One team disqualified. Several red cards handed out. NationsCup XI has not been good for ClanBase's name. ![]() Fans all over the world were overwhelmed with joy as they now had the chance to see their favorite players compete side-by-side in a tournament where only one thing was important: leading your nation to victory. NationsCup XI started off with a qualifier round which had its peak in the match between Portugal and the Czech Republic. At the time however, no one knew of the controversial situation in the making. The Czech side - which had lost the match 2-1 - delivered a protest to ClanBase about Luan "luna" Martins from Portugal having used what is known as "crouch running" or "silent running" during the game. This article is not about whether or not Portugal used silent running in the match against Czech Republic. Martins did use it and for that he was rightfully punished according to the rules. Rather, the problem lies in how lightly this matter has been handled by ClanBase. Despite the efforts from the Czech Republic to have the match repeated, ClanBase decided to give Portugal a forfeit loss because the possibility of a rematch was not part of the tournament's rules. The Clanbase's Counter-Strike rulebook for NationsCup XI states the following regarding silent running, included in the rule is a defined punishment for engaging in its practice: Tapping duck in order to quiet your footsteps' sound significantly (silent run aka Russian Jumps) is considered to be bug abuse and results in a forfeit loss. The main point of the discussion following the match - a discussion that is currently still being debated - is what does ClanBase define as silent running? Also, how often does it have to be used to result in one being punished? Understand that if no one had filed a report on the Portugal - Czech Republic match, the former would have proceeded to the main tournament. This, despite the fact that they clearly broke the rules. This truly affects ClanBase's credibility and causes one to doubt how the organization adheres to its own rules. If there is an admin for each match, how is it that he can't judge on his own whether or not a player has used silent run for his advantage? Is a crime only a crime if someone notices it? The atmosphere of this league is that this tournament should be played for fun because there is no actual prize money at stake. After this though, is there really any fun left in the tournament? In addition, this situation has resulted in several players justifying their own infractions with the argument, "Player X used silent run more than I did, why was my team penalized when his was not?" ClanBase has already changed its view on silent running on multiple occasions. This means that all matches are now to be subject to analysis - whether or not silent running had been used - if anyone files a complaint. Three red cards have already been handed out, and three other matches are currently being analyzed by the time this article was published. With the ESL ENC on its way bearing a 55,000€ prize purse, more-experienced admins, and better organization, the writing is on the wall. It is easy to see that ClanBase NationsCup's importance will definitely diminish until the tournament eventually reaches its end. A shame, considering NationsCup was one of the most prestigious European events in eSports' history. We deserved better. |

I think this is irrelevant. It's a teams responsibility to file a complaint. I personally don't think Clanbase has lost any credibility.
hehe
byebye NC
There is no other way.
It clearly states in the rules that its not allowed, and it also clearly states that if caught doing so will result in a forfeit loss.
Just because someone else may get away with it does not give you the right to use it, nor to complain about the rules and regulations when you are caught.
"The Fall of NationsCup" is such a attention seeking tabloid like title, should have been "The Fall of Gotfrag's Article Quality".
#12 it's simple, clear and direct to the point, something you're not used to.
they are taking too long to punish high-rated teams like Sweden and others.. wondering why :x
A video was released to the public a few days ago showing several players from big nations, such as, Finland, Sweden and Norway, making silent runs.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6AVPvWqyME
When the video was released, we posted it on the report at ClanBase, 20 minutes later, the link and the post have been deleted.
After so many posts, they just quited deleting ours posts with the link because the main damage was already done. The link had been posted on the main gaming sites, such as GotFrag, HLTV, SK-Gaming.
After that they changed the rules 2 more times. To a final 'all matches will be investigated with or without complains'.
This was almost 1 week ago and only 2 nations have red cards, Finland and Greece.
We tried to get some answers from the admins, particularly from the cup supervisor and the game supervisor, which we still didn't get any answer, but instead of that we got a game admin calling us (Portuguese members) morons.
A new video is under "construction" and will be released in the following days.
Meanwhile, we are still waiting for, at least, 4 red cards. Clearly ClanBase is pretty deeper in the hole.
