Rival is the best placing American team at this Summer CPL. Emotion was shown throughout the matches, while you could sense the electricity in the atmosphere watching each kill. Check out Rival's run out of the BYOC Kingdom. Team Rival (http:www.team-rival.net) has gone against all predictions for the Summer CPL and has finally got the monkey off of its back. For a few CPL’s now Rival has come into the tournament very hot, but always ended up finishing well below their expectation. As of 11:15pm CST, Rival is officially the highest placing US team. After some great play in the winner’s bracket, beating Punto CL and TAU, Rival fell to Team DiE (5th place finish here at CPL) on de_train. Since dropping to the Loser’s Bracket, Rival has played like a team possessed. Beating NoA in overtime on de_dust2 was a very exciting match to watch. The entire crowd was into it in the BYOC area and the large TV screen for watching HLTV next to the press area. You could hear the screams from people, cheering both teams on as each kill was closely watched. Crowds of media people and players alike were standing around watching both teams. Rival faced their first European test in the form of Germany’s mousesports on de_cpl_mill. Traditionally an American map, Rival was out of the gate fast, picking up a lead of 9-3 on Terrorist side. With some great pistol round play all tournament long, Rival made quick work of mouz on CT side, securing a 13-3 win. Mouz would later claim seventh place over g3x. Rival was banging on all cylinders by now, having huge momentum as they would go on to face ESWC champions, Denmark’s Titans on de_nuke. Rival has played very well on nuke in the past few months, beating 3D at ESWC USA and many other top teams recently. They would have to play the Titans, who looked almost unbeatable early on in the tournament. Rival got emotional every round, picking themselves when losing rounds. They played solid both halves picking up the victory over a daunting opponent. Momentum was now in Rival’s favor for the rest of the tournament. From underdogs to favorites in a few matches, Rival has proved they can beat anyone in the world. Going down 5-7 at halftime after some great performances from D-Skyline, Rival used a pistol most often called the “runaround”, trying to get CT’s out of position by running around the map. Superb individual play by medias, picking up three kills on catwalk, got Rival on the right foot for the half. Dust2 is one of Rival’s strongest map and it certainly showed here by not letting D-Skyline pick up any momentum. Clutch play from everyone got Rival the chance to move on and play SK on de_cpl_mill. Rival has confirmed people’s thoughts going into the CPL as America’s number one team. Everyone has shown great teamwork and communication with each other. All of Rival has come through when counted upon to turn out huge performances. Rival has finally arrived on the international counter-strike community. Rival’s Road out of the BYOC kingdom First Round : de_dust2 over Prescription Death Second Round : de_inferno over Punto CL Third Round : de_nuke over TAU Fourth Round : de_train loss to DiE Fifth Round : de_dust2 over NoA Sixth Round : de_cpl_mill over Mouz Seventh Round : de_nuke over Titans Eighth Round : de_dust2 over D-Skyline Ninth Round : PENDING Also to be noted is the great tournament played by Team DiE. Two American teams in the top 5 hasn’t been seen in a long while. Congratulate both teams on their success. |

good to see medias and hanes finally emerging from the "i cant go to cpl because im too young" cacoons :)

What a load of rubbish. I knew americans would start hailing Rival greatly as the most awesomest no.1 U.S. clan thats ever been soon as they beat Titans. It was like all that bandwagon crap after TAU beat NoA 13-11. It was like it at ESWC with TSG. Everyone was happy to accept that Rival would do ok/underperform at cpl, so don't suddenly turn around and say all this hype-****.
All that aside, well played to Rival for getting 3rd at cpl. 1hp potti...
But now there are two Euros teams in the final, both from Sweden like CPL Summer 2003, Team9 vs. SK in the Final, 2 swedish teams. As I'm from EU I think it's very nice with two EU-teams in the final, but even more nice with 2 Swedish teams! :D:D:D
" Rival faced their first European test in the form of Germany’s mousesports on de_cpl_mill."
Haha, you americans, it's you who makes the EU vs. USA thing...
USA don't suck at CS and Euros are not dominating.
But, I guess Mill is more a USA-map the Euro-map, but not more then Fire, why do they play that map when nobody in Europe scrim on it? That just lame.
#8 Agree
but GJ rival...haha you gotta wonder what destructo is thinking now..
Potti = 1hp.
:[.
Before the event everyone was on the NoA wagon with big numbers also with 3D and TSG. As soon as 3D and NoA started sucking everyone looked for a new team. Some went with d!e, others Rival, etc and eventually everyone was a Rival fanboy. I admit I'm not a huge Rival fan, but I knew they had a good chance at Top 8. I predicted they'd be top 2 American team at the least, but I also didn't think they would do this well.
So for all you who "called it" and all the hype, give it up. Everyone expected Rival to faulter as usual but as soon as they got going it was fanboy time. Congrats to Rival, but admit they were unexpected winners in the community, even if their recent performanes showed they had a chance.
#17, Agree! Word! You said it! :)
i agree with #11, american typecasting play as US vs 'euros'.
is like like americans can't comprehend so many different countries having better teams than them, so they gotta lump them all together.
Secondly, about the whole USA vs EU thing, I don't believe that's necessarily bad. It's friendly competition for 90% of the players and fans, and it gives players some feeling of pride if a team from their country is doing well. Also, #19, many Americans may feel that USA is all that, but seriously, how else would you do a simple rivalry? They are two different continents for one thing, so to distinguish both parties that way seems the most logical. Hard to do rivalries when theres 7 or so countries to have to be named :P
Anyway, gj rival
About the EU vs US thing though, you gotta remember that there is a 8 hours difference between CST and CET (european central time). Meaning all of the european teams were playing during the nighttime until morning. You'd expect them to be a bit sleepy and not performing on the top of their game when they are playing at 5 AM European time :p.
Even Midway was shamelessly rooting for 3D while they were playing against Gamers.nu, saying all those cliche things (like 3D's experience thing, as if Skipper hasn't played for Cosanostra, and the other guys played in SEL). :Þ
Euros and North-Americans can give each other a hard fight, there doesn't seem to be a need for this kind of article bashing a great team...
This could be saved for the "CPL Summer 2004 Aftermatch" article. :)
They were so nice....
I dont see anyone b!itching at the sweeds every time one of there posters come in and say SWEEDS ARE #1. when that happens we usualy just giggle and say good for you in a polite way. the fact is, most of you anal rentitive "i hate the usa" bandwaggoners are hypocrites. we all usualy think its funny when the brazilians come in and say MIBR is #1, but ones the bias against the US is shown if any one dare sais rival is the best team in the states, OMG OMG FAT AMERICAN PIG OMG OMG. if i EVER see another sk doiminance artical, im gonna flame the hell out of it and europe and then will see who still has double standards. rivalrys are fun (no pun intended) and for all of you to keep b!tching about the usa vs. europe rivalry, get a f|_|cking life and take your prozac, its all in good fun.
HAy INKYBEAR AND KRTBEAR (grr raMOB)
Of some reason NoA seem weaker now after they had cut bsl for destructo and element. I do not even know if they can be ranked top8 after this cpl.
