Counter-Strike: NoA sent to loser's bracket

By: Trevor Schmidt - Published July 30, 2004 at 11:38 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Shock and awe takes a new form here at the CPL as TAU shows the #2 ranked team in the World no one can be overlooked. The inside story behind the match looks at the personal side of what could be the biggest upset of the tournament.
The first indication that ESWC may not be random sounded just after 10pm CST. The shouts of excitement and shock reigned from a crowd watching NoA lose to TAU. TAU, who are they? Texas Area Untouchables. A long time CPL team with a lot of individual CS experience beat NoA with a strong first half of 9-3 as Terrorist, 13-11.

TAU celebrates
The cheers for a team most didn’t even know came as a surprise while the crowd waited around to see NoA exit the tournament area. The biggest story has to be the Dave “amic” Jacobson. Amic’s relationship with NoA’s member Griffin “ShaGuar” Bengar is almost legendary among the top players in North American. Having spent many days together and Amic even once being rumored as NoA’s 6th he strikes a surprising blow.

“I hate to tell you I told you so,” said Amic after the match. His conversation prior to the match with ShaGuar took the form more of a “don’t be surprised if…” with the outcome proving the prediction.

NoA getting nervous
Early results show a massive following as TsN reports 4,500 listeners while almost the entire BYOC followed on the two big screens inside the event. NoA did try to make a match of it in the second half adding to the suspense. A seven to one round run by NoA after a 1-2 deficit to start the half resulted in a final deciding round. TAU, forced to play in almost a save buyout, won using mostly deagles and picked up guns.

TAU’s roster consisted of many CAL-I players and former members of top teams. Kevin "brzrk" Russell, Corey “sinyster” Deveraux, Benjamin “pb” Johns, Robert Irey and Amic made up the five for TAU. Both pb and Amic were initial members of iFate, a team created by Fatal1ty.

TAU now moves on to face CAL-I season 10 Champions, Rival. The Cinderella story could end against arguably one of the hottest teams in America coming of Lethal Gamer’s LAN win and a great run at the ESWC USA event. NoA on the other hand drops down into the loser’s bracket with a match against Evolution and assuming a win should face the winner of Gamewyze/Punto cL.

NoA lost on purpose because the less 'known' and better teams are in the Loser's bracket. This means they will not have to face Rival or TSG - one of them (or both) will/could be eliminated which makes going to the finals easier for NoA. Trust me, they had this all planned out and wouldn't let TAU beat them if they really needed the win.

#4 I hope you're joking (hard to tell on the internet) and you're not THAT much of an idiot.

Anyway, I couldn't care less about tau or noa but I'll say one thing, pistol rounds are still far too important in mr12. Any team that wins both pistol rounds has basically got themselves halfway to the finish line. I know the money changes kinda killed off mr15 but the impact of pistol rounds is still a big problem.

rob I dont liek Noa but im going to have to reluctantly agree with you. The first 9 rnds I saw from Noa I couldn't tell the diffrence between pregame and then. If any team 3D, mibr, sk, u5 ANYONE positioned themselves, pushed, ran around with their knifes out and played like they wanted to lsoe I would say they were throwing the match. I know this is a excuse by the Noa fanboys but watch the demo and you will see what I mean they gave the first 9 rnds to them, their playstyle was to much off to hwo they normally play, why they would do this is beyond me.....

TAU player Benjamin "pb" Johns is better known as Adam "Pointblank" Johns. This guy can juice 2 faces with one shot. Pointblank is a guy I want watching my back just like he was watching Amic's back when complexity players go postal.

What's your opinion on a team like NoA?

Elude: The thing about them is everyone knew they were pretty good, but uh, now i think they're not as good as they used to be if that makes any sense because everyone knows how they play, I mean they really don't change their stuff up much, and if I got second place I wouldn't either, but they're not as unbeatable as before, i think they might get upset possibly.

Gosu: You can't buy teamwork. You can't buy teamwork.

What's the big problem with pistol rounds being far too important? I think the money changes, although I don't like them, have definitely lessened the effect pistol rounds have on the match... 3D has often lost the pistol and won the second round, though, for example. Winning both pistol rounds should give you a big advantage.

