Counter-Strike: A peek at the GRT 3 Bracket

By: Jeff Suckow - Published September 19, 2008 at 11:48 PM EDT - Writer Archive
With just half a day to go before the start of the third Revival Tour event, GotFrag takes a look at the single elimination bracket.
Welcome to GotFrag's third installment of the Revival Tour. This weekend, we will bring together some of the top teams from throughout North America for an all out showdown. With three rounds of single elimination, there is no safety net until teams reach the semi-finals. Once there, the format will change to double elimination until a winner is chosen.

The map rotation will mimic that of the second Revival Tour event, with Dust2, Nuke, Inferno, and Train being played in that order. The first round of matches start promptly at 1 pm EST. Be sure to tune into GotFragTV's coverage of the event. Fancy a match or team who is not being broadcast? Don't worry, we've got you covered with HLTV and scorebots for all matches. With that in mind, here is a look at each section of the draw.

Please note:

m2w stands for match to watch

First Quarter Draw

Group Favorite: United States Mafia of Brothers
First Round m2w: United States Numberone vs. United States SUPERCR3W
Predicted m2w of the Group: United States Numberone vs. United States Ferocity
Predicted Quarter Final Match-up: United States Mafia of Brothers vs. United States Numberone
Predicted Draw Winner: United States Mafia of Brothers

Kicking off the event is the top quarter of the bracket. This portion of the draw features both MoB and Ferocity, along with some talented up and coming teams. Two great match-ups will start things off. Hyeng's money crew will take on the west coast rockers, and newly formed Numberone will face off against SUPERCR3W, a west coast pug.

Both hmc and wcR have the same 7-8 record in CEVO-main. This will be a rematch from week one, where wcR took Nuke 16-12. SUPERCR3W has a pretty solid lineup, featuring names like eng, SuperBug, and jaded. They will be playing the newly formed Numberone, which also has tons of talent.

Looking ahead to the second round, we will see another couple of great matches, most likely seeing hmc take on MoB and Numberone take on Ferocity. Not only should the n1 and Ferocity match be the battle to watch for this portion of the bracket, it could even be the most interesting match up of the second round.

Eventually, MoB should have somewhat of a challenge against either Ferocity or Numberone to move on to the double elimination portion. However, with the first three rounds being single elimination, you never know when an upset might happen and blow this whole portion of the draw wide open.

Second Quarter Draw

Group Favorite: United States .50 Caliber Gaming
First Round m2w: United States rSports vs. United States vio
Predicted m2w of the Group: United States rSports vs. United States .50 Caliber Gaming
Predicted Quarter Final Match-up: United States rSports vs. United States Frag Dominant
Predicted Draw Winner: United States Frag Dominant

This group definitely has the most potential for the high seeded team to not advance. 50cal had a pretty big roster shakeup, keeping only two members from the squad who experienced such success at the x3o Championship Finals. Who really knows what that is going to do to them?

Keep that in mind while we look at the other teams in the group. FD recently picked up p0s, who has played with gwhatkey in the past and is a strong addition. If you haven't been keeping your eye on CEVO-main, you might have missed out on rSports. CuZ and crew have been busy tearing things up and holding down the number one spot in the division. Also don't forget about Ruins, who are also in this portion of the draw.

Starting things off are two interesting match-ups between violado and Ruins, and rSports and vio. Violado is a decent CEVO-m team, while Ruins is in the bottom half of the P division. Things could be close for both of those matches.

So that brings us to prediction for this section. The match to watch is really a toss up. Either the probable rSports/50cal match, or my predicted "finals" of FD and rSports. Both should be great to spectate.

Third Quarter Draw

Group Favorite: United States Paragon of Virtue
First Round m2w: United States Team to Beat vs. Canada Sway Gaming
Predicted m2w of the Group: United States Paragon of Virtue vs. United States j1n
Predicted Quarter Final Match-up: United States Paragon of Virtue vs. United States j1n
Predicted Draw Winner: United States Paragon of Virtue

While this section of the draw is bursting with teams who are all around the same level in my eyes, it should still be pretty straight forward for POV to maintain their seed. With three teams coming from CEVO-Pro, this section of the draw is technically the toughest. In addition, several good teams from CEVO-Main can be found here.

The interesting opening round match ups include sway/ttb, and devastation/sf. Sway and ttb faced off in week two on Nuke, with sway coming away with the 16-11 win. This time around on Dust2 probably won't be much different.

Devastation has the worst record of any currently active teams in CEVO-pro. They will be facing the Select Few, a pretty old school team who has a sub .500 record in CEVO-main. This should be another close match, with dev pulling it out in the end.

Ultimately, the match-ups most worth your time will be the predicted final match of single elimination, most likely j1n vs. POV. Recently ironing out their roster, j1n is looking
very vulnerable, losing the last five matches they played in CEVO. POV should have no problem tearing into them.

Fourth Quarter Draw

Group Favorite: United States Evil Geniuses
First Round m2w: United States xquizit vs. Canada motus
Predicted m2w of the Group: United States Mug n Mouse vs. Canada Evil Geniuses
Predicted Quarter Final Match-up: United States Evil Geniuses vs. United States Mug n Mouse
Predicted Draw Winner: United States Evil Geniuses

This brings us to the final quarter of the draw. EG.usa has made a few roster changes in an attempt to stop the bleeding. They have not been having the same results which made them popular in the past. This event, albeit online, is very important for them.

In their way of advancing to double elimination, are a few decent teams. You can never count out Mug N Mouse. For some reason you can never underestimate the Texans. They seem to be the most inactive team, and yet are able to pull out decent showings. There is motus, who is doing pretty well in CEVO-Main, and coming from nowhere is Supreme Excellence. They have some old school names on the squad, and should be pretty interesting to watch. Also, don't forget about EG's Canadian boys.

In the first round, you should catch the xquizit/motus match. While I admittedly don't know much about xquizit, they have been getting tons of attention in the forums and if they live up to the attention, might be able to upset the Canadians.

Coming into the second round, a pretty interesting match up is possible between EG.ca and MNM. Both of these teams have sort of faded from the forefront of NA CS, when about a year ago they were both considered close to the top. Both teams should be looking for redemption, and a chance to keep EG.usa out of the double elimination round.
