Call Of Duty: Pro Roundtable: COD5 Beta

In CoD4, the SMG's really stole the show and were overpowered. Do you think the balance of power will shift to another class in the newest version, and if so which?

Mark "wombat" Larsen - It's hard to say for certain without being able to use all the guns in the beta, but I think it really depends on what the competitive maps are like. If the maps are smaller or comparable to CoD4's map size, I could see it being a SMG-heavy game again. However, I expect the maps to be somewhat larger so there should be a good mix between the bolts/smgs/rifles and the occasional sniper.

Taylor "tAYLORRRRR" Sheridan - Everyone always complained about the AK74U. It's true, it was a great gun. The main guns in CoD4 were the AK47 and AK74U. With the addition of bolts to Call of Duty 5, things will be a lot different. I never used the SMG for my team, I've always used the AK47 ( best gun in Call of duty 4 imo ). The players who used the AK47 in CoD4 will be caught using the SGT_44, I almost guarantee it. I know I will be using the BAR and 44. The Thompsan and Mp_40 will be well known SMG's in CoD5. I do think they will be overused, just like the AK74U in CoD4. Bolts will balance it out though.

Robert "griM_" Koster - I definitely agree that the smgs stole the show in cod4. I can only guess that people will flock to the strongest gun. At this time with limited weapons and mods not being out to change damage and everything I can't say which will be the most popular, but you WILL see the majority of people using one gun and trying to master it. I will try and stay with the 1 shot bolt because it was extremely dominant in the earlier COD series.

Jesse "Nrv" Daly - I would have to agree that SMG's did sort of steal the show in CoD4. This really only seemed to happen because they were more capable of reaching specific areas of the map very quickly. If most of the maps used for competition in CoD5 are a bit smaller in size, it is very possible that SMG's will be dominant for taking over bombsites and other map locations very quickly. The AK74u was really the only gun of choice for the SMG class ever since Red Dot Sights were taken out. If the guns in this game are limited to the nation you're playing for on each map this would force players to learn the ways of multiple weapons. The only downside to this is the fact that some nations may become more powerful than others due to the strength of their weapons. A great example of this which I'm actually a bit worried about is how powerful the PPSH might be since no one has gotten to try it out yet.

Joe "Nabore" Amorosa - I think that depends overall on what type of perks and regeneration we decide to use. The reason CoD4 had such a strong SMG presence was because the gun itself moved quicker than any other gun, and allowed you to walk the fastest while iron sighting. In CoD5, this is not an issue, and in fact I did notice the guns were a little harder to spray at the hip.

The bolt rifles really were the meat and potatoes so to speak of CoD 1 and 2. How much different do you think competition will be in this version with the bolts so far only really being effective as sniper rifles? Do you think things will be different once the kar98 is usable?

Mark "wombat" Larsen - I find the bolts effective without being used as a sniper rifle actually. The only problem people seem to have really is that it doesn't always kill with one shot. It seems that most of the time it will kill them in one shot if you hit them in the upper-body though. Because of this, I don't really think there needs to be a lot done to the bolts except to maybe make it more consistent so that an upper-body shot will always kill in one hit.

I don't see how the Kar will make a difference really. Since using the Springfield and Mosin in the beta so far, there doesn't seem to be much difference between the two except a personal preference. I assume this will be the same with the Kar seeing as the in-game stats look pretty similar to the others.

Taylor "tAYLORRRRR" Sheridan - At the start of CoD4 the snipers were almost completely unusable. The bolts right now in CoD5 just don't kill with direct upper chest shots. Once the actual game comes out the bolts will be fixed and they will kill one shot upper body. If they aren't fixed, you won't see anyone using them. I'm sure a lot of people are waiting to use the kar98, but I'm sure it is just as effective as all the rest of the bolts.

Robert "griM_" Koster - I think that a lot of people with good aim will ultimately end up with the bolt. The game will be a lot different and better in my opinion. From looking at the maps in pics and spectator some seem bigger making it more of a bolt/sniper friendly map. Being a sniper/bolter I enjoy this change and hope that the maps are good for competition.

Jesse "Nrv" Daly - All of the bolts in this game will need to be changed with a competitive mod. Each bolt should be just as powerful as the next. They are obviously too weak to even use right now and if they aren't modded, I really don't see anyone using them. The bolts in CoD1 and 2 brought a very interesting aspect to the game which provided very skilled shots, movement, and game play. Having bolts back in CoD competition excites me very much and I cannot wait to see them implemented in the fast paced game play that CoD5 will bring. People actually having to aim each individual shot instead of spraying until you hit your target is definitely something that CoD4 was lacking.

Joe "Nabore" Amorosa - I think bolts are overall the face of Call of Duty and they are personally my favorite guns to use. I feel that bringing bolts back into the game are a good thing in terms of competition and from what I’ve seen so far, they have the potential to be great guns in CoD5. The only thing I noticed that turned me off a little was the difficulty in scoring a 1 hit kill while people are sprinting. It seems that I almost always tag people unless they are standing still. I like all of the bolts to be honest, but yes, I am looking forward to the Kar98, mostly because it has been the main gun in two of the series.
