Counter-Strike: g3x Post CPL Interview

5th place g3nerationX's captain Alexandre 'Gaules' Chiqueta answers the questions we all wanna hear about after their great performance at CPL Winter 2005.

Well, congratulations to you and your team. You really proved a point today and you kept your promises from our first interview!

Thanks!! After we were unable to show good results at WCG, we practiced as hard as we could in Brazil and we came to Los Angeles one week prior to the CPL event. In LA we could practice with lots of local teams and we had lots of talking and started very soon to focus on CPL. When we first arrived at CPL we went practicing at the BYOC and we were able to fix a couple of things in our team and I think we improved a lot. As I said in our past interview, a top5 in such a high level tournament is everybody's dream, we had a little help in the brackets and we were able to play just fine in the decisive matches, I mean, we were in the lower bracket and started to win match by match and when you eliminate teams such as EG and 4K you get confident for the next matches.

G3nerationX finally shown its real potential to us. Where did that impressive style of play come from?

When a team has the chance to get to a tournament like that, where the best teams in the world come to represent not only its team but also its country, it gets to a much more serious point. At the moment we started practicing for this tournament we got to work on the details and with the days passing by we were able to find not only our weak points but our strengths against the other teams. We are very close as a group; the five of us and only the joy of being able to play at this level helps a lot with the hard times. We are a team that learned a lot on how to deal with victories and a lot more with our defeats. To represent your country in pretty much everything requires a lot of discipline and I think we understand that today we are five friends who travels together and try to do our best. We like a lot to be close each to other, sharing the good moments and day by day we can be friends and high level professionals and I think that helps our team. Usually, as the captain, I dont let the guys check news sites or forums during tournaments because sometimes there are people that dont understand that when you are out of the country playing under their own flag you have to find confidence and support. This time I ended up reading so many good comments that for each game we won in the lower bracket I showed those messages to the guys and we started to understand how important each game was for the people back there at home. Its hard to know that there are thousands of people looking at you during the game, and a second can represent a great victory or a huge loss for the team and for the people who trusts us. I try to show to each player that we arent just five guys but all the people that are rooting for us on the websites, IRC, etc, and every win by us results in joy for those people. In this tournament all those people had a great part in our good result.

Right after your first match against 4Dimensions, g3x suffered a scare in the match against Mousesports, what happened?

Against mouz we had great expectations. Lots of people here talked about how great mouz is on cobble but we knew we could play them at the same level. We didn't have many T sided tactics so we focused on practicing it at the BYOC. When the match first started and we were CTs we had our confidence at a very high level but unfortunately we committed a huge mistake and lost a 3x1 situation in the pistol rounds. That one round not only brought us down but gave them the momentum needed. By the time we noticed we were down 7-0 and they knew how to take advantage and close the half in 10-5. The second half started and we were able to get to 7-1, and in the 9th round when we had the game in our hands. I committed a mistake and me and Crash lost an important round on a 2-2 situation, and again we felt really bad and it took away the momentum. Doesn't matter if it keeps us out of focus for only 2 minutes, thats enough to lose the next couple of rounds, and we end up losing the match.

Unfortunately that kind of stuff happens, you guys are allowed to commit mistakes too.

Sometimes its hard to be the captain of a team such as g3x. You have to know that you are there not only to play but to command and sometimes I really don't care with my frags or stuff like that, because I know in the team my role is to give the max of instructions during a round, and I know that if I try something risky it might result in myself getting killed and that can hurt the team. I don't care if I don't get kills as long as I see that our strat comes out fine and we get the win. That makes me a lot happier than a great deal of frags, certainly.

In the lower bracket you guys certainly shown that you deserve to be respected by easily taking down teams such as eSrael, CheckSix, Team EG, and the team that sent Serious, Astralis, mTw and Team 3D packing, 4Kings, in one of the most brilliant performances in this CPL Winter 2005. Can you talk a little about those matches?

The match against eSrael was nice, we started with good rounds as CTs and in a few moments we ended up losing couple of rounds and finished first half with a 11-4. When the second half started we again committed a mistake in the pistol round and left Aliche alone in a 1-2 situation, but we had confidence in him (specially if hes got a USP) and he easily took down both guys. From then on we made only a single mistake in the first gun round and after that we closed the match.

