Counter-Strike: xGames Venezuela: Recap

By: Jorge Jiménez - Published March 06, 2006 at 12:08 AM EST - Writer Archive
During the last week of February, while the Carnivals were happening, the beautiful island of Margarita was host to what was probably the best tournament in the history of Venezuela. The prize money was $3,000, and your #1 eSports resource was there to bring you coverage of the event.

Let me first point out that I wasn't able to bring you live coverage, as an internet connection was not available during the tournament. Other than this slight set-back, things went smoothly.

The following are the 32 Venezuelan teams that participated in the tournament:

1. Mindless
2. Fast Players
4. Deadly Takeover
3. NetSystems Group
5. Ciberatletas Venezuela
6. Loma Dorada
7. Enjoy
8. WhiteShot Aggressive
9. WhiteShot Rebirth
10. Amazing Gamers
11. The Cyber Shop
12. pNg
13. Team RH
14. Team HsD
15. CyberStudio
16. Terror Squad
17. SS Elite
18. Very Important Players
19. Phantom Rox
20. Kill Zone
21. Pussy Cats
22. Vairus
23. Nice To Kill
24. e'Webs
25. Killer
26. LVO
27. Team SBF
28. Bunker Stell
29. Xtreme
30. T[e]
31. Defects
32. Game Fury

After almost half a day spent travelling on a bus from Barquisimeto to Puerto La Cruz, and then spending another six hours on a ship, we (NetSystems Group, CyberStudio and I) arrived in Margarita on Friday the 24th; unfortunately, we arrived without enough time to head to the XGames LAN center, where the tournament would take place the next day.

The tournament had pretty powerfull computers, considering it was a Counter-Strike 1.6 competition. Let's take a look at the specs:

Intel Pentium IV 3.4Ghz
RAM: 1GB DDR
Graphics: ATI Radeon XT850
19" CRT Monitors

and

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice Core
RAM: 1GB DDR
Graphics: GeForce 6800GT
19" CRT Monitors

The ambience at the event was pretty nice; upstairs was the players' room where the matches were taking place, and downstairs was a giant screen where the spectators could watch the matches.

The brackets can be found here.
