Counter-Strike: Intel Summer Championship seedings preview

By: Mark Cheben - Published July 04, 2006 at 8:56 PM EDT - Writer Archive
WSVG’s Intel Summer Championship is approaching fast and as the third WSVG event a new process of seeding will be implemented.

The seeds for the WSVG’s opening events were performed by a weighted lottery. This placed teams into several seeding groups to obtain relatively fair seedings without any previous series' stops to use as reference. However, now that two series stops have concluded the seeding process will be different this time around.

According to the WSVG’s CounterStrike rules, tour points are awarded to each team based on their finish at WSVG for seeding purposes. The following are how the points are to be awarded:

1st 100 Points
2nd 90 Points
3rd 85 Points
4th 80 Points
5th 75 Points
6th 70 Points
7th 65 Points
8th 60 Points
9th – 12th 56 Points
13th – 16th 52 Points
17th – 24th 48 Points
25th – 32nd 42 Points
33rd – 64th 36 Points
65th – 128th 30 Points

Adding these numbers to the results from the LanWar and Dreamhack WSVG events, the point totals look like the following:

1. Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas 100
2. Sweden fnatic 90
3. Sweden Check Six 85
4. Brazil Made in Brazil 80
5-6. Norway Aftermath 75
5-6. Germany ALTERNATE aTTaX 75
7-8. Norway Catch Gamer 65
7-8. Finland Serious Gaming 65
9-12 Sweden mYm, Sweden SK, Sweden Raw, Sweden lehnitz 56
13-16 Finland Logitech.fi, Norway xlnz, Sweden volt, Sweden Begrip 52

1. United States Team 3D 100
2. United States Pandemic 90
3. United States CompLexity 85
4. United States Check Six 80
5. United States United 5 75
6. United States Shockwave 75
7. United States Mug N Mouse 65
8. United States Jax Money Crew 65
9-12 United States e7, United States h3, United States violence, United States nsa 56
13-16th United States ixl, United States aftershock, United States zak, United States KvM 52

Due to the fact that Dreamhack did not have runoff matches for 5-6 and 7-8, I awarded both teams 7th place points. To make it fair I awarded the 7th and 8th place LanWar winners 7th place points. Then, when combined with the registration list from the Intel Summer Championship and crossing out teams that are not attending (SK, Raw, MiBR, mYm according to fragbite), the seedings for the ISC look like this:

1. United States Team 3D 100
2. Sweden fnatic 90
3. United States Pandemic 90
4. United States CompLexity 85
5. Sweden Check Six Sweden 85
6. United States Check Six 80
7. Germany ALTERNATE aTTaX 75
8. United States United 5 75
9. Norway Catch Gamer 65
10. United States Mug N Mouse 65
11. United States JaX Money Crew 65
12. United States e7 56
13. United States violence 56

WSVG rule 6-2 appears to mean that teams which do not have series points will be entered into a weighted random lottery.

6-2. All tournament seeding will be based on WSVG tour points. Points will be awarded based on performance in WSVG major and minor events. Specific information on the point system for each game may be found in the subsection for that game. Where no points exist, a weighted random lottery will be utilized to determine tournament seeding.

These are the predicted seeding groups for the CS tournament (barring any late signups to the tournament):

High Seed Pool 14-18
United Kingdom 4K
Canada EG
Brazil g3x.Intel
Germany mouz
Norway NoA

Medium Seed Pool 19-22
Sweden chillside
Sweden speedlink
Australia fzer0
Denmark atr.dk

Low Seed Pool 23-26
Canada DZ
United States netfragz
Canada Nameless
United States GB
