Counter-Strike: GameGune locks out Fragbite?

By: Jonas Alsaker Vikan - Published July 20, 2007 at 3:01 AM EDT - Writer Archive
Fragbite has been prevented from attending GameGune as press. At issue is their publication of information which GameGune did not release. Look inside to read what Jonas "BSL" Alsaker Vikan thinks of it all.

Editor's note: The following article is solely the opinion of the author and in no way reflects the opinion of GotFrag.com or its parent company, Major League Gaming.

Unwelcome to the show?

[20:28:06] (rC-XFi|JukiChan) i am the Gamegune Head Organizer

The logs of the Fragbite employee and Gamegune head organizer should have made their way through the wires now. In case you missed it the conversation can be read here.

I'm Norwegian. By cultural and historic obligation it means that I have to disagree with a Swedish citizen on all accounts, just as a matter of general principal. However,

[20:28:59] (rC-XFi|JukiChan) according to the press regulations in Europe

…this is ten percent dumb, twenty percent ignorant, fifteen percent tragic and five percent unbelievable.

[20:32:05] (rC-XFi|JukiChan) it could also be considered as violation of a company's privacy or as spying

It's fifty percent backwards and a hundred percent reason to forget their name.

[20:33:43] (rC-XFi|JukiChan) you will get to know from our lawyer

Is this how we do business now? You won't believe the things that come out of this kid's mouth. Edge out the few outlets that put money into covering events with film, photo and print journalism for the benefit of every fan out there that has an internet connection?

By way of the politics they have chosen, Gamegune has made itself out as a giant piñata for the community behind the biggest online game in the world. Congratulations and salutations.

While on the subject of "press regulations in Europe", let’s explore the subject for a few paragraphs.

Europe is a conglomerate of independent, democratic nations (save Belarus), many of which are part of the European Union. The continent also includes Spain. In short, the European Union is working for the free flow of the European workforce between the countries for the good of everyone; herein lays also a policy of the free flow of information. We have freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

According to Jon C. Cubas Díaz, rC-XFi|JukiChan, Gamegune reserves the right to chose their media partners and Meetyourmakers.com has obviously been able to retain exclusive rights to cover the event in Bilbao July 21st. While I would never consider doing an event with a partner that's exclusive to the point that other outlets will not get access to the press area, it is really Gamegune’s prerogative. Here comes the big but, you ready Gamegune?

You can not in your right mind try to threaten, intimidate or otherwise leverage other outlets out of covering something that there is a public interest in, least of all by citing ridiculous definitions of press regulations that do not exist in the Kingdom of Spain. Or anywhere outside the totalitarian states of our world, for that matter.

The sordid attempt at controlling their own press laid out in the logs with Fragbite is probably the most stupid thing I have seen in eSports in eight years and that's saying a lot. But then again:

[20:33:18] (rC-XFi|JukiChan) i am afraid you do not realize what you are talking about

This author is not sure where this leaves the MYM organization. Did they actively participate in outlining these policies?

Why would this be the independent brainchild of a tournament organizer? Especially one that just brokered a deal on the exclusive rights to press coverage?

It would instantly seem like a smart move. It isn't though and here is one of the reasons why: The coverage of different events throughout the world is only as good as the competition for good stories, pictures and video. By having different outlooks and different e-media outlets present it creates a competitive environment. Not unlike the matches themselves.

The competition drives the quality of the coverage upwards, and by ousting all others MYM gets unpopular within the community as well as the organization put a ton of pressure on themselves and the quality of their efforts.

It's ultimately bad for business and a move one would expect from the likes of CPL during their early years. Call me naïve but this should be 2007.

Representatives from Meet Your Makers were offered a chance to comment on the issues in this column but refused to do so.

Editor-in-Chief at Gotfrag.com, Mark "JESUIT" Cheben, estimates that the site cashes out upwards of $60,000 USD a year to cover events. A minimum of the coverage gets primed.

According to a rough estimate by Filip "flpee" Hansen, co-founder of Fragbite.se, the Swedish site has spent some 70 – 100 000 dollars to cover 25 plus events world-wide in its history.

Without asking for a dime in return from their users.

