Counter-Strike: JMC throws CEVO match, CEVO responds

By: hyeng kim - Published December 04, 2006 at 2:49 PM EST - Writer Archive
JMC was scheduled to play a Cyber Square Alliance match and a CEVO-P lower consolation finals match at the same time on Sunday.
JaX Money Crew played both matches but threw away their CEVO playoffs match so that they could play their CSA match on time. They ran out at 3D with their knives out and lost the match quickly, 16-0. The reason why is that if a CEVO-P team forfeits any matches in the CEVO playoffs, they also forfeit their earnings from the regular season.

Although JMC retained the $1250 they earned during the regular season, they lost their chance at part of the $10000 pot for the top three finishers in the CEVO playoffs. In return, they retained their chance to win their $1500 for their first place finish at 2006 Intel CS 1.6 Core 2 Extreme Challenge. JMC would have had to play 3D, United 5, and Pandemic to make a run at the CEVO playoffs, or play Flow Gaming, eMazing Gaming, Desire 2 Excel, and Come Get a Taste to win the CSA event.

CEVO posted notices of their playoff schedule a month ago and setup their schedule so it would not interfere with any of the major LAN events. JaX Money Crew asked to postpone the match earlier in the day, but CEVO would not allow it; teams were expected to show up and play all their matches for the CEVO-P playoffs. To CEVO, their playoffs were a bigger event than the CSA event. Also, the CEVO playoffs were a big event in their own right, and the teams were told the schedule ahead of time. Another CEVO-P team, United 5, was participating in both events, and elected to prioritize the CEVO playoffs ahead of the CSA event.

CEVO|Plitt stated that in spite of the poor showing of professionalism, JMC would be paid for fulfilling their obligation to show up for the match. He also stated that CEVO would be looking into disciplinary measures regarding the match. This is the first time a team had thrown a CEVO match because of the prize money at stake. The CEVO organization as a whole was disappointed at the poor showing of JMC.

CEVO weren't the only ones disappointed with JMC. Complexity’s owner, Jason Lake, who's team lost to JMC earlier in the playoffs had the following to say:

“JMC beat us fair and square. They outplayed us and got the win. However, antics like this directly affect the legitimacy of the sport we're all working so hard to build. It was an ill-advised decision that has an impact that reaches far beyond one event. It's an unfortunate situation that I am sure CEVO will address in the near future.”

UPDATE:
Alex "JaX" Conroy, owner and manager of JMC, has posted a statement on JMC's webpage regarding this situation.

All organizations share some fault in the situation and in the end it comes back to the fans whose interest everyone was trying to keep in mind. We should not have double booked tournaments this weekend; however we wanted to get as much practice for Winter CPL as possible. We also felt the weekend would be a positive one for fans of JMC as the team would be competing in two events. Both CSA and Cevo did not want to re-schedule their matches because of fans tuning in to see them. This is understandable however we felt our thirty minute postponement was not unreasonable especially due to the fact the United 5 match was postponed far beyond that time.
