Counter-Strike: WEG2 Match Day 3 Predictions

By: Stuart Brooks - Published June 11, 2005 at 5:52 AM EDT - Writer Archive
Stuart Brooks, live from WEG2 in Korea, brings us his predicitions for today's week2 matches. Stay tuned to GotFrag (particularly "brooks") as he shares with us his experiences in Korea. Well with two teams already going home after some intense matches in the win or go home situation, two more teams are up on the chopping block for tomorrow's matches.

Well with two teams already going home after some intense matches in the win or go home situation, two more teams are up on the chopping block for tomorrow's matches.

Stuart Brook's WEG2 Predicitions

Catch-Gamer
(0-0-0)

vs.

GamerCo
(1-0-0)

GamerCo and Catch are both sitting at 1-0 in their division. Whoever wins this match will take home the top spot in Group A. GamerCo rallied back after an early deficit against Project on dust2, but GamerCo showed poise under pressure and really made some great calls on their Terrorist side. I would consider de_nuke to be GamerCo's bread and butter map, as they have had great success on it at CPL and ESWC USA against top competition. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see GamerCo take this match by a lot. Nuke fits their type of playing style very well, allowing their superb aim to take charge and never relinquish the lead. Catch-Gamer had a much closer match than people expected from the Korean team, Project. Catch did show some perseverence in their match, after losing a save round in the second half that extended their match by quite a few rounds. It will be interesting to see how well Catch matches up against GamerCo. They will need to win their T side pistol if they want to stand a chance against GamerCo's 'lockdown' CT side.

GamerCo > Catch-Gamer 13-7 on de_nuke

mTw
(0-1-0)

vs.

Astralis
(1-0-0)

Astralis showed some weakness on their CT side today against AbitStrike, but they more than made up for it on T side. After starting out sluggish, losing their CT pistol round, they won 6 straight rounds only to lose the last 3 after some great play by Abit. The thing that impressed me about Astralis was that they KNEW they could get 7 rounds on the normally very hard Terrorist side on nuke. I think Dust2 will suit their style of play very well and will continue to look very good on T side. mTw had a hard time against Abit on inferno last week, but I do know that they have been practicing quite a bit to make sure they aren't joining NoA or Project on a flight home early. Dust2 is a very open map and can go either way. If mTw can get out to a lead fast and early, they might be able to make this a very close match. One has to wonder how the team might be playing if they didn't have to make a roster change 2 days before WEG2.

Astralis > mTw 13-9 on de_dust2

Team EG
(0-1-0)

vs.

4kings
(1-0-0)

4Kings really showed dominance today against Pentagram on dust2. Almost everything they did was perfectly executed and each player chipped in frags to really make that match a team effort. I expect some huge frags from anyone on 4K. Each player has the ability and talent to come up big for their team. Red and the Scottish awping machine, aK, really impressed me with their play against Pentagram. I think it will be hard to go anywhere against them on CT side, let alone play against them on T side. Depending on which side they start out on, this match could be over very quickly. The thing that I love about Team EG is that they are such nice guys. They got a bad situation in their nuke match, but you haven't heard them blaming anyone or whining about what happened. They are real class acts and great players. I honestly think they could have won the match against Pentagram and they would be in an entirely different situation right now. It's win or go home for these players from the Great White North. Team EG has steadily improved over the months and you can really tell from how they have been playing in practice. I'm not sure if it will be enough to take this match against a dominating 4K. Good luck guys.

4Kings > Team EG 13-6 on de_inferno

Begrip
(1-0-0)

vs.

wNv
(1-0-0)

This is probably the best match up for today. Both teams had their way with NoA. One in a nail-biter and the other in a more dominating fashion. Both of these teams are highly skilled and have the will to win. Begrip has been playing very well not only in their matches and practice at WEG, but before they left for WEG. They came prepared and it really shows. I know the guys celebrated f0rest's 17th birthday last night, so they should be well rested for Sunday's key matchup. They already know they are moving on to the next round, but I don't think they will settle for anything less than a group win. Expect great teamplay and solid fragging from everyone on Begrip. They might have some superstars on their team, but they play together very well as a cohesive unit. wNv definitely surprised a few people by taking out the defending champion NoA. They showed a lot in-game prowess, choosing what spot to stack correctly and what rounds they wanted to boost players at the right moment. With guessing ability like that, wNv could be very scary on any round, especially save rounds as they showed they have very good aim. It will be interesting to see how well Begrip and wNv play each other, as whoever wins this match, wins the group. I know I am waiting in anticipation for this game.

Begrip > wNv 13-11

The tournament really has been tough on EG. Its a shame, theyre a team that obviously has the potential to be great, as they once were, they just need the playing time to improve - like 4K and mouz had last season. Unless they pull off something massive, I cant see that happening :/

GL all.

They have improved - that's the problem. This was going to be their chance. And with that terrible ruling, combined with the fact that rounds WILL matter, they basically had their chance of winning at all taken away on their second Round of the tournament.

It's a shame really.

4k 13/2
penta 15/17
eg 4/13

so if eg wins even 13-11

4k 24/13
EG 17/24
penta 15/17

they would have more rounds won but i saw it posted on another thread that the +/- is what counts. if that's true...

4k +11
penta -2
eg -9

eg needs at least a 7 round diff to tie the ratio i.e. 13-6 which would make a tie in ratios (and maybe go to rounds won?), so they should probably look to win at least 13-5 to remove all doubt ( i think keemo said this elsewhere, but now it's here I GAVE CREDIT)

i'd like to think they could pull it off, but after what 4k did to penta... :\

once 4K won the needed 8 rounds there was no way they could not win the group. so they stopped using their good tactics so not to be predictable in their later games of this tournement
