Counter-Strike: Official ruling in the Fnatic vs. 4Kings match

By: Jason Baker - Published July 07, 2006 at 9:28 PM EDT - Writer Archive
As if a match that goes into overtime isn’t dramatic enough, 4Kings and Fnatic experienced a long pause worthy of an Oscar nod.
During overtime of the upper bracket round two match between 4Kings and Fnatic, confusion ensued as a few players exchanged good half and good game comments at the end of the 3rd round of overtime. Unlike other tournaments, WSVG uses max round 5 (mr5) for overtime instead of max round 3 (mr3). Unaware of this, players from 4Kings switched sides following the 3rd round of overtime. Their switch came two rounds too early and instigated a half hour pause in the match while the admins decided how to proceed.

Section 5, Clause 7.a.ii of WSVG's official Counter-Strike tournament rules states:
the match will continue into overtime play using the same map used in regular match play. Overtime will consist of 2 halves, each composed of 5 rounds, with each team playing one half as Terrorists and one half as Counter-Terrorists.

When asked about why he switched, 4Kings player commented that overtime has been mr3 since 1999, and he switched out of habit.

The match was to go on with two more rounds of play; that was clear. However the money situation each team would face when the server was unpaused was up for debate by the admins. The official ruling found 4Kings at fault and credit the team with $4,000 which was consistent with their current money situation as the team was fresh off of a buyout in round 3 assuming that the overtime was mr3. Fnatic was credited for $9,000.

Fnatic went on to win the remaining two rounds of the half and the first round of the second overtime to close out the match 21 to 15.
