Counter-Strike: A page from the playbook of... Roccat

By: Nick Bee - Published March 23, 2008 at 1:23 AM EST - Writer Archive
Roccat executes a successful retake that depends on teamwork and timing during the NGL-ONE Finals.

Communication. It's a cornerstone of any successful team. It's also one of those words that's repeated ad nauseum in reference to top clans. However, what exactly is the importance of good communication?

Within the following retake, observe how the individual maneuvers within the overall retake flow together. Each player's positioning is critical as it allows others to focus on their area and not be worried about being surprised by a Terrorist.

During this pistol round in the final map of their third best-of-three series with fnatic, Roccat displays the payoff of great teamwork. After losing the banana bomb-site early in the round, the team regroups and retakes control, allowing for a strong start to the half. They not only did this once ... but were able to retake the site from fnatic several rounds in a row.

Expert Opinion
Mark "jESUIT" Cheben
There are two keys to a successful retake:

Stall the Terrorists. The trick is to stall long enough so that CTs can rotate in time. This allows the CTs to get in position BEFORE the Terrorists have the positional advantage. Often this takes the form of, at a minimum, trading frags and well placed flashes.

Work the man advantage. Set up one on multiples situations as you retake the site. By working the number advantage in the small game a team will win whilst a team who goes in one at a time will lose. In this strategy, Roccat has mastered the second key.

Here is how they executed this strategy

contE - B Defender
plastE - A Defender
Ruuit - A Defender
lurppis - A Defender
Nasu - A Defender

The round begins with contE running alone to the B bomb-site and stopping outside the archway to the banana hallway where he waits for signs of a rush. Upon seeing the Terrorists pushing up quickly, he fires off a few shots and alerts his teammates at A. While they begin to rotate to back him up, contE falls back. He throws a grenade into the oncoming rush, which will prove crucial later in the round. After throwing his grenade, contE falls back even further to CT spawn being careful to dodge flashes.

plastE is the first of four CTs rotating from A to back-up contE. He throws a flash from CT spawn, pauses behind the boxes as the flash goes off, and then grenades the typical planting spot. plastE then waits for the rest of his teammates. plastE also gets out of the way of the teammates with grenades and puts himself at the back of the line.

Ruuit is second to rotate, he passes by the retreating plastE as well as contE who is holding behind the right stack of boxes. Ruuit moves to the forward box stack to cover the back hall lurppis, the next in line, throws a flash over the entrance from CT spawn and then flashes the back hall from the ledge by the pit. This allows Ruuit to run across the banana site arch. He then tucks in behind the first back hall boxes to stop pushing T's following lurppis' flash.

lurrpis follows into the back-hall, throwing his HE grenade into the back corner. He presses against the left set of boxes in the back hall. Ruuit meanwhile covers down the hallway from behind the first set of boxes. plastE follows behind lurppis and stops just behind him. This "leapfrogging" maneuver allows roccat to quickly and effectively enter the back hall and clear spots T's might be hiding in.

As the last player entering the back-hall, Nasu stands behind the first tower and throws a HE grenade followed by a flash into the bomb site. While back hall action is underway, contE stands watch at the CT side archway watching for T's in the banana or making a push.

The push into the bomb-site begins with Ruuit baiting himself, to find where the T's are hiding, as he runs into the site first. Ruuit takes a few shots and drops back while plastE and lurppis sweep up the back of the site. Nasu takes the front side of the site, clearing as he goes with Ruuit now behind him. contE continues watching the Banana hall side entrance and pushes towards it. With the site secure, plastE diffuses.

This play is an excellent example of a well oiled team working as one cohesive unit. They may not have planned out this exact situation beforehand but the maneuvers they did practice for worked perfectly.

Reading the article is kind of confusing, there should be subtitles or maybe a set order in the images so we could get what's going on without giving it too much tought.

#12 has it, I think one random Ak47 peek while they have flashes held could obliterate the take back.

#12 Makes no sense at all, no one is going to rush B with 5 aks against an eco round, first of all. Second, if your eco strat is for one guy to peek banana with a usp, your team probably isn't good. Third, Ts are never going to take b on a gun round with 10 players still alive unless something very strange is happening.

In summary go back to brazil and learn to play cs.

really nice!

#12 and #19, this is a pistol round, and yeah in a gunround one ak could spray down the entire backalley/sidehall, that is true.

btw while they have flashes out? they have this "leapfrog" system where always some1 is in front with the USP and the 2nd or thrid in line throws flashes from cover (by teammates/boxes)

#22 yes because there's so many teams with ingenous setups way better than fnatic on b, like yours. of course there's going to be guys hanging back in banana hall, and ofcourse they're dependant on who shoots HS and who doesn't. not the point stop whining, if you don't like these write ups dont read them.
I enjoy reading them even though I don't use them and play CS anymore.

i think 4 players in alleyway is too much.. it can be better if two players go uder the arch. But it is only my idea.. btw n1 article ;)
