Counter-Strike: WSVG Lanwar CS Day Three Melee

By: Chris Kennedy - Published June 18, 2006 at 1:08 AM EDT - Writer Archive
Three teams remain in WSVG's first event of the year, with Pandemic looking to go undefeated while 3D and coL face each other for the chance to topple the upper bracket winner.
We have reached the final day of the first event put on by the World Series of Video Games, and it's been quite a tournament. A collection of the USA's best teams have descended on Kentucky's LANwar, and it's highly unlikely that anyone could have predicted the results. The Team 3D/compLexity showdown that most spectators were hoping for will take place, but in an unfamiliar setting: the lower bracket final. We have grown so accustomed to these two titans battling for supremacy that it seems odd to think that when the match is over, the tournament will continue. Pandemic sits atop the mountain right now, in a position that almost nobody saw coming. A nail-biter against 3D in the upper bracket final vaulted them to the top of LANwar, and while they surely wouldn't be disappointed with a second place finish, Pandemic aims to prove to everyone that their early online season spark wasn't just a fluke.

The rest of the final placings are equally surprising. JMC, given the second ESWC slot for the US by the community and eSports experts from all over, struggled throughout the tournament and finished eighth. A then-surprising early loss to Pandemic seemed to leave them reeling, and while they did defeat e7 down the line, this wasn't the same team that dominated the last CSA Intel Challenge. Mug n Mouse placed seventh, just below the 25th-seeded shockwave, who defeated MnM early in a thrilling double OT match. Rounding out the placings so far are u5 in fifth and the major dark horse, Check Six, in fourth place. United5 began the day by dropping compLexity, but would eventually become just one of many Pandemic victims.

Team 3D, after an early scare from x6.us, had little trouble with shockwave before losing the match to Pandemic that appeared to be all but over just over halfway through the second half. Meanwhile, compLexity appears to have taken the loss to u5 in stride, demolishing the teams they faced afterward in route to the matchup with 3D.