This is really sad. Fragbite is one of the most importants website which deals with eSports and banning them is stupid. This organizer looks pretty dumb and not professional at all. And, by the way, giving to only one website the access to the event is just a really bad choice as far as advertising is concerned.

this is absolutely horrible and pathetic. i seriously doubt there will be another tournament held by this organizer in the future. i feel really sorry for MYM, who is caught in the middle of this thanks to a "rC-XFi|JukiChan" and his idiocy. Unfortunately, though true, MYM is most likely going to be the one that's going to take one for the team. MYM's coverage, no offense, is simply sub-par compared to FragBite, and it will show after this tournament is over. Lots of coverage is going to be missed thanks to GameGune's organizer, and I wouldn't be surprised if most of the coverage was hovered around the MYM.cs team. Pathetic.

The only way they have a basis for their argument is if fragbite signed an NDA agreement with GameGune to not disclose unreleased information. Judging from the logs and the article, there was no such agreement.

Okay you can all stop bashing MYM now. As Jonas said, we are in the middle of this. We want to provide the best coverage possible, but this particular situation is not under our control. Don't make this into a anti-MYM thread =)

excellent read (as usual) and extremely bad move from the organizing committee.

If they want to have a specific site as media partner, then fine but let other media be there and have normal media access and not partner media access or something like that.

The whole idea is kinda stupid and they way it's justified....is priceless...

I know how you feel bsl, and Fragbite. As the spanish press, we couldn't attend GG too due 'the MYM coverage rights'.

It's a bit sad, but there's nothing we can do. It's their rules, and we should respect them.

I can´t really understand. As I know all press are allowed at the event. It´s just that only a few sites or maybe MYM that´s allowed in the players area. And what´s different with Gamegune and other events. Just think about writers from 50 sites running around in a players area. Completely impossible to have it like that. So what´s different at gamegune and other events MYM is just official coverage partner. And Gamegune even have a pressarea for gamingsites.

if you care to read up all informations given so far you will come to the conclusion it's simply pathetic.
only MYM is allowed to the players/press area since they are the "official partner", that's fine.
all other sites like fragbite, readmore, gotfrag are welcome to the event and free to go wherever they want, except for the mentioned place. it's like that for years when it comes to eSports and has been handled so on several events before. what's the big deal?

#23, #26

The controversy is about MYM having been given complete exclusivity with not only access to the tournament area but also the rights to take pictures, film and simply be accomodated as press. You can read that clearly in the IRC log.

Also, GameGune's threat of suing, banning teams, and just the fact that the whole conflict is ignited by Fragbite reporting on news that is not from an official release (which is perfectly normal) makes it quite absurd.

Thankfully, last word is that there seems to have been changes in the photography and filming exclusivity.

MYM has, just like countless other pages for other events, gotten the official coverage rights for the GameGune event. That does not include exclusivity, as there is a press area at the event where currently websites like hltv.org are covering it.

The players area is not closed, and people are not hindered to enter until a certain degree. The Fragbite controversy is between GameGune and Fragbite, and MYM has no doing in it as it is not directly our business. Fragbite has acted against the wishes of GameGune by publishing some information before the tournament organisers were giving the information free and for that GameGune has refused Fragbite to enter the press area which they have all rights to in my world.

I would also like to question the phrases about investment of money and doing it for free. Websites invest money into events to build up their brands, to get more visitors and to strengthen their market value and sell more ads. There is no such thing as 'for free' in the business world and I find it questionable that this has been brought up in the way it was brought up by the writer.

im not so sure i totally understand what happened here:

fragbite is being banned because they didnt immediately apologize and remove the content from their site?

only mym is allowed to take video and photos while all other press was limited to the press area?

while i understand freedom of the press; its not like gamegune is the only organization to attempt to corner the market with exclusivity

good last paragraph from #29

i wouldnt consider "Without asking for a dime in return from their users." a very true statement; that last section by bsl seemed to be trying to elicit very negative and guilty feelings towards gamegune/mym not very unbiased reporting and yes i see the stupid "Editor's note: The following article is solely the opinion of the author and in no way reflects the opinion of GotFrag.com or its parent company, Major League Gaming."

#23 - "Just think about writers from 50 sites running around in a players area. Completely impossible to have it like that. "

I've been to events where everyone with a presspass could enter the playing area to film and take pictures (CPL Winter, Intel Summer Championships ect..), and it worked really well actually. So i don't think that would be a real problem.
