Counter-Strike: CEVO announces Placement Tournament

By: Brent Meeder - Published June 16, 2008 at 4:03 AM EDT - Writer Archive
CyberEvolution returns for another installment of the Professional Placement Tournament beginning on June 26nd.
CyberEvolution is back again with their most popular event, the Placement Tournament. The event consists of 16 teams in a double elimination format. Among these 16 teams, there are 2 teams from CEVO-P Season 8, the top 7 teams from CEVO-M Season 8, the top 2 teams from the CEVO OCZ tournament, and 5 wildcards. Out of these 16 teams, the top 4 teams will advance to the CEVO-P Division. The 12 teams that do not qualify for the Professional Division will receive automatic invitations to the Main Division (CEVO-M).

The Professional Placement Tournament is utilized so as to remove subjective opinions and any influence of people from the selection process. Teams for CEVO-P qualify exclusively based on their proven performance against other top caliber teams.

Reschedules and postponements are NOT allowed, exceptions will only be made for very extreme circumstances. In regard to this, ALL TEAMS are recommended to have at least 7 members on their roster in the event you cannot field your regular 5.

CEVO Professional Placement Attendees

1. Stacked Like Pancakes (CEVO-P 7th)
2. Nightmare Online (CEVO-P 9th)
3. Sway Gaming (CEVO-M 1st)
4. Ferocity (CEVO-M 2nd)
5. j1n (CEVO-M 3rd)
6. Green Berets (CEVO-M 4th)
7. EG.ca (CEVO-M 6th)
8. (OCZ Tournament 1st)
9. (OCZ Tournament 2nd)
10. interPlay.zoi (CEVO-M 7th)
11. Malevolent Revolution (CEVO-M 8th)
12. Paragon of Virtue (Wildcard)
13. Guardians (Wildcard)
14. Habitants (Wildcard)
15. NoPression (Wildcard)
16. Devastation (Wildcard)

The Wildcard selections will not be final until three days prior to the event. Wildcard spots were also randomly seeded. Should any of the above teams fold, they will be replaced with a team from the original set of applications.

Matches for the double elimination bracket will begin on June 26nd and play out until July 3rd. More information can be found at www.cevo.com

Smells like a good little tourney.
;o

By my calculations, bulldozer with fire coming out the back should be at least the 5th seed, what is cevo thinking?

There are to many teams for this placement tournament.

I would have liked to see 12 teams separated into 4 groups (3 teams in each). Then do a round robin, with only 1 team advancing from each group. Then you of course play double elimination.

I mean nothing against a team like Malevolent Revolution but finishing 8th in Main, while good, is not really any reason to award them. I just think 16 gives to many teams that don't have a shot a shot... which will in essence make the group play uneven.

I am rather glad it's considered the most popular event. And as #4 said, 12 is more realistic.

well, if you look @ us, on our way to CEVOmain finals we had alot of 16-14 with teams like mRev and TTB so, i mean if we're getting 3rd seed, theres no doubt in my mind that these other teams would be able to keep up with the competition as well.

#6 - Lee Westwood finished 1 stroke behind Tiger Woods at the 2008 U.S Open. However, the two
players are not comparable.

While I consider CEVO the better of the two leagues in America CAL has always made it harder for teams to advance through divisions which I think is better. There is always a random team or two in CEVO-P that can either not put in enough time that is required or just does not have enough skill. Limiting this event to 12 teams would probably help that problem out.

I am also interested in how they are doing this OCZ tournament stuff. I mean MoB.Gaming and x3o are already in CEVO-P while nMo and Sway Gaming already have an invite to the placement. Also a team like NoPression will certainly get one of those wild card spots.

What does that all mean? Well that means 5 out of the 12 teams that are in the OCZ final bracket are already either in CEVO-P or will have a chance to make it. If all those 5 teams finish 1-5 in the OCZ tournament is CEVO really going to dip down and take the teams that finished 6th and 7th? If that in fact is the case I don't see really to many teams that have ANY business even being thought of as a team in the placement tournament. I hope this does not happen but I guess we will see.

All I am saying is that if CEVO wants to keep CEVO-P as the prestigious league in N/A they are going to need to make it harder to get into.

#8 A lot of these teams could fair well in Cevo-P, whether theyd walk in and win their first season is highly unlikely but all of these teams are pretty talented in one way or another, and deserve their shot. Only 4 of 16 teams get a chance to move up, that's not exactly handing out CEVO-P spots. Ontop of that, Im not sure what delusional world you lived in years ago, but CAL-I was always filled with teams that were undeserving of remaining in invite. With constant roster changes, lack luster performances, and re-entries simply because they were under the same name.