EDIT: I think the match should of been replayed. When i first heard about the problem, since the admins made rash decisions of the outcome, it should have been fair. In my opinion the match should of been played again, or atleast the map that started the dispute.
making an e-drama out of nothing
why is this such a shamefull thing? chzech did a standup thing trying to get the match replayed, rather than the easy forfeit loss, which they should get judging from the rules.
and the rules are clear, whats this bs about not stating how many times it needs to be done? it sais crouch hopping (so even if its just once) results in a forfeit loss.
yeah theres an admin for each match, but should they watch ALL 10 players demos afterwards? that would take hours. get_real ;)
#14 now if that was in the article it would have been a good one :P
sorry miraa but Im used to better stuff from you ;x
Was pretty nice if MIRA could include the video on the article. Dunno why he didn't do it lol.
Kudos to Clanbase/NationsCup. The more these leagues crack down on this exploit, the less fgts will keep trying to justify it.
I agree with #12. Since when has Gotfrag turned into tabloids? It's one thing to allow for editorials, but it just seems like over half the articles these days are such instead of just reporting the news from an unbias perspective.
Post the damn facts of an issue and let the opinions occur in the comment section or keep it at Soap Box. Your job is to feed us info, not convince us which side to take in any issue.
We can see by the video that pros from other nations are still doing it and nothing happens to them, a red card at most, if that's how it works then why wasn't luna suspended or something like that?
Double standards ftw!
Get of MIRAA, this isn't tabloids it is in fact an unbiased article and altough the title is not the most apropriate it's a good read.
ps: and cpl/wsvg were european lol..
get a nap, you really need it.
to forbid crouch jumping because "you're not supposed to walk that fast without making noise, or coz it's f*in up your hitboxes" is like trying to rule out rocket jumping in quake coz "you're not supposed to jump that high"
just let it be...
although i fully support miraa's european coverage <3.
and #20 the only important league in the world (aka ESL) allows duck jumping, so saying euro's don't allow it is ignorant, when clearly every 'good' euro league allows it.
As for the NC, keep it in the proper perspective. It's not very serious and the winner doesn't gain anthing so all the lame complaining could cease.
"everyone" cheat,silentruns etc etc...
'the only important league in the world (aka ESL)'
I could just tell you 2 or 3 situations worst than this one happening in ESL, but cba searching them..
#29 200% agree.

ClanBase admited the mistake. More red cards to come, Nations beeing disqualified, and "all the pros do it, this rule won't stop them" beeing proved.
kkthxbye
Seems like its definition and punishment is laid out very clearly. Why was this a discussion point again? You wouldn't have to use it any more than once to face the consequences.
It's sad that these "professionals" all continue to cheat despite there being a very clear rule against what they're doing.
2º play by the rules
3º break the rules and get disqualified
It is impossible to usefully watch 10 player PoVs at once so there is no point trying, a match admin's job is to help organise the match and step in if there are any problems during the game, not referee it
gj mira, dont blame him for the unspecified silly CB rules...
#42 perfectly right i'd honestly like to see ALL the nations that did it eliminated so at least in the clanbase XI i'll see a final like in the old days, where no one would be like some effin' kangaroo wearing just socks on the map
UPDATE: i've checked the CB website and Romania, Switzerland, Sweden, Serbia and the UK all were given forfeit losses. also :
"We have got some complaints of Norway using silent run but the times we were given had some borderline cases. He did some footstep sounds and the periods he did it were so short he would have got the same effect by just jumping forward and ducking while in air normally.
We are still checking if Slovakia used silent run in their match against Greece. Greece told us that Slovakia's h4 used silent run but he did just normal bunny hopping.
If there are any other matches where rule breaks occured and they haven't been punished yet, please send us email to nationscup.cs@gmail.com and give times from the demo when this abuse can be seen."
This means that Portugal was only treated like all the other nations and that there's nothing affecting CB's credibility, imho. Perhaps the movie you guys did actually had an impact, or they were already analysing those. who cares, i raise my hat to the CB staff for actually taking a strong stand against a controversial issue, and actually eliminating those "top players that have a reflex of silent running", regardless of their e-fame. GG CB
#48 yeah that would be cool... you know there are still burglars that get away with their robberies, should they just make theft legal so it would be easier to just let them get their loot rather than actually following, trialing and everything(of the ones getting caught, of course). Do you agree with legalising that, too?
