Counter-Strike: compLexity parts with tr1p, sunman

By: Mark Cheben - Published January 06, 2007 at 12:42 AM EST - Writer Archive
Complexity parts ways with Corey “tr1p” Dodd and Justin “sunman” Summy.

Long time Complexity members Corey “tr1p” Dodd and Justin “sunman” Summy have been released from Complexity. Dodd had been a member of coL for approximately two and a half years after joining the fledgling team in August of 2004. Summy joined slightly later in January of 2005 to take the place of Sean “Bullseye” Morgan and was with Complexity for two years minus his three month hiatus after ESWC 2005.

Summy was “cut” from the team in 2005 shortly after the team won ESWC due to other obligations that prevented him from committing to the team’s strict practice regime. He later rejoined and helped coL achieve a second place at WEG Masters and a win at WSVG’s Intel Summer Championship. Jason Lake, owner of Complexity, explained that Summy was just not the same player he was back in 2005.

“I'm not really sure if it was an issue of dedication or of lapsing talent, but as much as I care about Justin I can safely say he hasn't been the Sunman of July 2005 since he re-joined,” said Lake. “He is an incredibly talented player who can hang with the best of the best, but at this time I felt it was in our best interests to move in another direction.”

Dodd’s release is different. After singing his praises, Lake expressed that he is willing to do whatever it takes to field the best five players possible.

“Corey is truly one of the best Counter-Strike minds to have ever touched the game,” said Lake. “He is an amazing player whose ability to read the opposing team AND clutch in-game is going to go down as legend. Releasing him was very difficult, and he will be missed. However, as I have said, I will do whatever I need to do in order to field the strongest five players possible.”

This ends one of Counter Strike’s longest running rosters which kept the same five players for just under two years and the core four for two and a half years.

“Changing what is perhaps the most consistent roster in CS history is very difficult. Changing a roster made up of friends that have become like family is even more difficult,” said Lake. “However, at the end of the day The Syndicate will do whatever we have to do in order to bring our loyal fans the championships they deserve.”

Looking to the future it is clear that Lake has his cards in hand. According to him it is the best deck the US has ever seen.

“An owner is constantly looking at a "deck of cards," meaning you have to find the best combination of top talent that is available and ready to commit to your organization,” said Lake. “Although I have nothing but great things to say about Corey and Justin, our new five is going to be the best "deck" I could assemble- perhaps the best "deck" ever assembled in U.S. history.”

This is how they will lose all of the events they attend, lose in all leagues, and lose their sponsors. Plus some of the other team members are probably not to happy about losing 2 players like that especially tr1p. GG.

sunman i can see, but what was wrong with tr1p? i cant say ive spectated in alot of coLs matches, so i dont know if it was because he wasnt putting up big enough numbers, but tr1p always seemed like a valuable player to coL...interesting

Tr1p's release is uncalled for and a made mistake!! I think he's the reason why complexity had success with his clutch style and strat calling!!

i think sunman will retire or at least stop playing professionally while maybe getting on a team with some friends or perhaps has a 6th man, etc.. but tr1p is the real story here, obviously. itll be very interesting to see what top team picks up Corey and how they incorporate him in their lineup.

also.. where are the replacements going to come from? jason lake doesnt strike me as the type to give two unknowns a chance, even if they happened to be amazing, so obviously theyre going to have to be taken away from somebody somewhere.

this move is going to considerably shakeup the N.A. pro scene.. possibly affecting anywhere from 2-5 teams. i, for one, welcome it because the scene has become rather stagnant as of late.

I'm sure the other players are not happy, I wonder if frod would go to 3d if they offer him the right amount of money. And trip could go to zex and they could get rid of cbz who cannot call strats and get a positive ratio in one single match at the same time.

Hmmm new COL > new SK or new SK > new COL. It has to be 2 very good players.

#27 you never where true fans don't switch based on lineups or results

Let's start the guessing. Vilden, Fisker, and Goodfella move to the US. COL gets a 6 man lineup.

This really sheds light on the fact that coL is just out there to collect good players. Rather than willing to work with what they have and form a better team. "It's not the card's you're dealt, it's how you play them". Teams like NiP and 3D are ideal examples of a group of guys who work hard to maintain a bond. Whilst teams like Complexity cut members as soon as they are doing bad.
Just my 2 cents.

Its sounds silly but you guys are making "strats" seem WAY more important than they really are. If he can pick up 2 players that are more skilled than both sunman and tr1p, then coL will become a much stronger team. Skill > Strats these days. Mainly because all teams have good strats to begin with.
