Figure out your budget first mate. I'm sure the next comments will be some ridiculous setups anyways because people seem to forget that not everyone is going to spend $1500+ on a computer when they have other things like... rent to pay.
you can get a really nice computer for around 800 dollars. a computer that can run many of the most graphics intesive games and will run cs without a single hitch. www.newegg.com is where you should start. just make sure you get a 7200 rpm hard drive, at the very least a 2.6 ghz intel core 2 duo, and a really nice 512mb video card. everything else including the motherboard, ram, power supply, and case can be as cheap as you can find.
build a pc, using about 500$ @ fry's electronics or tiger direct / newegg(since im sure you're gona use the same cd-drive, and other parts not needed to be bought, get a new harddrive though if needed) and you'll get a PC high powered(can run crysis, my uncle has one, except he spent 680$ O_O). Or for a more easier choice if youre just gona run cs/source go buy the gotfrag ones.

just buy each part equally. dont buy a 300 dollar video card, 300 dollar processor, and 25 dollar motherboard.
or post in the gotfrag hardware section and let some other people have a shot at building a 500 dollar system off newegg for you
