Counter-Strike: ESWC Masters Group Preview

By: Rob Maher - Published May 03, 2009 at 8:21 AM EDT - Writer Archive
GotFrag takes a look at the drawn groups for the 2009 ESWC Masters from Cheonan Korea.

GotFrag.com - The ESWC Masters of Cheonan marks what might be the last ESWC event ever held, considering the recent bankruptcy claim by their parent organization.

This tournament is independently funded however, and consists of the top teams from around the world.

The sixteen teams have been divided into four groups, with the top two teams advancing from each. From there, teams will battle it out in a best-of-three single elimination bracket to determine the final victor.

Be sure to check out GotFrag's scores and schedule for the 2009 ESWC Asia Masters.

Group A

South Korea Korean Team - TBD, TBD, TBD, TBD, TBD
South Korea WeMadeFox - glow, solo, lsw, bail, termi
China wNv Gaming - KangTa, prom1se, aqi, k1n, virgo
United States Evil Genius - fRoD, lurppis, n0thing, Warden, Storm

Group A is definitely one of the most interesting, being the sole group without a European team. It's also the only group to include an American team. Wemade FOX is the heavy favorite, despite their roster changes that plagued them during the EMIII Global Finals, which they placed 5-6th. Right behind them, EG.usa is predicted to finish second over a wNv team which has no current results to back them up. Regardless, the match between the Chinese and American teams will be the one to watch, as it should determine which side will advance to the quarterfinals.

Prediction: Wemade FOX, EG

Group B

Japan Speeder - nativo , noppo , sion , twist , xenqlity
Germany Mousesports - cyx, gob b, gore, Kapio, Tixo
South Korea Korea Team - TBD, TBD, TBD, TBD, TBD
Norway Alchemists - floreNz, zEn, tacky, kalle, Vertigo

Despite which Korean team qualifies here, it's pretty easy to determine the outcome of this group. Easily the weakest of the four groups, mousesports should come out on top here. Speeder is a known team from Japan which always competes in both the ESWC and WCG tournaments, always to get knocked out in the first round. Second place in this group should go to the unknown Alchemists team from Norway, unless the Korean team throws a wrench into the machine and takes a map from them.

Prediction: Mousesports, Alchemists

Group C

Poland Wicked - NEo , luq , taz , loordB , kuben
Sweden SK-Gaming - allen , RobbaN , zet , tentpole , walle
Australia Team Immunity - deStiny, kraM, gazR, benoR and ferg
Sweden Fnatic - dsn , f0rest , Get_RiGht , Gux , carn

This group can easily be called the group of death. With fnatic, SK, and Wicked (ex-MYM for those that don't know) this group is by far the most difficult to qualify from. Fnatic, with their recent roster switch, is coming off of a hot victory at the EM III Global Finals, and as such are the heavy favorites to advance. Assuming fnatic wins all of their matches, that makes SK vs Wicked the match to watch, as the winner should be the second team to make it to the playoff. However, you can't count out Team Immunity as they've shown that they can compete with top teams and are more than capable of upsetting any one of these three giants.

Prediction: Fnatic, Wicked

Group D

South Korea Korean Team - TBD, TBD, TBD, TBD, TBD
Denmark mTw - zonic , mJe , ave , whimp , sunde
Taiwan UMX - cedrik , evant , realment , rusty , ryuki
Singapore TitaNs - Matrix , StrykerX , techduck , extreme , syck

Group D, much like Group B, is one of the more easier groups to predict. mTw is the heavy, heavy favorite. Anything but first for the Denmark squad would be a disappointment to all of their fans, as well as any other follower of eSports. The other teams will be fighting for second, and the TitaNs of Singapore should have the advantage here. They've competed in just about every WCG/ESWC event as the Singaporean representative, and that experience should be able to carry them over any Korean team that should qualify here, as well as the UMX team from Taiwan.

Prediction: mTw, TitaNs