#12 - Well, CAL-I simply inviting the teams back again was one of the reasons I created the placement tournament.

That said, 12 teams and group play + double elimination would be better at getting more dedicated and consistent teams. We shall see how this plays out though.

believe it or not, the CEVO-P placement tournament is actually very difficult. This is the only opportunity for teams to make it into CEVO-P and only 4 will pass through per season. It is very selective and teams with high skill could incidentally spend several seasons(if not years) trying to get into CEVO-P. CEVO-Professional is the new CAL-Invite.

I never said the placement wasn't competitive but instead has flaws. Making it 12 teams would make much more sense. I mean as you see there are only two teams in the placement that were actually in CEVO-P from last season so in reality that would give 10 other teams a chance to make CEVO-P (which were not in P the previous season) which is more then enough.

I don't want to bad mouth any team (so I won't mention any names) because any team that makes it into CEVO-P has to be half decent but there were a couple of teams that made it through the Placement tournament that had no real business being in Pro. I mean yes, they did advance through the placement but their groups were filled with other teams that had no business trying to make CEVO-P (ie. their group would be filled with previous season CEVO-P teams that were just pugging or forfeiting and other CEVO-Main teams).

I mean of course that will still happen with 12 teams but it will make it less random and in case of a team forfeiting or dieing before the Placement starts you can move up one of those other 4 teams that would normally have made it instead of having to go even further down into Main to find a team that can play.

#18 Exactly. While the scene is not nearly as deep as it once was CEVO-P is still very competitive and I don't think some of these Placement teams would have a shot at making it in CEVO-P and would just end up dieing.

So, basically, people can't get better from season to season? They just stay the same?

I agree with #6, certain people can be off, certain people can on... It depends on the map situation etc. I think this gives more teams a chance to prove themselves... Just like Iniquity 3 seasons ago.

So, basically, people can't get worse from season to season? They just stay the same?

Assuming is never a good thing.... Instead of me assuming I actually have experence with the placement tournament and know what has happened int he past. If teams like mRev have in fact improved, then more power to them but I don't think any team that has finished 8th or worse has ever made it into CEVO-P.

So I mean while you can make the argument that it at least gives them a chance you can also make the argument that they may also water down their group making a team advance that maybe shouldn't.

#25 pretty sure if you're given a shot to prove yourself, you're gonna practice and defiantly get better for it.

not get worse.
and what hell are you talking about assuming... you're assuming also, maybe this tournement consisting of more than 12 teams is gonna be competitive.

Assuming would be something I didn't know ;)

But seriously... of course I don't know how this placement will turn out but as I said previously... I am using past seasons as examples for why I think it should be 12 teams.

so whos gonna get first place and 2nd place in the ocz spots?

Sway is already there for cevo-main champs and x3o and MoB are already in cevo-p.

Well i see they gave eximus the first place but who gets the 2nd? Skull gaming, iconGaming, wcR and NP.

Id vote NP but thats kinda a hard decision, either way most of those teams will probably be wild cards.

I guess what a CEVO admin told our team was that we play Skull Gaming on dust2 Sunday. If we happen to beat them we will play the winner of NoPression vs West Coast Rockers. The winner of that gets a spot in the tournament.

I'd say we deserve our spot in the placement tournament. We started the season 1-5 with no practice schedule, strats, or any specific play style. Halfway through the season, we completely changed our play style and worked on strats and ended up finishing the season with the final seed in the playoffs, going on to face #1 seed NoPression in the first round and losing to them in overtime, then going on to the lower bracket to knock out the 6th and 11th seed and lose to the eventual winners of cevo-m, Sway, 16-14 on de_nuke. Placing 2nd at a recent lan tournament and finishing 2nd in the last two WCG qualifiers (we finish 2nd a lot apparently lol), I'd say we've come a long way from the mRev of last season... or even the mRev from 6 months ago. We'll see how this placement tournament goes but I think everyone on this list deserves their spot and I'm sure it will be a fun tournament to watch.

(I'm in no way shape or form trying to brag about my team or say we're better than anyone else. Just trying to make a comment in response to BGS' comments about which teams were chosen for this tournament and who deserves their spot)

Joltx has downs, we lost to sway on inferno. And we suck, so that means that sway only sucks slightly less, which proves that this tourney sucks. If infact suckage couldn't be any more suckier sucky teams are playing in this sucking competition. God why does cevo suck. If we beat anyone, they just suck more than we suck, suck it?
