Counter-Strike: Midway's Melee CGI Wrap-up

Midway gives his tournament awards for DirecTV's Championship Gaming Invitational.
While the Championship Gaming Invitational won’t go down as a test of CS teams, it was a good milestone for gaming. DirecTV took the time to broadcast the games right, I can’t wait to see what they show us in August. I was disappointed that CS didn’t get to show itself off (as well as some of the other games) but after talking to DirecTV, I’ve been assured a commitment to the game. The company sees its potential and popularity, and will work hard to improve it for the future.

MVP of the Tournament: Danny “fRoD” Montaner – His second straight MVP was well earned with a strong second day. fRoD’s top FPR, 1.231, and DAR, 106.8, gave him the best stats in the top two categories. He also led in +/- at +19 and really put down a huge performance in the finals with 21/8 to lead everyone.

Top 5 - Performances of the Tournament
1. 3D|Kim – Only player besides fRoD to post above a 100 DAR for the event.
2. NiP|zet – Really played well but his team didn’t step up putting above average numbers in a tough loss.
3. coL|Storm – Great 25/10 ratio and really like I have always been saying, key to coL’s success.
4. coL|Sunman – Didn’t get the frags but his 90’s DAR was pretty impressive and his flanking in the finals was key.
5. 3D|moto – Nothing outstanding but he did his job and was solid for 3D when they needed him.

Stat Awards
Top Frag Total: coL|fRoD - 32
Top Assist Total: 3D|moto - 6
Top Death Total: 3D|volcano - 23
Highest FPR: coL|fRoD – 1.231
Worst FPR: JMC|exodus – 0.091
Highest DAR: coL|fRoD – 106.8
Worst DAR: JMC|exodus – 18.8
Best +/-: coL|fRoD - +19
Worst +/-: NiP|walle & JMC|exodus - -9

Surprise of the Tournament: Rules – Honestly I was willing to try the rules out and see if they’d work but I didn’t expect this outcome. The amount of lopsided results due to the rules was shocking and hard to predict. Still, lesson learned and I think everyone will be ready to move forward in preparing CS for mainstream TV.

Stock rising: Dead or Alive – The game really proved itself in front of a crowd, and I think it could be a challenger to Counter-Strike and Halo for top spot among the fans heart. The game’s big key is the ease at which people can understand what is going on -- any fan who complains about the changes made to CS should take note. CS will be hurt badly by its complex nature unless the community finds ways to make it easier for a fan to get into it.

Stock falling: 3D/Catch Gamer – Actually this is a joke, after all of the complaining after I didn’t put Catch-Gamer in the ISC stock falling wrap-up I figured its time to make the community happy. Honestly Catch Gamer is hurting after losing OoPs, one of their best players, but 3D is still a great shape for WCG. Talking to tr1p after the DirecTV event; coL is hungry to beat 3D at WCG USA. That’ll be EXTREMELY interesting.
