Counter-Strike: Got Questions? goodfornothing has the answers

Got Questions? is back with Ediz "goodfornothing" Basol of Gravitas Gaming.

Ediz "goodfornothing" Basol chimes in and answers the community's questions in this edition of Got Questions?

What does your alias "goodfornothing" mean? And why do you use that name?

Well back when I first started playing this game in 8th grade, years and years ago, I was in a punk band named "Good For Nothing." I figured that if I fragged enough in those de_dust pubs I might get our band some recognition!

If I had known that I'd be playing this game for this many years and would be hearing the joke "you really ARE good for nothing" this many times I might have considered a different name. =p

Did the mustache enhance or diminish your CS playing ability in any specific way? How significant was the rise in lady attention as a result of the increased sexual magnetism?

A mustache is an experience that I recommend for all guys at one point in their lives. I don't really think it had any effect in my cs playing ability, except for maybe being a distraction to my opponents at LANs where we sat across from each other.

The mustache does bring attention from the ladies, but surprisingly it brings more attention from other guys as evidenced by this question and the numerous GotFrag posts.

If there's one thing you could improve about yourself in-game or not, what would it be?

Hmmmm good question. I suppose I've always felt like I have room for improvement which I view as a good thing. I definitely have confidence in my game but I have always felt like anyone can still improve. I think the one thing I need to work on is patience in game. Waiting for help from teammates rather than trying to be the hero. Although it's cool to go out there and try to get those "sick frags" I think all players should learn that the game is a lot more fun if you're playing everything together as a team.

What team that you've been on did you most enjoy and why?

I've really never been on a team that I haven't enjoyed to be honest. I still keep in touch with most of the people on my first CAL-o and CAL-im teams. As far as which I most enjoyed, the previous lineup with Mehler and Patyojon is the first team that we really got to travel the world with which is an amazing experience. Hopefully our new lineup will be my favorite though with some international victories.

What do your loved ones think about you playing games?

Back when I first started to play a lot in high school they were definitely against it. However, as long as I never let it get in the way of my schooling they slowly started to accept it and now they think it's amazing that I get to travel and compete with it. Once you actually start making some money playing, people realize that it's a very serious game for us.

Why does impulsive remind me of a 12 year old asian chick?

Not sure but it makes me curious about the type of girls you date.

What are your hobbies outside of CS?

Well I graduated from college not so long ago and at the moment I'm between jobs which gives me a lot of spare time for hobbies. In the mornings I try to get some golf in and at night I'm usually out at the bars with my friends. I'm also in a band that I'm really passionate about, we have a CD coming out in a month or so. We play a lot of shows locally you should check us out here. We're kind of a folky band.

Do you have any pets?

No pets, but I definitely plan to own both cats and dogs later in life.

If you weren't still making money from CS, would you still be playing?

I might still be playing in a team of just friends, but definitely not as seriously as I am now. I'd probably just play a couple hours a week for fun but I wouldn't be able to justify playing 5 days a week like I do now.

Who is the most interesting player you have played with/against and why?

There are definitely a lot of interesting characters on the east coast, I dunno what they put in the milk over there. Most interesting player I've played against is probably Naz (Steno), just cause of how he has his teams play the game is pretty unique. It's always nice to see someone with a fresh outlook on the game.

Most interesting player I've played with, the legendary Superbug. First off, his name is Superbug and I once heard him scream "WHITE POWER" when he was on my team and we were beating a team of all Asians at a local qualifier. Despite being hilarious in those ways he definitely taught me a lot.

How do you go about making the strats/setups for your team and how important is your teams input into them?

I've always been a big believer in making strats and CT setups based on everyone's individual strengths. That's why I really like to have a lot of team input on those things. If someone is really good at coming down ladder with an awp on train, I want to know that and incorporate that into the strats.

That is kinda how I go about making T strats too. For a while I'll just have the team kind of "pug it" and just communicate a lot and work together. From there I'll grab little bits that work and try to put it into a more defined framework as a strat. Same with CT sides, have people decide for themselves where they are comfortable playing and then I'll fill in the gaps.

How well do you think American teams will do against the top Euro teams now?

There is definitely going to be an improvement. We've been getting a lot of great practice in against the new teams, and with 4 matches a week now with the introduction of the ESEA league, teams here are improving quickly. I think the upcoming EM Global Finals in Hannover, Germany are gonna be a good test of that.

What do you think is missing for eSports to reach the next level, and to get respect from the general community?

I think gamers, but casual and competitive, will always exist. The difference between the current state of things and any improvements will be the organizations. With more legitimate organizations that exist out there, more teams and players will be able to show the general community that eSports is real.

Also, these organizations are the ones who go out there and brings sponsors that might have been unaware of this industry into the eSports world. Although with the economy like it is now, it seems like eSports has taken a step backwards.

Who's better, DAFF or hahN?

It's hard to compare these two players really. I've always seen hahN as a player with great movement and aim and movement who can pull some amazing ninja moments off. Daffsta is more of a strat caller type of player who analyzes the game.

We see a lot of threads about the 'best' game server but from a pro's perspective, is the game server really something that should or shouldn't be overlooked?

The server company you choose and which servers you are playing on are incredibly important. Since our internet here is nothing like over in Europe where they play against each other with 5 ping between different countries, we need really good servers.

It's hard enough as it is to play with 50-60 ping, and if you're server isn't top notch it can be really frustrating since CS is a game based on incredible precision.

A lot of the top teams these days have been using Electrify Servers including us (and I know it seems like a plug but they really are good!).

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Unfortunately I feel like at some point I'm going to have to put my college degree to use and get an actual job. I do feel like gaming will always be part of my life though, and hopefully at some point in the future if I do well, I can give back to the community. Maybe I'll host a Counter-Strike 4.0 tournament 20 years down the line.

Any shoutouts?

Shoutout to anyone who's ever supported me or been a fan!
