Gotfrag’s Phill Palmer takes a trip down memory lane as he relives the last 2 years and what has happened in the scene as he remembers it.
When you take a look back at Call of Duty 2 what is the first thing that comes to mind?
Speedlink?
Serious?
Dignitas?
WSVG?
It could well be the stress of playing CoD2, tagging but never killing; there again it could be the crazy jump flick shots. What has made CoD2 so popular? I am going to take this opportunity to go back and review what has happened.
The buzz and anticipation surrounding the release of CoD2 was immense. I remember downloading the demo the hour it came out. Driving into the town on the back of a jeep and watching at the time, the amazing graphics. Jump shooting was discovered in the demo as well as bunny hopping but in true IW fashion it was removed. The main thing that hit you when you played it was the recoil, well lack of it. This in my opinion is the main difference between the two CoD games so far. By the look of this it is rectified in CoD4!
As always at the start of new games there were hundreds of line-up changes that resulted in several top teams coming to light, TMGamers, Dignitas and Speedlink. The players in these teams have been battling it out for gold since the start of the game and can still be seen in various top teams now.
Speedlink came out on top and made their name in the history books with a series of unprecedented that began with the first EuroCup of CoD2. After winning various LANs and online events the German giants were finally stopped by Dignitas at CPC1 who eventually ended Speedlink’s reign dominance. For a while before TMGamers had managed to beat Speedlink but couldn’t manage to get to a LAN after joining Check6 where they could really prove themselves.
With opportunities to take the top spot mantle at many LAN events there was no clear team until the EuroCup XVIII finals that featured Dignitas, TeK-9, Speedlink and Check6, who lead by crow shocked the scene by winning with practically a mix. There have been some epic games that have taken place, in my humble opinion the best one was Dignitas versus Check6 EuroCup XVIII LAN finals where it went into 3 overtimes to finally settle the game. Not just because it was so close but this was the peak of CoD2’s professional scene as the coverage was immense being in the TV studio.
It wasn’t to be though for Check6 and the team fell apart leaving a gap in the top team space. The next team to put a string of wins together were digitalMind, who later joined Serious-Gaming. After a flawless performance at SHGOpen it cemented the teams claim as the best. Solz made a name for himself now but as he was forced to go inactive the team dropped from glory and has never fully recovered.
