Counter-Strike: CAL: Pay to play? The entire story

CPL and CAL
Recently the news broke that the Cyberathlete Amateur League (CAL), the online gaming league run by the management of the CPL was potentially considering a “pay to play” format, where teams would have to pay per-season fee’s to be competitors in the league. The initial announcement has since been verified by our online staff, and we’ve gotten more details about the future of CAL.

We’ve spoken to the man at the top of both organizations, Angel Munoz, to get all of the details on the upcoming changes to CAL. First, he would like to reassure everyone that the upcoming season of CAL will not require payment to join the league. Their plans for introducing a fee system to join are exactly that – plans, nothing that’s going to happen immediately. The number they have in mind is $5 per player per season, though that figure is certainly subject to change. They’re not planning to introduce the fee’s in the upcoming season.

Nearly a year ago, the CPL announced that it was going to become officially associated with CAL, at least for presentation. Angel would be the President of both organizations, and the theme suggested that they may become more integrated. After speaking to Angel today, it’s clear that more cooperation between the online and professional leagues it is their intent. In fact, he was forthcoming in saying that CAL – the Cyberathlete Amateur League, was no longer very amateur.

The community drives in the league

Part of the plan of introducing a pay-to-play system in CAL is that it will allow the league to grow, not necessarily in terms of team or player count, but more to make the league more of a business – and in doing so improve it. Angel explained that the fee’s charged to enter the league would go directly back into it to improve the quality of service that the league delivers to it’s teams, increasing the prizes available to the players and teams involved, and helping to secure more paid admin positions to handle the day to day operations of the league.

The trend is clearly driven towards making CAL an attractive business venture to the CPL. He confirmed that the league would certainly feature the official game of the CPL World Tour – the CPL’s primary focus in the year 2005 which will feature a single game, which will be 1v1 deathmatch. That game, which has yet to be announced, will not become the only CAL game – they have no intention of removing Counter-Strike.

When we asked Angel about the consideration that the number of teams in the league would slip significantly, he brushed it off – saying that if teams don’t want to play in CAL, they can certainly play in other online leagues. In fact, this decision will make it easier for other leagues to become larger. The CPL’s goal is to make the league better, not larger. Additionally, they would not confirm (but were considering) the idea of making the Invite divisions of the league free.

Expansion past North America

But what about Europe, Asia and the rest of the world? They’re invited too, eventually. Angel said that there’s no doubt, they want to expand CAL to become a worldwide league, even referencing the name of “The Planet”, their new infrastructure sponsor. Just as the CPL events have always aspired to, and the World Tour seems to be doing, CAL has plans to expand to beyond the borders of the United States.

We’ve all got a while to wait before we find out the fate of CAL, but in the meantime we can anticipate the upcoming announcement to conclude this tournament, with more information about the World Tour. Stay tuned!

I believe this to be a bad move, and I certainly would not pay to play in CAL if it will still have 15 yr old immature kiddies administrating the league.

BRING BACK FRANK

I will never pay to play, regardless of the cost. This isn't Everquest, where I'm paying server maintinence. We know you're sponsored for the website.

You want money for running CAL? Hell, I'll run CAL for free.

God, "professionalism" is the worst thing to happen to counterstrike. Who said that's the right direction to go for this *video game*?

I don't agree with this. Look at it this way.. You don't see pro baseball, football players paying to play in the NFL and etc. I don't see CAL offering enough servers or cheat support to have this be successful.

wow. It's suppose to be an *AMATEUR* league. In my opinion, there are a couple flaws to paying. For one, it is difficult to handle anything with admins. Cal-support has no purpose since no admin is in it (in my experiences), e-mailing is virtually useless, and trying to talk to one via IRC (through PM) is hard as well. Now I respect what they do to keep the league running (scheduling matches, etc.) but why would I want to pay these people? If they do decide to make the invite divisions free, that would be another flaw. Above all, these teams have the backing of their sponsors and would easily be able to pay. Why should they be excluded from paying when they are the ones that could most easily do this? Anyways, I just find this to be extremely ridiculous.

This couuld do one of 2 things, get rid of a significant amount of hackers. or get kids who cheat who figure "hey i'll pay 5 dollars now, cheat, win the division and get whatever prize they offer."

Also assuming that no teams drop the league do you guys understand how much money this is? $5 per player is in the neighbor hood of $700,000 a season. and i can bet that it wont all go back into the league. I bet Angel and some of the higher ups in the league will be pocketing half that money.

Better upgrade your admins if you plan to pay them, otherwise give a cash prize for every division. Everyone here knows the admins lack quality in handling problems with teams, and idling cal-support, they should all be required to idle cal-support unless they arent on IRC, if they arent at their keyboard then the dont need to have IRC open anyways, if they want money, they can start earning it.

The day I pay $5 to play a videogame in an online league is the day Bret Favre pays $5 to play for the Greenbay Packers in the National Football League.

I think when they mean have cal a worldwide online league it won't affect us much. Americans will have thier own division where they only play Americans. And Euros will play Euros. I doubt cal would make American teams play Euro teams. Having 200+ ping is hard to play on.

Some of you need to re-read that article cuz it seems you have no idea what your talking about.

#39 Then you need to get out into the world and get a life if your gunna blow your 20$ on something that will get you nothing...

UGS > CAL
play ugs...

Why would I want to pay for an online service like "The Sims Online"
I paid for the game I spent that $50 I want everything else to be inclueded you want me to spend more I will by an expansion pack.

Angel, You want it to grow. How about you do the basic rule. GIVE TO GET! Stop hogging the cash from Intel/NVIDIA and all the rest of your sponsors and go live in an apartment make the league grow off of that cash and then you can be like ENRON and steal it later...

Decent idea, but not for CAL-O level. It's just unfair for teams that break up so easily and often and may just join for fun need to pay $5 a season. Not even $5 a year. I think CAL-O should remain free as a "low end, for fun" division and as you progress you accept the pay-to-play as you want to progress further into CAL. Whether that sounds right or not, I just don't see paying to play CAL-O very fair. Also, if they're doing this they'd better start giving out prizes in all leagues, otherwise I can see UGS > CAL yet again.

Is CAL and CPL not making enough with all their sponsers? I doubt it, the fact is, they could already be paying admins to help run the league better but it sounds to me that Angel would rather have the players pay for the admins then take money outta his own pocket.

Most likely they do, but now there will be more money for prizes. This is to improve the league not make it larger like the dude said, go play in UGS if you don't want to pay $5

Also, I am agree this is just a money-grubbing move. As mentioned this is huge money, over $2 million a year if everyone still plays. Now, do you think that all finals will start offering 500k prizes for winning? Seriously doubt that. As mentioned, this is AMATEUR, for fun, to get experience. And no it's not worth the money. What do you get? To play some Official matches? Go to UGS and play for free. And just scrim as you do already and forget those few official matches and just LAN to get known. Either way this is yet another pretty lame move.
