Valve has just confirmed in a interview with CS-Nation.net that advertisements will be inserted in Counter-Strike 1.6 in the near future, something that will not be optional, as Valve stressed.

Taking Google as an example, Valve explains that the advertisement system will contribute to the development of the gaming industry in ways never seen before. These ads will begin in Counter-Strike 1.6 because "the main attraction for potential advertisers is the audience size" of this game.

Although the launch date for the advertisement system is still unknown, Doug Lombardi, Marketing Director in Valve, confirmed that all players "can expect to start seeing them [advertisements] appear early next year."

Anyone interested in advertising in the game will be able to do it. "IGA will be the company selling the advertising space", and whoever wants to advertise, has only to contact that company.

Valve plans on placing ads in several different places. There will be advertisements put in the game maps, scoreboard screens and the letterboxed area in the Spectator mode.

Along with this announcement, Lombardi revealed that some changes may come to Counter-Strike:Source. Valve plans on introducing a new pricing system, making changes in weapons (mainly pistols) and introducing "new voice chat features which will eventually apply to both versions of the game."

I hate valve, its been 3 years since 1.6 was released and they don't take the time to fix flashbugs, or make VAC actually work, but the first thing they decide is to put ads in the game!? Valve you truly do hate counter-strike players.

I'm saying this with not knowing how they will implement the ad's, but I dont really mind as long as it doesnt change anything to do with registry / frames per second for the many people that have lower end computers.

So will the ads only be images, banners, etc. on the maps/scoreboard or will it go to something worse where they'll have it so you click an image and you'll be led to a website/link?

It won't be that bad. They will im sure make certain that it does not interfere with gameplay and if at all what it does is give the gaming community more publicity.

Pretty sure it will be ads that gamers can relate to in general... You're not gonna see kmart or wallmart ads tbh. It will be computer stuff or servers or energy drinks imo.

taken from the esau forums, what if the ingame advertising features adverts by a different company to the one sponsoring the event.

I wouldn't have a problem with them putting ads into 1.6 if they were more attentive to it with regard to anti-cheat and other additions. Granted, many of us would take it as a turn for the worse (i.e. the AWP delay that so many people were complaining about, and remember that time they changed the headshot icon?) but it would at least show that they still cared about the game. Valve has effectively shoved aside 1.6 as an unwanted child, but now they finally recognize its marketing power.

Maybe they're taking an approach similar to Blizzard's Starcraft (It's fine as it is, we shouldn't mess with it). It just doesn't make sense why they're trying to cash in on 1.6 now, but like they said, 1.6 is just a test or a model before they place ads in other games.

im speechless.......wow is all i can say. i really wish valve wouldnt have done this but at this point all im hoping for is that none of the ad's will be displayed in the maps(like those floating ad's you see in some servers) as long as it's just on menus and scoreboards i will deal with it but i wont like it.

i cant believe that, i hold tab down for more than half a match. i really dont wanna have ads to stair at.

Doug Lombardi: The current plan is to put ads in a few different places. There will be some ads posted on walls in the game world, an ad on the scoreboard screen, and one in the letterboxed area of Spectator mode.

dude seriously like who gives its jus ads go cry a river n get over it like the worse it can happen is a col vs 3d match and its a 1v1 frod vs rambo and frod loses cuz he was starin at a ad in the wall.
