Jonas Alsaker Vikan is on site in the KODE5 press area. Here is why this weekend everybody should look to Russia’s capitol Moscow. ![]() For more reasons than one, Moscow is the place to be on the planet right now. It is where history will be made over the course of the next two weeks in a variety of different fields – from geo-politics - to professional football (soccer) – and ultimately to electronic sports. Yesterday, May 7th, was the day when President Putin's, or “tsar” Putin as audiences have labeled him – both out of fear and affection, term of office ended. His successor, Dimitri Medvedev will take the helm of a country on a forward surge. During Putin’s reign economic growth has been stable per annum. It has graced the Russian people with more rubles to spend. years ago when the St. Petersburg, ex-KGB native took office more than 30 % were living below the state designated poverty line. In 2008 that number is much lower (currently at 12.5 – or 14 % according to Wikipedia) - but as with everything it has come at a price. The president’s hardline approach has contributed to a decrease in public freedom and civil rights. Journalists not on accord with the regime have suffered isolation, threats – and in some tragic cases - death by the hands of unknown henchmen. Russia’s position in the world-wide community has suffered as the country has strayed further away from the European Union, NATO and the United States in terms of international relations. Putin has quite literally been his own man. The fear many have now, is that the new kid on the block, Mr. Medveded – will be Putin’s man as well - as the former president exercise his influence as the country’s new prime minister and head of the biggest political party, United Russia. An interesting side-story to the high political theater unraveling before our eyes is the prestigious KODE5 event this weekend. The best the electronic sports CS: 1.6 world has to offer is on hand to duke it out. With Fnatic, SK Gaming, Made in Brazil, Meet Your (Polish) Makers and even home-town heroes Virtus. Pro in attendance - and Gotfrag on site to cover the she-bang, it should be enough to make fans foam at the mouth. Expect intense pictures capturing the emotions displayed as the teams fight for the 25 000 dollar pay day. Look forward to written content that take you inside the matches to outline the turning points and decisive plays that separates winners from the losers. Enjoy live blogs from the tournament area detailing the big and small events that can and will occur as the tournament progress. And, in what will be a Gotfrag first – expect specialized video content every day – from our team on site in Russia’s capitol. Drop what you are doing this weekend – your eyes need to be set on the St. Basil’s cathedral overlooking Red Square in Moscow. ![]() Related Links: KODE5 Viewers Guide emuLate set to miss KODE5 KODE5 Finals Seeds and Groups KODE5 Global Final Coverage by GotFrag TV Announced GotFrag TV |

made it to print. this is sort of tasteless.
hundreds of thousands of people dyin aint no laughin matter
not a fan of this boring article
Maybe you should stick to gaming news and not bring politics and biased views from international press into those. That would work a lot better since you don't know dick about Putin or what he's done for Russia.
Also ; The best the electronic sports CS: 1.6 world has to offer is on hand to duke it out.
I'm very glad you didn't included x3o in there... or any american team for instance...
Good Article hopefully ill be able to watch some of the matches live :D
It sucks I'll miss all the matches. *sighs* -_-
I was really looking forward to them too :(
don't take this direction next time besel, you gonna get flamed no matter how well you put it.
You also neglected to mention that Putin has been given another title just one rank under in power than the one he had two days ago, Prime Minister of Russia.
Oh wait, we are playing a computer game.
We (Gotfrag) do appreciate all kinds of feedback on the stories we post. We also do realize our job is to cover electronic sports events around the globe in writing - and if possible, like in Moscow, through audio and video.
Does that mean that we have to choose to be oblivious to the events in the quote, un quote, real world?
Does it mean that the people competing in computer games and thriving from it has fans that only cares about what is going happening on their computer, and videoscreens?
Personally, I sure as hell hope not - which is the exact reasoning for highlighting some of the real world circumstances relevant to this country, city - and (in the same of place of order as listed in the article) the electronic sports event that is happening here.
As for #21 - and others - READ the contents of the article:
"The fear many have now, is that the new kid on the block, Mr. Medveded – will be Putin’s man as well - as the former president exercise his influence as the country’s new prime minister and head of the biggest political party, United Russia."
To the rest of you - we are not CNN, we never will be - that does not mean we remain ignorant to real world occurances as we cover virtual world events.
I hope you enjoy our continued coverage of Kode 5 Moscow.
Jonas
edit: I see your point, but journalists have been crucified for far less contestable statements than the first sentence. I'm sure people appreciate knowing a little more about russia and its political situation, but I think the way the topic was introduced was in poor taste.
and instead of claiming that bsl doesn't know "dick about putin or what he's done for russia" you should rather make clear where you think that he is wrong. like #13 said bsl's description seems to be dead on (and you should notice that he's not going that far in it). don't just say "buuuh you don't have a clue" but prove your point. otherwise not saying anything at all would be the better choice i think.
for my final paper in english 2 in high school i quoted tina turner for an essay on shakespeare's use of love in romeo and juliet. it was kind of a joke but not really cause the quote fit in pretty good. i got an A on that paper but my teacher said there was no point to put something that is so high with something that in the scheme of things (i.e. in shakespeare's play) is so irrelevent
i mean come on, this article is trying to say a counter-strike LAN is more important than russia's political agenda that will effect tens of millions of people, a catastrophic cyclone that killed over 100,000 people, and also the most powerful nation in the world's chief political race
come on...
btw im not saying that is what BSL is saying. what im saying is that as its worded, that is exactly how it comes across, which is why like that other guy i find it really tasteless
your phrasing is, whether you are aware of it or not, poor in this case.
and sentences don't only come across exactly as they are worded. thats the simpleminded way of reading i was criticizing before. it's not fair towards the article and author imo. but you need to be able to read between the lines a tiny bit of course.
#33 notice how he's saying "forget about newsreels [...], forget coverage of [...]" in the first sentence. imo there's quite a difference between saying "forget about burma" or saying "forget about newsreels on burma". and bsl is only (and not even totally seriously) saying the latter.
On a personal note, I thought the article was ok.
Also, to the people that thought
was rough, you obviously missed the whole point of the first paragraph and its intent.
Anyways, good job bsl.
Good article.
This obviously isn't a traditional medium for those kinds of statements but this is BSL's blog and I'm pretty sure (especially with the event still being set up) that he may say whatever he would like.
it's called constructive criticism.
capital, not capitol ;$
decent article though not so much related to CS, too bad there's no preview on kode5 global finals on gotfrag aswell :<
LOL
Maybe it's because I'm having a few post-exam drinks right now, but I can't really see a correlation between Russia's political agenda and Virtus.Pro aside from them both hailing from the same country.
When you connect the Hornets and Hurricane Katrina, there is a thread of relevance connecting the two. BSL sounds like he's pulling at straws.
But that's just me.
