Call Of Duty: Pro Roundtable: Snipers

How does your class affect your player movement in the game?

Justin "prank" DeMara - Being the scope really doesn't affect my movement throughout the maps even though I feel it should a bit more. I still run around like a lunatic and think I have an SMG in my hand simply because I have a deagle that deals out a solid amount of damage. I feel sometimes you need a scope that can push a flank as fast as an SMG would to pick off unsuspecting enemies and present a surprise factor.

Rob "rob-wiz" Kennedy - It's made me play a little more passive, I still tend to rush places with the deag but overall I'd say you have to play a little more passive with the scope.

Robert "griM_" Koster - The class affects my player movement a lot. I'll usually be one of the last to go into a bombsite. I am more cautious when securing an area checking every spot. I can also say that when moving into a bomb site i'll always look for some object whether it be a car or barrels to get cover from. SNipers need to be behind cover at all times incase we do miss a shot we dont want to be sprayed while reloading.

Alex "MasterAlex" Solis - I already touched on how I move during close range situations but I think for the most part the sniper shouldn't be close to the opposing players at all. They should mostly sit back, watch their spots and rotate when needed.

Chris "-47-!" Maglio - Well you can't exactly go run in guns a blazin' with this class, so you have to be smart about how you approach certain areas. I like to peak things quickly, because you never want to leave yourself exposed for too long or leave too much of yourself exposed, so you aren't an easy spray target for Assaults\SMG's or an easy pick for an opposing sniper. On the defense you kind of just want to set yourself up watching a certain area, cross, etc. and adjust yourself according to where the offensive team is pushing and rotate accordingly. Offense you should just be a step behind your teamates, scope in on a certain area or push, while they move up to clear it and move on from there.

The movement of other players also has a big affect on this class. Usually if a player knows that I tend to pick a certain area or watch the cross on a certain map, they will try to counter it by sprinting by and looking straight down towards the ground. This makes it a harder shot to hit because the skin of the player looks more scrunched together. You have to be more accurate as to where you place the shot.

What kind of skills do you think are required to use your class?

Justin "prank" DeMara - As stated before, sniping requires a substantial amount of aim to be useful to your team. If you are chosen out of the five people on your team to scope you need to be able to use it. You won't have 30 bullets to fire off and correct as you hold your mouse down. You have to pick your shots and make them count. You also have to be loud and obnoxious and throw out everything you see on ventrilo. The sniper is the eye of the team and a quiet one isn't useful at all.

Rob "rob-wiz" Kennedy - The scope is all about positioning, being able to make amazing shots is just a plus. It's all about helping your team hold a site or take one, not making silly movie shots.

Robert "griM_" Koster - Skills that are needed to be a good scope are that of a typical pro gamer on steroids. Obviously we all know that snipers usually have the best reaction time to pull off quick peaks and no scopes. I also think that scopes are usually one of the smartest players on a team. They need to be able to think about how to get kills and search for them while always being covered.

Alex "MasterAlex" Solis - I think awareness, teamwork, and great comms are far more important qualities than being able to 1v4 clutch the opposing team. Take strike for example. When I watch the A cross I to pay attention to how their smokes are landing, if there are any changes in the number of smokes or positioning from round to round. I like to try and predict the strat that the other team is going to use and I call it when I'm confident. In the event I see the other players crossing I call out how many, what guns they were using, and if it looked like they were going to tire room or cafe. If I pick someone I try and call out what class I killed. It is far more beneficial to your team if you are able to call that 3 crossed, 2 spec ops and 1 ak, then to simply say “They are crossing A”.

Chris "-47-!" Maglio - Good aim and fast reaction time, but I guess you could say that about any class obviously, but I think more so in the case of the sniper. Most of the crosses that are picked have a tight time frame as to when you see the player run across your scope so you have to have a quick reaction to make that shot.

If you could give one tip to someone who is just starting out using your class, what would it be?

Justin "prank" DeMara - Practice your aim all around, not just with a scope. The positioning and decision making will come with time as you are practicing your ability to gain a more consistent shot. You will also learn the maps quickly (from a snipers point of view) as you are doing this. I said all around aim because as a scope you will be picking up every type of gun in the game to try and assist your team as an assault player as you find them lying around the map. You need to be able to take and hold a position with every type of MG as well as your scope. I feel the sniper needs to be extremely well rounded in all of the Assault/SMG areas before they become the dedicated scope for a team.

Rob "rob-wiz" Kennedy - Watch prank's cod2 movie and try to replicate those shots in cod4.

Robert "griM_" Koster - I would tell the person to go into dm servers and constantly pug and work on your shot. The ingame smarts will come later with experience but for the time being the most important skill to acquire first is the shot then everything else will fall into place! Happy fragging!

Alex "MasterAlex" Solis - If the other team is running a scope make it a point every round to try and kill him yourself. Its a huge mind game if you are able to consistently frag the other sniper yourself. You both are on an even field and you are almost guaranteed to put him out of his element if he is unable to kill you while you constantly kill him. You will effectively shut down many of the options him and his team feel comfortable doing. If he can't even cover himself what makes him think he can cover his own team?

Chris "-47-!" Maglio - Practice, practice, practice! :P Go in your favorite Strike DM and scope it up vs SMG's and Assaults running around like psychos at you and you will find scrims easier! Other then that, having a low sensitivity helps. I know there are a lot of high sens gamers out there, including people who even use\used mouseaccel (juv3y). I used to use a high sens myself, and you just have to ween yourself off it. I starting taking mine down lower and lower until I eventually got used to it and found myself better off. Adjusting the right DPI\sens for you is a huge part. I use a MX518 myself. I recommend that or a Deathadder.
