Counter-Strike: Midway's Melee WEG Master 2006 Playday 1

By: Trevor Schmidt - Published April 22, 2006 at 5:38 AM EDT - Writer Archive
A long day was filled with ups and downs for four different teams.
SK.swe looked like the team of old for one map, but when the day ended they stood at a record of 0-1. The Swedes were joined by the Russians, Virtus.Pro who also ended the day with a loss. On the positive side, the Chinese wNv and American Complexity both claimed victories.

Player of the Night Ke Fei “Jungle” Yang – Talk about taking over a map. His staggering 1.389 FPR during the second map against SK.swe is hard to even comprehend. You want to know why the #1 team in the World lost 16-2? His name was Jungle, PERIOD.

Top 5 - Performances of the Night
1. coL.fRoD – When it mattered in the first match he was electric and countering the momentum built up by LeX's impressive play.
2. wNv-tK – He was crazy tonight, even if the stats don't show it, coming up with big plays in every situation the Chinese needed.
3. SK|Vilden – If it wasn't for him the match wouldn't have been played; he told SK to play it and they stepped up and took on wNv's request for a computer switch.
4. Virtus.Pro|LeX – His last map was horrible; but he was amazing in the first two maps keeping Virtus in the game.
5. SK|fisker – In a losing effort he was the best player for SK, forget Spawn for today; fisker carried SK at points.

Surprise of the Night: wNv – A comeback that was totally unexpected. The second map was on the level of a compete shock to me. Jungle's performance was legendary but SK's collapse is almost equal to that task. It almost seemed that once Jungle got hot, SK gave up. The distaste we have seen in SK's blogs about China has to make one wonder if they simply just didn't have their hearts in the game.

Stock rising: Complexity – Not a huge shock to see them beat Virtus.Pro, but the Russians had been one of the best teams in the practice room. Complexity had lost to Virtus in their only previous meeting at ACON5. With that monkey off their back, Complexity's match versus NoA tomorrow looks very good. The Americans have to be happy to get NoA in the second match of a double-header for the Norwegians. For Complexity's sake, maybe NoA will be worn out.

Stock falling: SK.swe – Well, now they are against the ropes. If they suffer a loss to 4Kings or Catch Gamer, they should start packing their bags. Still don't jump off that band wagon just yet. We have seen SK lose matches in round robin and come back to play extremely well.