#2 Of course the skill gab is diminishing , and this has been a fact for many many months now. You reach a point in this game ( and many other discipline ) where the steps to get better are very hard to climb. Every little increase in skills or execution is the product of alot of hours and very hard work . All these cal-i level teams can beat eachother on any map anytime now. And that is good news for everyone !

So stop this clueless and childish flaming on the teams that where alone up there before ! It is ridiculous . Try to understand how this game works now....

if a team like NoA, who gets thousands of dollars in sponsorship money can lose a team like TAU, then e-sports is a fricken joke.

If this game keeps lessening the gap between the best teams, and some of the mediocore teams, then make it a Best of 7.

NoA would NOT drop a match on purpose especially when the next map in the winners bracket is NUKE, which is their best map. The 'losers bracket' theory holds NO WATER whatsoever. Shut the hell up.

The picture just posted of the TAU team doing the "Happy Dance" to celebrate their win over NoA is great. I would like to see alot more photos posted. These pics really add to the comentary, on the internet it is hard to get the emotion of the players and the crowd. I'll bet the room was electric during the last map.

you guys realize this, NoA has been known to lose matches so as to not give away strats for later rounds, losing to TSG on train at ESWC USA Finals, they said they werent using their best strats since they knew they already qualified for the main event. Using their best strats would have given teams a look into their strats going into the ESWC championships. Of course they wanted to win, but considering the finals are on de_inferno and they played TAU on inferno, NoA probably didnt think that they had to use their best strats. Had they used their best strats and make it to the finals, that other team would be prepared for some of NoA's strats... They did lose, people lose, the Yankees lose.. doesnt mean that their done. Now in the losers bracket they have no choice to win and use their best strats.. but just dont think NoA got outplayed... maybe NoA wasnt "playing" to their calibur.

NoA purposely dropping down to the losers bracket is not only a far-fetched idea and a stupid excuse for them losing, but it wouldn't help anyways, it just makes them easier to eliminate if they draw an oppponent who stands a chance against them, especially if they are going for the win (as they should be) and not just a high placing..

It does not make ANY sense to lose on purpous. You WILL eventualy either reach the finals or go to the losers bracket. there are many teams allready in the loser's bracket that could beat NoA. , so why push your luck it is ridiculous.

well i originally figured that they had thrown the match because honestly who loses to tau... but then i saw knoxvilles face on gotfrag..which makes me wonder... Possibly NoA really underestimated tau and from what i heard they played the match like it was pregame...Did they save their real inferno strats and playing styles for the grand finals all while trying to beat tau... I really dont know.. maybe noa just sucks

Personally this is how i see it. TAU is a good team... altho i do believe NoA was better. And i do believe this match was a role of the dice.

Look at the first half... noa narrowly loses first round... which sets the pace for the next 2 rounds. SO that's 3 wins for TAU right there. Then, when NoA can buy.. it comes down to a bomb, naikon, and a member of TAU. With some trickery naikon gets picked while defusing.

That's 4 for TAU.

Then some bad calls, some movements from NoA at bigbombsite at the worst possible time got them flanked on numerous occasions.

Then NoA, being forced to save again.

NoA had around 5 save rounds in the first half. Which i think explains the 3-9 score.

Then it's just random rounds or 1 bad call to end the game.

rofl, it seemed like NoA was trying to be "euro" and make up new stacks that just werent cutting it... And dont you dare say that they forfieted this match to get an easiar schedule...why would they do that???? that makes no sense what so ever because with that easiar schedule comes single elimination, why not go as far in the upper bracket before reaching that point?? And the farthest they would be able to go without winning CPL is Lower bracket winners, which NEVER wins the CPL, due to the fact that they have to win 2 matches in the finals. TAU outplayed NoA.

lol saving their best strats for when theyre out of the tournament maybe. They wouldnt lose on purpose to hide their strats or go to the losers bracket because the teams arent good there. Theyre going to have to play the good teams anyway, and wouldnt you rather save your two loses for the "real" competition instead of throwing a match early in the tournament. People that think they threw it are the same people that think 3d doesnt try for online matches.

Major props to NoA on their comeback. As much as the loss came at a heartblow to a lot of people, as me. TAU put up a good fight in the second half against NoA and it sucks for NoA losing 13-11. Biggest upset of the CPL so far.

Will we see more?
