Counter-Strike: Revival Tour Preview

By: Jeff Suckow - Published April 22, 2008 at 11:18 PM EDT - Writer Archive
With the first event in the Revival Tour set to start later this week, GotFrag brings you a preview of the participating teams.

In just a handful of days the first event in the GotFrag Revival Tour will begin. Up for grabs is over $1000 in cash and prizes. In the mix are the best of the best from the United States and Canada. Be prepared to witness thrilling matches as we sort out who is the best of the best.

The tournament is setup in typical double elimination fashion; with the map rotation being chosen from the usual Nuke, Dust2, Inferno, Train, and Mill. This is the first of three preliminary events in the GotFrag Revival Tour, culminating into the Grand Finals later this year.

The event is set to start at 1PM EST on Saturday, April 26th. Be sure to check out GotFrag's full coverage of the event, and get your octoshape plug-in to get fired up for some GFTV action! To give you a better idea of the teams you will see this Saturday, below is the team preview of the event.

Prizes

GotFrag will be featuring SteelSeries products for the GotFrag Revival Tour winners. This first event will include the new SteelSeries 7G Keyboard and the new SteelSeries SP hard plastic mousepad.

Grand Prize: $1,000 + 5x SteelSeries 7G Keyboards

Second Place: 5x SteelSeries 7G Keyboards

Third Place: 5x SteelSeries SP Mousepads

Invited Teams

United States x3o
Ediz "goodfornothing" Basol
Derrick "impulsive" Truong
Matt "PaTyoJoN" Iantosca
Dan "mehLer" Mehler
Ben "theNuT" Hui

x3o has been nothing short of outstanding this season in CEVO Pro. They wrapped up the regular season in the top spot with a 12-4 record, and they haven't lost a step even after changing fifths. They are heading into playoffs with tons of momentum, and look very capable of being repeat champions.

That being said, they have been cooling off in the shade of EG.usa. So far, EG has had their number, keeping them to second place at kode5 US and the x3o preliminary. However, x3o is entering this event with a chip on their shoulders. In both of their matches with their rival this season in CEVO, they have arrived on top. Their consistent, strong play both online and on LAN might be the difference.

Strengths:

Consistency both on LAN and online. Unlike EG.usa, x3o has been able to remain successful both on LAN and online, placing among the top two at almost every event they have participated in with this core lineup.

Weaknesses:

With two losses to them during the CEVO season, MoB may very well be x3o's kryptonite. If they find themselves facing their west coast counterparts during this event, they will have to figure out a way of beating the team who has two of their former players, and has thus far had their number.

Prediction:

First. It's hard not to imagine a finals featuring x3o and EG, and x3o has repeatedly taken the better of EG when they have met online.

United States EG.USA
Michael "chE" Guevara
Scott "evolution" Cavallero
Nazar "steno" Vynnytsky
Jordan "n0thing" Gilbert
Ryan "NineSpot" Bell

EG.USA has been absolutely dominant this past year, taking the top spot at every North American exclusive event they've attended. Despite that fact, they have been unable to translate that success to online events. Most recently, they won the x3o preliminary event with newly added fifth NineSpot. Then less than a week later, they were sent packing from the SteelSeries koth event by the Canadian CS squad in their organization.

Despite their clearly deficient online play, EG.USA enters the CEVO Pro playoffs with the fifth seed. They will be looking to improve on their third place finish last season.

Strengths:

Dominance over the rest of the country. EG.usa has been unbeatable by other North American teams in major events for nearly a year now.

Weaknesses:

EG may still be working out some kinks with their new fifth, NineSpot. Also, they have been historically known to have lackluster results during online play.

Prediction:

If they can get over the mental block they have when it comes to the internet, they should have no problem taking home top two here. However, do not be surprised if you see them lose to a team who struggles versus them on LAN.

United States Green Berets
James "jame^s" Oconnor
Anthony "m4gic" Coriale
Josh "pinekone" Springer
Ted "LuckeyTed" Weinrich
William "Sh0ts" Griffith

Green Berets is back, and with nearly the same lineup they had back during their glory days. Missing from their old roster is Dan Mehler who brought a lot of firepower to his former team. His spot has been filled by Sh0ts, James' most recent project. While he has been playing well for them in CEVO Main, he has yet to fully experience top level competition.

Ted, m4gic, and pinekone have been pretty quiet for the past few months. m4gic came back to CS with the EG team and played with them for Kode5 US. They made a quick first round exit, and that particular lineup did not last much longer. Ted and pk have only come back recently, when the previous GB reincarnation fizzled out just a few days after it was announced.

Strengths:

While GB is currently only in CEVO Main, their lineup consists of four of five players from past lineups. With that lineup, they have in the past been very competitive with the top teams in the country. If they can kick off the rust and piece together the teamwork and chemistry they had in the past, GB can be a contender.

Weaknesses:

There are two major weaknesses which GB must overcome. First, is the fact that many of the teams competing in this event have players who have played with GB's leader and strat caller, jame^s. With so many players knowing how he thinks and calls, GB will need to make considerable changes to avoid being anti-strated. Second, a major weakness is that this team is built more with the future in mind, with Sh0ts still being called a "work in progress."

Prediction:

GB still has a lot of work to do. Regardless of Sh0ts' playing ability, the rest of their players have been inactive for some time, and will need to kick off the rust if they are going to do anything but make fools of themselves at this event. If they can do that, they should have no problem getting to the second day of the event.

We might not be able to participate in the 1st preliminary, due to a LAN event we will be attending this Saturday. If we find it not suitable for our team to try to play from the event, we will be giving up our spot, and hopefully get an auto-berth to the 2nd preliminary!

Yes, #9 you already pointed that out, and did you know that EG had it after MYM did? So its not really that big of deal, and I don't see why you keep pointing it out, its just a web address.

Anyways, I hope we are able to play in this tournament, and either way if we do or don't, I would like to wish all the teams good luck and hope this will be a great tournament.

I play about 8 months in the year. I generally stop playing at the beginning of September and pick it back up in January sometime. Makes playing CS enjoyable when you don't have to play it year round. I generally only play 4 days a week for 2-3 hours on those days. Just don't have enough time in the day to be playing 40 hours a week. ;)
