND, i've started to just use the 74u, and 47, and realized how much better they are than the m16 and mp5.
so basically, m16 for consoles (NOT SnD) AK for pc.
M16 is great for semi-sniping, and when you feel lucky hipfiring, fits pretty good with a silencer imo. AK47 is probably the best weapon overall due to very little recoil in cod to begin with, also this is the weapon of choice when you want to wallbang (defending Crossfire-B from the cafeteria is a real AK spot). M4 is great for when you just see a head over a wall and you can put every single round in that head since it doesnt move at all when firing, it got as much recoil as a softairgun.
