Counter-Strike: Interview with wNv alex

By: BO WANG - Published August 15, 2006 at 3:50 AM EDT - Writer Archive
wNv.gm has advanced to the grand final of wcg China qualifier by defeating team Newlife. Team Newlife nearly made a successful comeback, but a flash bug used by them in the 30th round crushed the last remaining hope.

Congratulations on your victory, how do you feel now?

It is great that wNv.gm is going to represent China in WCG Italy 2006. Although we've won the qualifier, we are not completely satisfied with our performance, especially our teamwork. I think we need more time to play together; there is still a lot of work to do before WCG Italy.

Which team (teams) do you think was the biggest challenge for wNv.gm so far?

It was Star.ex and Newlife that gave us the biggest challenge so far. In the match against Star.ex, we only took 5 rounds as T on de_inferno (5:10); in the second half, we made a great comeback while Star.ex was having 5 match points in a row, and then we fought tooth and nail to defeat them after two tie-breakers. As for team Newlife, if they had not made a mistake in the final of winner bracket, we would have played more tie-breakers.

It is the second international event for the reshuffled wNv.gm after WGT China few days ago, have you guys built an efficient team yet?

Not yet. After all we have only practiced together for about 15 days; there are many things that we even have not brought to the same level we achieved before. We need to spend at least one more month to build the team play in perfect harmony. At the moment the matches we played are rather based on individual capability than teamwork.

As the captain of wNv.gm, have you noticed any difference in the team after it reshuffled?

Aqi and bigun’s join have brought in new blood and fresh ideas, especially their deep yearning for victory, which is what we urgently needed to have in the team, furthermore their have equalized the individual ability in the team. The biggest disadvantage is that we need time to practice our team work, and we need to spend time to redo something all over again with the new members.

Recently wNv has established its European Counter-Strike team (wNv.eu), what do you think of this expansion?

Well, it is the first step for wNv’s internationalization. The establishment of wNv.eu will definitely enable wNv.gm and wNv.cn to have more chance to widely communicate with teams in Europe. Meanwhile more and more European friends will pay attention to the eSports in China as well as the development of wNv-Gaming. I hope that wNv.gm, wNv.cn and wNv.eu can be improved simultaneously by mutual study.

Many people think that the exchange of players between wNv.gm and wNv.cn has strengthened wNv.gm and weakened wNv.cn, what is your opinion on it?

In my opinion, those who have this kind of feeling about the exchange of players probably do not know wNv very well. wNv has the 10 top Counter-Strike players in China, if we are given enough time, any kind of combination of any 5 five players of us could be able to contend for hegemony in China. - Alex
Some people think that the creation of wNv.eu could bring about a mixed play style of European ways and Chinese manners into both wNv Chinese teams and the European team. What do you think?

I hope that wNv.eu and the wNv Chinese teams can embrace each others advantage, so we can really help each other a lot. This will be very helpful for the improvement of all of us.

Some people are curious about why you changed your nick from 44’alex to alex after ESWC Paris, can you explain it for us?

After the disastrous loss in ESWC Paris, it is time to forget about our world champion title, and to do everything from scratch. I really want to try something new, including my nick of course.

The loss in ESWC Paris has cast a shadow over your life as a professional player. Now we are glad to see that you have walked out of the shadow, can you tell us how you adjusted yourself to such a difficult situation?

Yes I suffered a lot of difficulties after the loss in ESWC Paris 2006, however I know that my goals have not been reached yet, I want to win more championships for China as well as wNv-Gaming. Therefore I can not give up!

wNv.gm and wNv.eu are going to attend WGT grand finals, if you met your European teammates, what would you most like to say?

I will say “very happy to meet you here, and wish us to meet again in the Grand Final!”

Any more words for our readers?

Thank you for the interview. Thanks to our sponsors: Intel, ATI, Kappa, Softtrading, Ideazon, TCL, NiceZ.com, and Esports in China. Thank those who have been supporting us all along. I want to tell my girlfriend who is studying in South Korea that I love her so much.
