Counter-Strike: projeckt: "teams don’t take us seriously"

By: Jeff Suckow - Published September 17, 2008 at 8:33 PM EDT - Writer Archive
With the third GotFrag Revival Tour just days away, GotFrag sat down with team j1n's Chris 'projeckt' Costoso to discuss his play style and life outside Counter-Strike.
Name: Christopher Costoso
Alias: projeckt
Age: 20
Location: Carteret, New Jersey
Current Team: j1n
Past Teams: Heroes of e-Sports, The Precedence, Riot Police, Face Factor, and interPlay
Favorite Game: Counter-Strike 1.6

Please can you tell us who you are and a little about your gaming history?

My name is Christopher Costoso. I’m 20 years old and I live in New Jersey. I’m a full time student at Kean University and am going for my B.S. and Masters in Computational Mathematics.

I have played video games since I was about four, and started playing CS in 2004. My friend showed me the game and I actually hated it at first. I just remember one day ‘magically’ finding the game installed on my computer despite telling my friend not to install it (thanks Ant :P). I started playing it on my own, venturing into public servers and what not. The more I played, the more I got hooked and I never looked back since.

What has been your most memorable moment in gaming?

I think it has to be all the travelling I have done and more importantly, the people I have met along the way. I’ve met some really great people who have touched my life both positively and negatively. Regardless, I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

What is your most memorable in game/match moment?

Probably when Zeus (demos) and I won at Game Station against the old eMg line-up. It was against a good team and we also got lost on a mountain for about an hour and wound up in a completely different town with the same address as the LAN.

Or maybe quas’ ace versus the viGor pug on train at x3o. He accidentally bought an auto sniper, bunny hopped out mid and killed four guys. About 30 seconds passed, then he spammed the ladder train with his last bullet to catch the fifth guy flanking. Never know what hit 'em. I remember the entire LAN exploding after that.

What else do you do besides gaming?

I work two jobs and go to college. Any time that I have left is either devoted to playing CS or spent with my family and friends.

What is the story behind your alias?

There’s not really a story behind the alias. I was just thinking about a name and I thought pro_-jeckt looked alright. Besides, it was better than my first aliases, Nocturnal Chaos and Tadpo|e. :D

How would you describe your game in terms of play style?

I believe that I am able to adapt very well, playing both aggressively and passively all in the attempt to exploit my opponent’s weaknesses and dictate the flow of game. If I have a choice, however, I prefer playing more aggressively and take the game at a quicker pace. I feel that gaining position and being able to utilize it effectively is the key to success.

What makes you unique as a CS player?

Passion and desire. I think my passion and devotion to my team really sets me apart from other players. Whether I’m at an event with a pug or a dedicated team, I feel completely committed to the cause. Maybe it could be seen as a problem, as it can become too personal, but I think a team is like a family. I also feel that I have this insatiable desire to win, and I am constantly challenging myself to become the best.

Describe something unusual about your team that people should, but do not know?

I think that a lot of teams don’t take us seriously because of our antics and the image we portray to the public. However, I can honestly say that we are a dedicated team and, contrary to popular belief, we have pretty skilled and knowledgeable players. We just like to have fun... maybe too much fun ;)

If you had to pick a team, besides your own, to win GRT #3, which team would it be and why?

I’d have to go with EG. I think that x3o is a great team, and it’s hard to argue that they aren’t number one right now, but I feel that the EG players are more talented individually and by the time the tournament rolls around, I am sure they will be very well prepared as a team too. I think that people fall in love with in-game statistics too much. ;P

How do you personally prepare yourself for an event? Do you have any rituals that you perform before matches?

Nothing too special. If I’m not listening to music, I’m probably just ready to play.

Who is your personal hero or role model and why?

I would have to say my mother simply because she is the personification of perseverance. I mean, we used to live in a basement with one room, but she never quit. I think most of the success I have had in my life can be attributed to her.
