American team EG.usa has been invited to replace wNv for the upcoming Global Finals. wNv-Gaming was recently reported to have had one of their players denied access to Germany, where the EM Global Finals will be taking place between March 3 and March 8. Liu "Savage" Bin was denied entry into the country for a second time, after the same result occurred in November 2008, prior to WCG. Given the circumstances, wNv-Gaming pulled out of the Global Finals set to take place in March; while Bin and fellow teammate Yi "zy" Zhou also decided to leave wNv-Gaming. In their place, ESL has selected EG.usa because "Team EG was highest-ranked team on the waiting list that was able to come to CeBIT." Executive Director of EG, Alex Garfield, expressed that his team is set for the upcoming competition on ESL's website, saying "we're ready to play, we're grateful for the opportunity, and we plan to make the most of it." "Since the inception of our new lineup, the team has been practicing tirelessly - and as of late, especially, the players have really been looking forward to the year's LAN events. So this was a pleasant surprise for us, to say the least," he concluded. This marks the first somewhat major LAN event for Counter-Strike teams in 2009, and one where EG.usa joins two fellow North American teams, x3o Gaming and Gravitas Gaming. The seven European teams to join those already participating in the Global Finals will be decided at CeBIT in the European Continental Finals.
