Counter-Strike: Got Questions? JMC's zid responds

By: Matt DiVito - Published January 06, 2009 at 7:38 PM EST - Writer Archive
The questions are in, find out the answers!
Note: Some questions have been edited for relevance, clarity and grammar.

Over the weekend, GotFrag offered the community a chance to propose questions to an icon of American Counter-Strike, David "zid" Chin. After the posting period came to a close, we selected a handful to pose to JMC Gaming's resident AWPer.

Read below for an interesting look into the professional and personal life of one of your favorite competitors.

Where did you get the name zid from? - TANGIN

Pretty simple, it started as Zidane from Final Fantasy 9. After pubbing in the same server for such a long time, people began to call me zid for short, and from there it was stuck!

With the transition to Source and back again, do you think the play style of you or your teammates has changed considerably compared to before the switch? - zyrox

Source and 1.6 are two different games when it comes to play styles. When I first switched to Source, I incorporated my 1.6 knowledge into Source while learning many new things, and forming my CS:Source style. Coming back to 1.6, I’m currently in a remembering stage. I have to remember how I used to play because I hadn’t played 1.6 those 2 years I was in CGS; it was just something I chose to do.

So for the most part I’m getting use to the game again and trying to remember how I use to play because I can’t use the CS:Source play style in 1.6. When it’s all said and done I think I’ll be a better player than what I use to be. I would think the rest of my team feels the same way.

Luci

If the CGS went back into business and selected Source as their game, do you believe you and/or all of JMC would switch back? - K-Jack

With that kind of money (compared to what I was making in 1.6), it’s just not an opportunity to pass up. I believe most would switch.

Do you have any pets? - noodledude

I have two Chihuahua’s. One’s breath stinks pretty bad.

I'm pretty sure you were in BPA in high school. So, if you weren't gaming, would you be pursuing some type of IT degree and career? If so, what would you want to do specifically? - nicky
Coco

Yes I was in BPA, and yes I thought a lot about pursuing Microsoft Networking. I don’t know if I really enjoyed it though, and I’ve sort of gone half and half with business. I’m a pre-business student at University of Texas at San Antonio right now, and I’m pretty sure I want to get a degree in Information Systems or Network Infrastructure. I want to play CS as long as I can, it’s what I really enjoy doing.

Do you, yourself, have a favorite player to watch? If so, who? - pabloMandela

I don’t have a favorite player, but when watching top European teams I usually drift towards watching the most favorite player from both teams.

Pancakes or waffles? - foobz

I like both, pancakes.

Were there any initial problems with the team, such as communication or play style clashes? - SnowkiNG

There are no communication problems and there are no play style clashes from what I can tell. Honestly, we haven’t practiced all that much and we were planning on starting up mid Jan… but we decided to start practicing a little bit and try to “pug” our way into CEVO-P.

What kind of car do you drive, if any? - AnthonyG
The Ride

I drive a '08 Infiniti G35 Blue Slate Journey Sedan.

Did you, like most people, play sports and eventually quit but only to fill that competitive void with cs? Even though you are getting paid to play CS, do you actually consider it a sport? - nicky

Haha, basically. I use to play soccer when I was smaller, then football, and ended up just stopping during middle school. Here’s exactly what was on my mind: “I’d rather go home and play Starcraft rather than going to football practice.”

I’ll never know if it was the right decision but I don’t regret it… it would have no doubt made middle school and high school more exciting though. I don’t consider it a sport, I consider it pro gaming.

How do you handle slumps, or periods of time where it seems like nothing hits or goes right? - cScslick

I hate slumps and I’m glad I don’t have many of them. It’s all mental, try your best to stay positive and keep your head straight. When you know you’re in a slump you probably aren’t thinking and using your brain as much as you should be… because you’re too busy thinking you’re in a slump. Get that out of your head ASAP! If you’re still having trouble, try being more of a support player instead of an impact player.

I think source has made some of the old 1.6 pros better. Only becuase they got a huge break from the game they truly loved playing and actually might have the URGE to play it

The comment section of articles is not the place for you to flame the writer or the site. Discuss the content in the article. Your critique of the writer is not needed or relevant. Stay on topic and you wont get nuked.

no one was flaming the writer. all the criticism was directly related to the article: ppl are complaining about the selection of questions (which i completely agree were without substance), which is exactly the whole point of having this article was it not No one is flaming the writer or the site so I'm not sure where that came from.

as this is a community based website i can only hope that the suggestions would be taken to heart and more of the relevant and interesting questions would be chosen, but instead any feedback that wasn't positive was immediately nuked, setting a precedent for what i can only see to be a string of articles asking the player what his favorite color is.

Again, flaming the choices of questions is flaming the writer and site. This not the place for it. Off topic and will be nuked. Whats so hard to understand that rude flaming is not allowed in article comments. If you want to complain, make a forum thread, but I wont guarantee that eman wont nuke it as well. You don't walk into a bar and tell a bartender he sucks... you will find yourself outside quickly.

One more thing, there is a difference between constructive criticism and flaming. #22, your post is a perfect example of constructive criticism. Still somewhat off-topic for an article but not neccessarily nuke offense.

However, this...

"picked all the softball questions and $h!t that no one cares about. congrats on a worthless news piece" and "Is this a joke? Where are the actual questions? Cause all I see here is bunch of crap noone cares about.."

are not good examples of constructive criticism. That is rude, immature flaming and won't be allowed. Maybe that clears things up a bit.

#25 point taken. however i think the two situations are different. for a bartender, if he's an a-hole, or a crappy at making drinks, you protest by taking your business elsewhere. for this website, we can't exactly do that. i realize its free and you all are providing us a service, but i thought the intention was to create a community driven website that VALUES feedback- the exact reason you are posting here right now, or why jesuit/midway would occasionally pop into the forums to post a comment.

however for future reference, if i have a complaint on a certain feature/article, i will make a thread and have it get nuked by eman =D. though it seems so much easier to post criticism of an article in the comments section of the said article...

Thanks for the clarification, Singlecoil.

However; (and I know this is off topic as well, sorry) I also think the questions were poorly selected. I think asking about pets, cars, and breakfast food is a bit silly. These are interesting things to know, I suppose, but I would much rather see more gaming-specific questions. EG "Whats your practice schedule like?" "What roles will the players on your team be filling?" "How does it feel to be with JMC?" "How did signing with and the formation of the current JMC squad come about?"

Regardless, good answers, Zid. And FFVII > all FF

How about this?

Along with the questions GotFrag selects, we also choose the top 3 that were fragged up in the comments? Would that not satisfy both parties?

I'll suggest this to the author, as it was his idea in the first place to take it upon himself to bring the feature back. If you have other critiques or suggestions feel free to post them. I agree that blind flames without a suggested fix for the problem isn't helpful and really serves little purpose.

When I decided to bring this feature back, I never really intended to have it function as an incredibly serious piece. I was hoping for a solid and light-hearted set of questions that people might find interesting.

Given the feedback, it will be a lot more serious from now on. And Shrews' idea is a good one.

Stay tuned for Friday when the next person to be featured is released.
