The main problem with COD4 is the ability for spectators to view the matches. the reason CS/CSS/TF2, etc became popular and are still popular is the ability of gamers of all levels to log into a matches and watch people from great shooters, strats, overall gameplay. Spectating is very instrumental in any type of sport and it helps to bring in viewers and possible new players that may not have seen the game without viewership.
Also what "premiere" lans COD4 has had there has been little coverage of it video wise. Gotfrag, TSN, etc.. did not nor do they now cover any of the matches with video feeds, primarily because COD4 does not have HLTV or SrcTV, ie CODTV.
In this information age there should be a way to draw in gamers from other platforms or games and it is done by video, not by print on a page showing charts or box scores. You want COD4 to continue being prevalent in esports, then someone better find a way to draw in spectators, otherwise you are pulling from the same gamer pool; and that is getting smaller for people are moving to other games.
In the last 22 days e-rev has only shown 7 COD4 matches, in the last 30 days 10 matches. This is hardly enough compared to the number of SrcTV or HLTV's available at anytime during the day.
We have a small community because we output to a small community. CS/ CSS grows due to its ease of use for a large community and a larger number of spectators.
Also one of the other issues is that most sites only look at the SD mode. COD4 is great because it has some awesome gamemodes like HQ (koth), SAB (sabotage), and even WAR (team deathmatch), yet no esports site ever covers these, only SD.
Esports does not grow, because we limit ourselves.
check tek9 some guy called erazer is making codtv, and doing a bloody good job of it so far.
You play a game because you like it or because it is competitive
and no, all other game types suck competitively for this game.
CoD4 just needs a tool which will broadcast the matches and N2DEEP is right, this game in my opinion is superior to Counter-Strike and I believe things are yet to kick off, and I have never been wrong about these things so far.
As far as competitive game types go , I'd have to say SD is the only one which requires this game to be strategically played out and therefor its the obvious choice.
Lets not forget that we're talking about a game which is only ~1 year old,and take a look at games u mentioned such as SCBW,CS1.6(Source is such crap I do not wish to mention it) and Q3,if you observed their development they hit their strongest point at 2+ years,I believe it will be the same thing with CoD4.
Many times as I played CSS I found myself just checking out macthes to watch diferent strats, players, etc... on SrcTV. We always had friends watch us play, and we did the same. It helps to strengthen the community.
In this era of video on demand, streaming movies/tv, games need the ability to broadcast to a large audience and CODTV would help do that.
So far as gamemode, SD is the popular choice, but if you have ever played SAB, HQ, or TDM competitively then you know that they require just as much strategy especially with the random spawn points of COD4. COD4 could be such a great competitive game, maybe we have to trial and error until COD4MW2 comes out.
hello jk2 ctf friends :]
With the economy at a standstill right now, not many organizations have the proper funding. At the moment competition has died down, the number of LANs has been reduced for a number of reasons. It's nice to see some of these players taking initiative on getting the COD series to be prevalent in competition, but is it enough?
Discussing the future and current state of this series is only one step further to actually having some success with this game. A few guys getting together and having a podcast and a few beers isn't going to get anything done. We need to make progress, and create a full NA team that is dedicated to the promotion, marketing, planning, and direction we're going to take the competitive scene in.
If we're all sitting around waiting for the next installment of the series, then we have to sit around waiting for a a MOD that everyone can agree upon, then we have to sit around waiting for the coverage and tournaments and by then, the next sequel has been announced, and morons are declaring the game dead.
Hopefully the new owners/management of the caleague can come back and revise the structure, provide a place where amateur players can learn and grow competitively without the hassle of other players griefing, and the complication of understanding competition.
The player base of our series is spread out, and has a large variety of types of players ranging from casual to professional and everything in between. We need to attack this large player base, and help stimulate the interest of the game.
Since the gamers are spread thin, and across so many different time zones, unifying them in one centralized location is pretty tough. Providing an area where players can learn to understand the competitive scene would give a boost to the community player base.
As a community we have to work on accepting new players - everyone has seen what use to happen on CAL forums when someone asked for help. Everyone was non-responsive, disrespectful, and unhelpful. Obviously some of these are small issues, but we need a direction to head in.
Lets face it, we're not going to get help from the larger communities, and some of the top organizations are reluctant to help because of what has happened in the past. Lot's of failing going on in the hands of those we cannot control.
What we really need to do is man up and take matter into our own hands to get sh it done. If we want this community to grow, we need to grow the balls first and take the initial step. We've got to stop waiting around for these companies to catch on to hype, and introduce it to them.

zigzag
I just don't think people care enough, no one is getting paid to promote the game so why should they?
