I have heard people say to use 101 101, but I have also heard that those rates are for LAN and using rates between 30-70 are best for online play. Does anyone know which is right?
Yeah, I would have to agree with #3 phnx- as well. For those of you who don't know, they are; rate 2500 cl_cmdrate 101 cl_updaterate 101 ex_interp .01.
I use cmd - 80 and update 80with the rate a 20000. I do this lower because I usually won't get any choke or loss and it stays consistant. I have Comcast Cable Internet which is clocked at 3.0MBps, but whenever I use those LAN rates I get static choke or loss.
"most" servers these days (151,velocity,hi-def,a2g,gr,branzone) etc. are all good enough to use lan rates, unless of course you live west and play in east , or east and play in west. But then there are some pubs that are quite bad, and give u massive choke. Then I'd suggest you lower your updaterate until you get no choke. But if you're pro, you shouldn't be pubbing, get esea ;-]
i don't know why everyone calles those LAN rates. when i lan i use the same rates as i use online: rate 25000, cl_updaterate 501, cl_cmdrate 501, ex_interp 0
i use update 501 because it allowes ex_interp to remain at 0 (completely turned off), and cmd 501 to match. what #18 says is incorrect, the server will not automatically set your interp for you, your counter-strike will automatically set it for you according to your cl_updaterate.
#11 that's just lame low rate crap. use standard 101 101 25k 0.01 and everything is just fine. and if anyone would do it, the world would be a better place
This is depended on the server u are playing in, number of players in it, your connection speed/state (wich may depended on the time u are playing) , etc
So if you want to get the best rates u need to use net_graph command every time u connect to a server. Read this documention about it : http://home.covad.net/~k25125/SteamyThing..
Or if u don't want to learn net_graph, simply use cl_cmdrate 101 cl_updaterate 101 rate 25000 ex_interp 0.01 if u use Cable Internet cl_cmdrate 30 cl_updaterate 20 rate 3500 ex_interp 0.05 if u use dial up connection
sigh ... everyone just repeating themselves here. Probably because this a year-old thread that #28 bumped.
#8 the rate calculator is a good idea but it's actually inaccurate because the guy who made it used some old guide for calculating rates, when really only rate/cl_rate should be based off of your download/upload speed.
rate 20000 is the maximum rate on the half-life engine, period. Using 25000 isn't any better so don't tote it like it is.
cl_updaterate 100 - using 101 will hardly make a difference, and if the server has sv_maxupdaterate 100 instead of 101 then using ex_interp 0 (as #18 suggests) will set your interp incorrectly for the amount of updates you're actually getting. If you use 0.01 you can avoid this but 0.01 isn't always the best despite what people say; since it assumes every server you play on is 100 FPS or better.
cl_cmdrate 100 - Unless you're using developer 1 and fps_max at a higher value, there's no point in setting this any higher than 100 because it's capped by how many frames per second you're generating (which is 100 except for the conditions described above). Really 101 is just misleading, as is fps_max 101. However it won't make a difference at all if you set this to 100 or 101.
ex_interp 0 - Never manually change your interp, just let it automatically set itself, and lower your updaterate by 10 or 20 if player models appear to jump around.
cmdrate and updaterate
http://scripting.elxdraco.net/calc.html
someone posted this on here the other day and it helped me out alot.
cmdrate 101
updaterate 101
Use LAN rates, but only if you have broadband, hopefully 384 Kbps+ (DSL) / 3 Mbps+ (Cable)
i use update 501 because it allowes ex_interp to remain at 0 (completely turned off), and cmd 501 to match.
what #18 says is incorrect, the server will not automatically set your interp for you, your counter-strike will automatically set it for you according to your cl_updaterate.
i've tried using the lan rates but my choke and loss get too high
i also have cable internet but adelphia sucks my dong
rate 10000
cl_updaterate 60
cl_cmdrate 101
but if anyone knows how to fix loss or better rates for a bad connection tell me :)
25k rate
80 updaterate
105 cmdrate
0 interp
Thats taken a lil while of messing around with them to suit my connection though.
cl_rate 20000
cl_updaterate 101
cl_cmdrate 101
rate 25000
ex_interp 0.05
net_graph 3
So if you want to get the best rates u need to use net_graph command every time u connect to a server.

cl_cmdrate 101 cl_updaterate 101 rate 25000 ex_interp 0.01 if u use Cable Internet
cl_cmdrate 30 cl_updaterate 20 rate 3500 ex_interp 0.05 if u use dial up connection
sorry for bad english
