Counter-Strike: World Rankings updated for first time in 2006

By: Trevor Schmidt - Published January 19, 2006 at 7:22 AM EST - Writer Archive
CPL is over, but the Counter-Strike scene continues on with another update of the World Rankings. With no major events scheduled for the foreseeable future, many teams will try to continue to develop their rosters in preparation for the World Tour and coming Summer LAN Season.

It has been a while since the rankings have been this decisive, but with two CPL wins in 2005 it seems pretty obvious who the top ranked team in the World is. The Chinese wNv held on to second even without a CPL performance while a fellow Asian team, Lunatic-Hai, jumped up into third with a great CPL event. An epic match against SK.swe kept 3D in the top five, right above team NiP, who continues to hold strong. New face g3x.Intel joined the ranking after a top 5 CPL finish. The Brazilians come in at seventh, just behind Complexity, whose disappointing CPL didn’t overshadow its impressive 2005 year. Three "new look" teams round out the top 10 as fnatic, mouz and Catch Gamer all remake their rosters to start 2006.

3D’s total points remain unchanged, largely due to a stellar performance against the eventual CPL Champion SK.swe. That point total was enough to award them a top spot. coL remains largely unaffected by its poor performance as people wait for Sunman’s return to set in for the team. Below those two are the big moves. Rival’s poor CPL hurt them and forced a drop of two spots. This gave EG and United 5 a boost with u5 closing the gap between themselves and the Canadians by plus 10 points. The new zEx created from the old Check-Six is tied with CPL’s surprise, JMC, who both barely held off a falling GB. JMC’s amazing CPL was again followed by roster shakeups. Voters seem very disappointed the team let certain rising stars get away, especially zid.

Massive roster shakeups dominated the European scene to start the New Year. Still, one rank was to be expected: SK.swe. After that though, things got a whole lot more interesting, as NiP held onto its second spot while the combination team created from fnatic and Begrip members picked up the third spot. This was just ahead of another "new look" team, Catch Gamer. A lot of question marks remain, but everyone seems confident that the above teams haven’t lost ground with their recent transactions. 4Kings, Serious Gaming and mTw.ATI all benefit from solid CPL performances, especially 4Kings with another top 8 finish. NoA’s massive roster shakeup was a clear loser, as their new roster is unproven but the continued appearance of XeqtR keeps them in the top 10.

General Ranking Notes:
1. Sorry, but there aren't any rankings for Australian, Asian or South American regions.
2. International teams do not qualify for North American or European rankings. They are ranked in the World Rankings exclusively. International teams are determined by the organization that runs them and their determination of their home of country of operation.
3. Rankings are voted on by top teams from around the World via an email/point process where each representative ranks the team with the team receiving points based on their individual ranking per representative.
