Okay, so the other day my monitor crapped out. It was an old CRT, which I've used to play CS for about 7 years now... I always ran my game at 640x480 at 120hz refresh rate.
Now I have this new, giant LCD monitor that looks amazing, but when I go to play CS it feels like I'm lagging or something. I still get a solid 100fps, but it feels like I'm playing with an inconsistent 30fps.
I'm using the VGA cable. And I'm running an NVIDIA 7600 GS OC.
It's not a 120 hz monitor so it will naturally only redraw the screen 60 times a second (instead of 120). In your launch options for cs you can try setting -freq 75 and if your monitor supports a refresh rate of 75 it will ameliorate the choppiness you see, but unless you get a monitor that is truly capable of redrawing the screen 120 times a second (ie a 120 hz monitor) that will be the best you can do.
edit: Nevermind, it IS a 120 hertz monitor. I glanced but didn't notice immediately. If I remember correctly I read something about needing to hook up 2 dvi inputs to access the 120 hertz refresh rate. I'm not entirely sure so I'll search for the article and post it here if I find it.
edit 2: "There was one person complaining about 120hz not working in XP. I have it working in 120hz fine in XP. You just have to know how to manually install the drivers. Word of caution though, USE THE DVI CABLE that comes with the monitor. A normal DVI cable will make your 120hz look like 4 split screen on your monitor. If you look at the regular DVI and the one that comes with the monitor you will notice that the 120hz DVI cable has more pins. I also tested it in Vista 64-Bit, 120hz worked fine with the installation of the drivers. I wouldn't buy this monitor if you're not an FPS game player. It's not going to help you in WoW or solitaire. This is strictly for the FPS crowd and people who can't give up the 120hz or don't want lag. Some people can't see the difference but I can and tested it at lagom.nl to see the lag difference between this monitor and my 2490WUXI, the $1,200 monitor lagged behind at 0.030 seconds against this monitor. Of course that monitor wasn't made for gaming."
There you go. You don't need to hook up 2 dvi cables, but just install the drivers and hook up the dvi cable that came with the monitor. Have fun with it. Let us know if it's as smooth as your crt because I might just buy one myself. By the way, how does it look at lower resolutions (1024x768)?
And yeah, the lower resolutions look... like... wow. Incredible. I have mine on 1152 x 864, and before that 1024 x 768. It looks absolutely astonishing. I'm not one to usually be impressed by just how a simple desktop image looks, but when I turned this thing on... wow.
your monitor is not a 120hz LCD... you own a VX2262wm... the 120hz version is the VX2265wm.. i own a Samsung Syncmaster 2253bw... all i did was add -freq 75 to my launch options.. vsync off.... i get 100fps with pretty smooth movement on 1280*1024.
Yeah, I pulled that quote off of newegg though. I'm busy so I didn't have a lot of time to look for the article I read before, but it is the same monitor model that you have. Try it out and let us know if it worked.
edit: Well they showed where I was wrong so all my advice was wrong haha. Didn't have time to look close sorry. Anyway, just try the -freq 75 in your launch options to see if the monitor will refresh that quickly. Otherwise you are better off just returning the thing and getting a true 120 hz monitor if you don't want to adapt.
#17 thats a good start... anyway... just add the command to your launch options through steam... -freq 75... this should make the gameplay a lot smoother.. just make sure you play on 1280*1024 or less... those are the only resolution to support 75hz... higher than 1280 is 60hz...

My friend is telling me that I should use the DVI and install the drivers for this monitor...
What should I do? I understand that it's not going to be as smooth as the CRT was at 120hz... But I mean, it's REALLY choppy in-game.
Any help here would be hot!

Can Goo_Face really save Sirk from ultimate choppy doom?!? Stay tuned for his next post!

Uninterested in CRT's
Should I still install the drivers for it though..? :/
