Okay, I have come to realize that there are many helpfull and intelligent people on gotfrag, despite the constant flamers. So HOPEFULLY! you guys can give me some insight on this because I am not very computer, and especially internet savvy.
Okay so I have Time Warner Road Runner cable. Best in my area. Erie, PA. I used to always ping around 45 to Chicago and 25-30 to New York servers. And same for VA servers.
As of a few days ago this suddenly changed. Now to Chicago servers I ping a TAD lower. And to new york servers I ping like 55-70's.
I know this has to do with routing, but why would it suddenly change? I am east and it has always been one certain way. I have no intentions on getting GameRail to fix it, and please don't inform me to call my ISP, because all ISP providers have idiots behind the desk who don't care about what you ping.
I know a lot of you are computer and internet wizzes like a few of my teamates, I just dont want to bother them with another problem. :/
Would really appreciate some insight or even some answers. Thanks guys! Appreciate it!
nothing u can do buddy. ur ISP switched up ur routing. If you didnt make ne changes to ur pc then its all them.
edit: comcast did it to me in michigan last year, i went from pinging 20-30 on chitowns to pinging 50's. and virginia went from 50's to low 30's. then i think they realized they fu*ked up n went back.
Yea... if you're sure you havn't changed anything than its a routing change by them. Nothing you can really do other than call them and complain, but they won't really mind your complaints of 20 more ping.
For me I would ping normally high 30s-40s to New York servers and then all of the sudden i was getting 90s ping. At first I thought it was all servers, but soon found out it was only Aim 2 Game servers. I emailed them and they said they would fix the problem but never did.
I had this problem with another server company years ago and i emailed them and they fixed the problem right away.
First figure out if it is just certain companies before you blame your isp. Also take the IPs, run a trace route and figure out where you are running into a snag. You should then be able to target the problem.
your isp will use whatever lines it can get the cheapest, at one point my isp routed all its connections to Chicago through Dallas (me living in ND made my ping to chi servers go up to 60-90 from 20-30) most isp wont guarantee low latency and will tell you your SOL. there isnt much you can do but wait.
long answer short, it's the internet. most providers are over-sold causing bandwidth issues. when too much bandwidth puts stress on certain routes, latency jumps, or routes change
here's what you do. invest, got money? get in with the top companies and get yourself some BGP access and use your own routes. hopes yous gots millions
like you said its your routing.. your internet does somethign called hops, each hop is basically where the net goes through to get from point A to point B.. they obviously lowered the amount of hops it takes to get from your area to chicago at the cost of increasing them to ny ones
another thing that might be happening, some of the hops your net is taking are lagging, so it might not be an increased number of hops, just ones that are lagging
#1 it might go back to normal, you never know #2 even if you did get through to the idiots at your ISP they would explain to you that low latency is not promised, they only promise a certain speed - in other words they dont give damn if you suddenly have higher pings, they will do nothing to fix it
annd #3 you should do a tracert to NY servers to figure out which hop if any is the culprit.. you wont be able to fix it yourself but youll have peace of mind knowing exactly whats wrong
Hmm you can try resetting the router and whatnot. I have the same ISP and I remember for about 2 years in a row I would have odd pings in the Fall for about 3 weeks. Just wait it out a bit longer considering the ping is horrible like mine was.
My ISP did this quite a few months back. All my pings to all servers went up double what they were. I've tried bugging them through technical support for over four months to at least give me specifics of what they've done, but they've just sat on their asses.
I can only play reasonably on Chicago servers (which are now 60ms), and even then, it's not exactly easy or worth my time. I'm gonna have to be switching ISPs soon. And that's basically your only option.
Whenever I run into latency problems I do that as an immediate troubleshoot. 19 times out of 20 it doesn't work, but when it does it saves you the hassle of actually trying to fix it.

same problem happened to me. except i always pinged 50 in ny servers and i live in ct. lucky my, when i called, i was talking to a guy who actually had a brain. he knew what latency, ping, fps games, routing all that s`hit was, unlike most people behind the phone. so i basically told him my problem and he said he'll change something, most likely the routing. bam few minutes later i pinged 10-20 in all ny servers. :D
Smart people only!

Usually its the server companies that have the issues, not your isp.

that'll be a good read for you too