Against CheckSix we knew it would be a hard one specially because it was on mill and we didnt have much preparation for it. We started as Ts and we were able to finish first half with a great 11-4. Second half started and we had the luck of elll making a great round by winning another 1-2 situation in the pistol round and that gave us a 14-4 advantage, after that we lost a few gun rounds but we were able to fix that and close the match 16-9.

After we won against CheckSix we were very confident and we knew we had great tactics and skill on Train. Its really good to play a team that you know doesn't usually watch your demos and know your tactics, so we started using all our tactics without worries and it worked just fine. We committed mistakes during a couple of rounds but it was secured. That was a match that every single player did their job, specially Crash playing a great match and always getting kills with the awp. We closed first half 12-3 and closed the game 16-3 after that.

For the next match we had to play 4Kings on Dust2, a map that we really practiced hard and again we had a good conversation about it and went to warm up. I think that the great advantage we got was the knowledge we had of their team and tactics. I watch them play very often and I end up learning their positions. Also, in Brazil we play a very different style of play than in Europe, a lot more aggressive. They are not used to a speed rush with lots of flashes and small machine guns but with the slow style of play. By knowing that we were able to focus on those speed tactics we started rushing A and it worked round after round. We started mixing tactics and playing very aggressively and it resulted in more and more confidence and we were able to close it 16-1.

After several perfect matches you guys got to play an American team on its home turf. Next match was against the impressive Jax Money Crew on Cpl Mill, what happened in this match?

I myself think Its ridiculous of CPL's part to always put maps like mill or fire in such decisive moments of the tournament. They forbid other tournaments from using the maps and in the whole world only CPL events (like CAL) can use it. It was very frustrating to get to a semi final and know that it doesn't matter how hard we try, we didn't have enough experience and practice on that map to face such a top American team. We covered bomb site A with 4 guys most of the time and even so they rushed A 70% of the time and got a clear entrance with good grenades and shots; they were dominating. Of course we can always say that we could have practiced more or dedicated more time to it, but its natural that an American team will always be one step ahead. Honestly except for couple of rounds, I basically was sitting there waiting for the time to save another round... Its terrible to feel that in such an important match. In another map even if we had lost 16-0 we could know it was cause of our mistakes, but now the doubt remains. Mill only at the next cpl.

Finally after JMC you guys had to play for the 5th place with Begrip, another upcoming giant, and again you guys won with ease, how about that match?

At the beginning we were very upset with the loss on Mill. We talked and we finally had the chance to reach the so desired top5, and how getting there and losing would be another upset, so we put together our strength and went for the win. We knew Begrip are one of the best teams in the world, and an up and coming team coming from a huge win on a important national tournament like WEG. When the match first started we made a few mistakes but were able to fix it and we started to hit the shots and come up big. There was a point we started to do mix stuff like pushing middle, A, B, whatever we wanted to do, we did it, and it worked! When the second half started and we were Ts we immediately remembered our 14-1 against 4Kings and we knew Begrip had a similar style of play so we basicaly used the same tactics and were able to close the match 16-6.

What do you think of this year's CPL? Venue, teams, organization.

Venue - Perfect, Ill give it a 10. The Hyatt has always been the house of worldwide Counter-Strike. Pity it might be the last event in here. Everything in this place smells like CS ! Its an environment that makes you want to play more and more.

Teams - Also 10, never been in a tournament with so many good and quality teams. We had the chance of playing teams of the whole world at the BYOC and improved with each map we played. Its really exciting to get such an event and see that you have everything around to evolve.

Organization - Ill give it an 8. When speaking of timing, CPL always been perfect, you have the right to be there 30 minutes before the match and warm up as much as you want without any pressure. I thought that the judges would be more experienced though. There were times we were left alone and only had to report the final score. As for the map cycle, I was also not happy about CPL maps being put in such decisive parts of the tournament.

Thanks very much Gaules. Again, congratulations on your impressive finish, any final words?

Thanks to you ptlk, and to GotFrag and all the fans in Brazil, once more thank you for supporting us, we love to be here to represent you! And of course I want to thank Intel for making our dreams come true once again. Also I would like to say, this event would have been better if Apoka could come with us, I hope next year he will be able to travel with the team. Thanks.
