Counter-Strike: WCG Finals 2007 CS Preview

By: Gotfrag Announcements - Published October 03, 2007 at 5:12 AM EDT - Writer Archive
The GotFrag crew brings you the WCG Counter-Strike 1.6 World Finals event preview.

Contributors to this article include: James "jame^s" O'Connor, Jeff "JeFFY" Suckow, Brian Panchuk, Gabriel "UbinTubin" Ubatuba, Chris "decline" Allevi, Brent "bpex" Meeder, and Jon "Infernal_" Yacker

The best team from each country will be here in Seattle in order to claim the glory, as well as their piece of the prize pool. The event will feature some huge names from across the globe. While a few consider Pentagram or fnatic the favorites to win, there are a ton of teams with the potential upset them and end their tournaments shy of the podium.

Below are some of the top teams who will be in attendance. Almost all of the teams listed are world class and are capable of giving us some entertaining matches. Given the right conditions, nearly any of these teams are capable of defeating one another.

Group A
Pentagram

Poland Filip "Neo" Kubski
Poland Lukasz "LUq" Wnek
Poland Wiktor "TaZ" Wojtas
Poland Mariusz "lrd" Cybulski
Poland Jakub "Kuben" Gurczyński

PGS is one of the most consistent teams in the world right now and definitely one of the favorites to win WCG 2007. Hailing from Poland, PGS is one of the most competitive teams in the Counter-Strike scene nowadays and has attended basically every major LAN tournament in the past two years, placing within the top three more often than not. Their all-star lineup contains one of the most notoriously outstanding players in the world, Filip ‘NEO’ Kubski, who boasts an amazing 1.1 FPR according to GameSense.

While NEO may be the X-Factor for PGS, they have many other facets of their game that allow them to perform well. Sometimes they are displayed through their teamwork and chemistry; other times they are evident through a player’s ability to lock down a particular spot on a map. PGS has the experience, chemistry, and adaptive ability that they need in order to place top three in this tournament, although they will not be satisfied with anything other than first place.

Evil Geniuses

Canada Halston "teknikal Bellintani
Canada Robert "blackpanther" Tyndale
Canada Ian "royle" Royle
Canada Jesse “quickshot” Stevenson
Canada Evan “evaN” Ahlberg

It is not surprising to see that Evil Geniuses have made it to the WCG world stage to represent Canada yet again. It is surprising, however, to see that although EG qualified, names like Stevenson and Lari aren’t the ones shown on the roster. Now gracing the roster of EG are names like Evan, Teknikal, Royle, Blackpanther, and Quickshot.

Coming off of a near upset at the WCG Canada Finals, they have been playing every night to perfect their teamwork in preparation for the big event. However, a problem arose when Cole found out he would not be able to make the finals in Seattle. They have recently confirmed that Teknikal (from teams like DeadZone and Doctors/x6) is going to be taking his place, and they have picked up where they left off in terms of getting ready. While many place them as shoe-ins for advancement, they have to face a very tough Russian and Polish team in KPOBb and Pentagram. An upset over either of those two teams will, however, almost guarantee a spot for them in the double elimination round.

KPOBb

Russia Viktor "Sally" Filimonchenko
Russia Roman "ROMJkE" Makarov
Russia Alexey "LeX" Kolesnikov
Russia Viktor "Mosk" Moskvin
Russia Vladimir "Tarlund" Perevolockij

While the Russians have assembled this pug team in lieu of virtus being unable to attend the qualifier, it consists of three of their strongest players in Alexey "LeX" Kolesnikov Viktor "Sally" Filimonchenko and Roman "ROMJkE" Makarov. Joining them are Viktor "Mosk" Moskvin and Vladimir "Tarlund" Perevolockij who have played in forZe together among other top Russian teams.

Anyone who sleeps on this team, especially EG during the group stage, is going to be in for a rude awakening. Virtus is back in top shape, so you can be sure that their individual talents rival those of any of the top players. They can easily be the team to prevent EG from advancing out their Group. Later down the line, they will probably suffer a bit, due to their pug status, but they should not be taken lightly by any of the teams in attendance.

"This team is riding on recent success"

Why don't you talk about their recent success with plastE? Because there is nothing but failures?

CMAX should've attended imho.. Fnatic for teh win, PGS for teh second and NoA for teh third perhaps.

#6 plastE, contE, naSu, tihOp...

Because of one loss againt cmax, who has beaten other top teams several times, you totally throw NoA's chances away. As far as I remember they've played really really well lately both online (NGL) and offline (ESWC + clanbase)

Some of the write ups we really general in my opinion. Saying if X player doesn't do well, their team will flop or be completely destroyed. Some of the write ups are either rushed, or not well thought out. There are alot more to top teams like this than X player doing well.To much emphasis was put on game sense, and even some of the writers listed (i don't think i have to name who) know that there is ALOT more to this game than gamesense. Alot of experience from the writers on these, kinda disappointed in the way some of these great teams were portrayed.

and im sorry whoever said noa will only top 10, i have no idea how you got the gig to write for this site

too bad someone who has obviously no clue about the european scene is writing such articles. most of the predictions are full of phrases without any background information. and the us-team will suck on international level anyways, with our without lim.
and as an author for cs-coverage you should know about noas excellent recent results. theres no doubt they are on of the top favourites.

I really disagree with your comments that there is "no reason" emg shouldn't win their group. It's my opinion that A-gaming is the superior team; however, i do see them advancing out of the group stage.

watch out for the french. They will go big soon.

That g3x team is incredibly good has alays rivaled mibr if not topped them. They've been a top stide for years and their international experience runs deep. Only a fool would count them out as a favourite for top 10 if not 5.

I agree with few comments about NoA. I dont think they will be great on LAN, I think their mix of players dont handle pressure well. Could be wrong, will see how they go!

I didn't read much of the article, just scimmed. Ive said it over and over, its not hard to produce creative fresh quality articles. Lias with bsl, god maybe even talk to midway. These previews are big pieces in the community.

Yeah, the writers' general lack of knowledge about the game shone through. Either that, or they really just didn't try to write a decent article.

EDIT: James "jame^s" O'Connor, Jeff "JeFFY" Suckow, Brian Panchuk, Gabriel "UbinTubin" Ubatuba, Chris "decline" Allevi,

I guess it was the latter.

O and also I hope Lim recovers and can get to seattle to help with EMG ^_^The beat x6 and turmoil to get there and then something like that happens and they cant be at 100% :( I do think there are better players than hostile avaible that emg would know out of game and ingame well but not many. I hope he plays well and helps emg get out of Group play :)

and
Jesse "quickshot" Stevenson who is Stevensons(bloodshots) Little brother :)

They could phrased is ALOT better though

you forgot that they failed at NGL lan finals losing against a bad SK, lol.

europcup and danish qualifiers, they struggled in those easy tournaments and fnatic can be beaten online.

"They easily won the Danish qualifier"

They didn't. It was 1-1 in maps and won the last one 19-17 in OT vs gravitas.

nice trying.

Will people stop citing Neo's false FPR?

The collective statistics for the WEG season that PGS attended for all 5 members was added to Neo's total, which grossly inflates his statistics.

This is your website, your writers/editors should be doing the research.

Edit: For example, I would really love to know how he gets 6 frags per round.

There is really no challenge in this group for Team Denmark and if they can beat emuLate! of France, they should have no problem winning their group. I don’t see them winning the event, but they have a good chance to place in the top 10.

dude if NOA takes it as i say NOW, ur gonna eat ur socks baby, their so hot, just crushed fnatic, though it was online, its still the same game;)
