Counter-Strike: GRT #3 Player Spotlight: drew

By: Jeff Suckow - Published September 19, 2008 at 10:43 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Next under the player spotlight is Andrew 'dRew' Timmerman from team Paragon of Virtue...
Name: Andrew Timmerman
Alias: dRew / Irukandji
Age: 19
Location: Charleston, SC
Current Team: Paragon of Virtue
Past Teams: POV, MNM, d2x
Favorite Game: Counter-Strike 1.6

Please can you tell us who you are and a little about your gaming history?

I'm a college junior at the College of Charleston here in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina. I'm a Biology major and Chemistry minor with an interest in attending medical school following my graduation next year.

As far as gaming history, I played a ton of consoles growing up (Sega, SNES, N64, Dreamcast), but really moved away from consoles when I started playing sports for school. I started CS on December 24th 2001 after my next-door neighbor bought the entire HL1 expansion pack that included CS. I was hooked from Day 1, even though I was controlling the keyboard and he was moving the mouse to aim! :]

What has been your most memorable moment in gaming?

My most memorable moment has to be at Web2Zone, my first ever LAN, where my team of unknowns (POV - lectR, dRew, hero, aiMFree, sfX) beat Confederacy, a top 10 US team 2-3 years ago. I had never been to New York City before, so the feeling I had when I walked out of the LAN center into the middle of Manhattan totally stoked about winning (huge nerd, eh?) is something I'll never forget. Unfortunately, we choked versus MissedMe in the next match and failed to advance over Confederacy based on rounds :(

What is your most memorable in game/match moment?

A four kill round from the match versus Confederacy, simply because I remember my hands shaking, my voice cracking, and being as nervous as physically possible during that match haha. That nervous over a video game... looking back, it's kind of sad :O!

What else do you do besides gaming?

Online, I work for ESEA as Head of Lessons and will be helping to spearhead an upcoming expansion on a new front. Away from the computer, I like to think I'm a pretty average guy, but I'm definitely a hick that loves to hunt and spend time outdoors. I also play a ton of sports with friends in my free time (basketball, tennis, golf, soccer, volleyball, and a few others!).

I'm a sucker for crime-drama sitcoms and, since I want to go to medical school, I love Grey's Anatomy (catch a lot of flak for that one... haha). I also love to play chess. It's similar to CS in that you can really get a person heated without even saying a word :P

What is the story behind your alias?

I usually use the alias dRew, which was my nickname growing up, but the CS nickname I use (Irukandji) comes from a Discovery Channel special I watched a few years ago on one of the smallest jellyfish in the world that is hundreds of times more poisonous than a tarantula or a scorpion (how much cooler could an animal be?).

How would you describe your game in terms of play style?

I don't really think I have a specific play style, as I always try to adjust to the other team and alter my play accordingly. I'm a big-time chess fan, so I try to think, play, and call in a similar way to how one anticipates his opponents moves in chess.

What makes you unique as a CS player?

I think my chess mentality makes me unique. Then again, maybe I just need to think more because my aim is lacking?! :[

What is something that very few people know about your team but should?

One thing that's always bothered me is that people feel a need to bash on Hero about his LAN versus online performance. Although sometimes he is better online, he's still a top player offline, and easily the best person I've ever played with at a LAN. I guess people like to bash him simply because he talked trash online in the past, which did make me dislike him a lot at one point!

Other than that, we really have a strong family mentality which we try to bring into CS. That's one thing that I think has really helped us play much better this time around with POV.

If you had to pick a team, besides your own, to win GRT #3, which team would it be and why?

X3O. In my opinion, they're currently the best team in the USA as they've been playing extremely well lately (X3O DustOff Champs, strong showing at ESWC, win over mTw was impressive, top CEVO team by far). Also, EG and MoB have made recent roster changes which I think helps put X3O at #1 in the US at the moment.

How do you personally prepare yourself for an event? Do you have any rituals that you perform before matches?

Nothing at all. I usually just try to get some DMing in before any LAN matches or aim_train with my team-mates. Also, I try to get into the right mental state by listening to music and meditating / praying to relax.

Who is your personal hero or role model and why?

My father. He's always been a big part of my life with sports, hunting, schoolwork, etc.
