I highly suggest Platoon and Apocalypse Now. There is also The Pianist, The Thin Red Line, Schindlers List, Patton, Letters from Iwo Jima
Apocalypse Now is more about the way the war affects a person mentally and emotionally. It's about a Captain in the U.S. Army who is sent on a classified mission by an Army Intelligence Unit to Cambodia to assassinate a U.S. Green Berets Colonel who they say has gone insane. The Colonel had set himself up as a God amongst a local Vietnamese tribe and the Army realized that this man needs to be taken out for the sake of the Army and its troops. Great great movie with very good acting. Watch out for Marlon Brando his acting should have definitely won him an oscar.
Platoon is about a platoon in Vietnam who face severe moral crisis when confronted with the horrors of war and fighting. Fking amazing move with great acting which also won Best Picture in 1986.
Full Metal Jacket is about a pragmatic U.S. Marine who observes the dehumanizing effects the Vietnam War has on his fellow Marine recruits from their brutal basic training to the battles of War in Vietnam. R. Lee Emrey somehow didn't win an oscar for his performance as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman the Drill Instructor for the first half of the movie. His performance was amazing.
