Counter-Strike: fnatic cleans up World Rankings update

By: Trevor Schmidt - Published January 23, 2007 at 6:35 AM EST - Writer Archive
After dominating CPL Winter, it seemed natural that fnatic would do the same to the World Rankings. Still the rest wouldn’t be so obvious including how the American's would fare.

fnatic’s clear cut CPL Winter victory following their solid third place finish at WSVG Finals made them the top team by almost all voters. The only hold out was Pentagram who has shown amazing consistency with two wins this year and solid performances in almost every event. Below that was the second place CPL Winter team MYM and WSVG winner aTTax. The surprise of both WSVG and CPL was Hacker.GM and they were rewarded with a 5th place. Lower down in the rankings Complexity represented the only American team while new look mouz was given a 9th ranking.

The American scene is in turmoil with the moves to Source. The reaction in the ranking hasn’t really been felt yet as there really isn’t a way to judge what’s left of 1.6 or what’s new to Source. Only time will tell but the past shows that Complexity is still the top team from 2006. Followed behind is Pandemic who seems to be given the benefit of the doubt with voters as they stuck with 1.6. 3D’s massive roster change, lose of Rambo and move to Source didn’t seem to be a positive combination for the team. JMC as the top placer at CPL didn’t get a lot of credit from the voters. They did move above EG though while the rest of the rankings remained very similar.

fnatic also claimed the top spot in Europe following the victory in the USA for CPL Winter. Pentagram and MYM followed close behind as aTTax and 69N-28E held off a surging mousesports on the back of a very solid team on paper. SK.swe also saw a rise in their stock due to a new roster while NiP dropped on speculation their roster won’t be good enough to hang. At the bottom, surprise French team from CPL Winter, aAa earned the 9th spot while NoA gave Denmark a face on the EU ranking.

Hacker.GM took full advantage of Star.ex not attending CPL Winter to turn its USA tour into a roaring success. After upsetting a few top teams in New York for WSVG Finals, they then went to Dallas where they put on a show placing as the highest Asian team. Project_kr was a step behind at CPL Winter and now in the ranking. Star.ex could have been a bigger story then Hacker.GM but never took the journey. XcN still holds onto the 5th spot as wNv.cn was a total bust at WSVG.
